Fantastic experience with Mike and Angelo! They were extremely knowledgeable, picked out everything I needed for the project and had it installed in 1 day. I have an older Sugarhouse home and was very impressed with their ability to work on an old home. I had an issue with a ceiling fan that I thought was causing trouble with the new fixtures and they were able to quickly find the problem, then fix it too. I'm very happy with the service and highly recommend them. They will be my go-to electricians from now on!

Darrell installed a drain and hot/cold water lines to my bar sink in the kitchen. Darrell was very transparent and honest when he gave me the bid. It was a very clean and quick plumbing job! I will hire Darrell again in the future!

Joseph did a phenomenal job with finishing our garage. My garage walls look as good, or better, than my interior home walls. We're so glad we had Joseph finish our garage. He finished the plaster work, textured and painted our garage and it looks great! I would highly recommend Joseph. He does top notch work, at a fair price. Thanks! Mike Oaks Herriman, Utah

We hired Rachael to do some design work in our home. She did an amazing job! Once she understood our style, she quickly pulled together several tile/paint/flooring options for us. We loved her ideas and she saved us tons of time. Rachael also helped us choose all main features and accessories. The process was fun and easy and we live the finished room! Would highly recommend!

I moved to Salt Lake last year and decided to rent an apartment, but i have no experience nor knew how to decorate my apartment, so i've started to look for designers online and found George. I gave him a call and on the next day he was at my place measuring everything and asking question about my taste. It took us around 15 hours (around 3-4 hours a week) to be done. He helped with everything, from telling you what it would fit, what is too expensive, what is a good deal, going to furniture stores with me... Literally everything. I was very picky and particular about what i liked, but george helped me to find exactly what i needed. My place is looking amazing and I'm very thankful for his work.

When my family first moved into our home 20+ years ago, we did the hard job of tearing down wood panels on the walls in our basement family room, removing dusty window treatments, etc. But we never did anything to make the space truly ours. Natalie helped us figure out how to section off the room so that it is usable for all the many activities we do in that one room. She skillfully guided us through the process of pinpointing our decorating style, making some small remodeling changes, and buying and/or re-purposing furniture. I highly recommend Natalie. She was a joy to work with.

I would highly recommend Meadowbrook Construction to anyone. They were amazing in every stage and aspect of the project. I had them do a major remodel on my kitchen, bathroom, and living area and they performed flawlessly. The craftsmanship was excellent and I could not be happier.

You will be hard pressed to find a better staging experience than the one that Maybird offers. They are very responsive, flexible, and professional. Their designs are great and their customer service is impeccable. They were the game changer for my listing. It had been on the market for a couple of months and wasn't the serious bites that we had anticipated. Maybird staged the home, we got new photos taken, and we were under contract the very next week.

Michelle is extremely talented. She is knowledgeable with regard to placement/spacial orientation & coordination of furniture, floor treatments, window treatments, and accessories. She was very helpful with regard to lighting selections - and encouraged us to get out of our "comfort zone" - which we did, and we are very happy with the lighting selections that she recommended. The furniture she recommended is of the highest quality - and we hope to get many decades of use out of it. The fabric selections were of very high quality - that should last for a long time. She even helped us to coordinate treatment of all furniture fabrics and rugs. She assisted us with paint selection, and wall decoration ideas. Overall - our new home construction project with Michelle was a very rewarding experience for us - and we could not be happier with the outcome. We regularly receive very positive comments about her work. I highly recommend her to you. James Palazzo, Dallas Texas Area.

We asked Amy to help with our new home design. We asked for help beacause we were so overwhelmed by the choices. We didn’t know how to take the ideas we had and tie them all together and have it look decent. Amy met with us and we instantly felt better. She is patient, oraganized and flexible. She helped us take our ideas and make it a reality. I would absolutely recommend her!

Adrienne is the rare competent designer who is willing to go beyond the call of duty, and someone who is genuinely nice and accommodating. She did a lot of work for us for a 102 unit building that we built in Provo/Springville. Good color and furniture choices, excellent suggestions, and smart money savings. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED !!

We had Collin and his team work on our house last year to get it ready to sell. He did a lot of different odd jobs for us from painting, to tile, to rain gutters. I always felt like I was getting quality work done for very good price, and I appreciated the pace that the work was done. Its hard to fine good contractors that you can trust, and I definitely would recommend CJ as one of those people. In fact, I'm having him come back to my new home and help finish my basement. Great workmanship and a great value. Thanks!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

        What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

        • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
        • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
        • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
        • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

        • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
        • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
        • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
        • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
