Utah Flooring did a great job on my pretty extensive remodel. It's complicated working with multiple subcontractors for tile, laminate, carpet, demo etc, and sometimes the subs aren't as reliable as needed, but the guys in charge at Utah Flooring made sure I was happy with the job, communicated well with me, were adaptable when needed, made sure the work was done right, and finished everything on schedule! 5 stars for Utah Flooring!

Wow! I was about to delete this app because lately I've had bad experiences from contractors on Thumbtack. Darrell turned that around; what a great, honest, hard working guy. I would definitely recommend to everyone. He is very knowledgeable and is quick to find solutions. He quickly found the problem and solution to my low water pressure in my sprinkler system. Great guy! Thank you, Darrell!

The first thing they did is tear out everything in the old bathroom and repaired the ceiling and anything else that needed fixing. After that was done I had a shower plumbed into the wall. Once that was done, they put tile from the tub to the ceiling. I wanted 3 shelves integrated into the tile and they were able to do that and make it look absolutely wonderful. After that was completed, they started on the floor. One of the things I really like about the tile on the floor, is they didn't do end pieces at the doorway so that it has a better look to it. I also requested that the tile be installed 3 feet up the wall for a way to protect the walls from splashing. This was all accomplished in about a two week period which was great. I absolutely love the look of my new bathroom and I get a lot of compliments on it. I have recommended them to several people. They even went as far as helping me pick out the tile and suggested some ways they could add some design to it. They were great

I have a garage that needed to be prepared for painting. He added mud to the existing sheetrock and sanded. He also hanged 4 lights in the garage. His price was higher than another quote I received but he was able to start right away. They did a good job and I would recommend him.

Elias just finished installing tile in our bathroom last week; he did a marvelous job! Not only does he do precise, quality work, but he treated my small job as an important project. He worked to fit me in and finished the job on time. He communicates well and always showed up when he said he would. We are very pleased and would highly recommend Elias for projects large and small.

Jack Rich did a remodel for my mother's condo in 2004. He designed and installed the cabinets and granite in the kitchen, bathroom and mantel for the fireplace. His work was outstanding! His crew was efficient and reliable. He was very responsive as to any questions we had throughout the whole process. He is extremely skilled as a carpenter, designer and contractor. He can complete virtually any home design project in a timely and high quality fashion. I highly recommend Rocksteady Stone & Woodcraft! R. Tatar San Francisco Bay Area

Alfie installed two walls of mosaic tile in our small bathroom, and finished it off by hanging our mirror, light, and towel bar, and installing our sink faucet. Alfie and his team were professional and courteous throughout the project, letting me know exactly what was going on at each step. The work was completed in two days, as promised. Some additional materials were needed, and Alfie kept all of the receipts for my records. The final price was where I expected it to come in -- no surprises! I highly recommend Alfie for your tile projects.

Levi is the not only the BEST tile contractor I have EVER used, he is the BEST contractor I have ever had in the home. He is prompt, professional, dedicated to excellence and delivers MORE than he promises. This kind of contractor is hard to find in this day and age. We will never work with another tile contractor. We have already planned more projects for him to do. We HIGHLY recommend him. Don't waste your time with overpriced, under delivering contractors who take advantage of home owners. Levi is honest, hard working, skilled and dedicated.

I've been very impressed with Efrain. He's very knowledgeable in nearly every area of construction and he works hard. I would recommend him over any general contractor as his quality and price are outstanding. He's doing a much better job than other other construction jobs we've had. He does electrical, plumbing, HVAC, drywall, carpet, and many other areas of home renovation and new construction. As a small business owner myself I am very pleased with the overall quality and experience in working with Efrain. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HIM!

We had Collin and his team work on our house last year to get it ready to sell. He did a lot of different odd jobs for us from painting, to tile, to rain gutters. I always felt like I was getting quality work done for very good price, and I appreciated the pace that the work was done. Its hard to fine good contractors that you can trust, and I definitely would recommend CJ as one of those people. In fact, I'm having him come back to my new home and help finish my basement. Great workmanship and a great value. Thanks!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

    • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
      • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
    • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
    • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install tile?

Tile installation costs vary widely depending on the tiles you choose, where you want them installed, and what kind of demolition and surface preparation you need to have done. The national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The more tiles that need to be cut by hand and laid on the surface, the higher the total cost. Tile installation professionals can handle many different types of stone, ceramic and porcelain tiles, applying them in kitchens, bathrooms, hallways and entranceways. They can create anything from artistic mosaic backsplashes in your kitchen to modern shower enclosures to rustic patios in your backyard. Tile installation professions often can remove existing flooring or old tiles and replace drywall. Tile prices range from $1 to more than $50 per square foot — handmade ones are even priced individually — depending on the material. Rustic, handmade or special-use tiles cost more to install because they must be applied to the surface one by one, rather than in a sheet. For most jobs, tile installation costs are based on the square footage of the project. For example, a standard 6-foot by 8-foot shower tile installation can average $1,200-$1,600, depending on whether the tiles go to the top of the shower or to the ceiling. The total cost of a tiling project also includes the grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps, and tile mounting materials like backer board.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
