How do you possibly describe your time with Phil in a tiny box? I could do it in a word or two, but I really feel that he deserves more than that for the way that he helped me! Not only physically (he really kicked my butt... HARD!) but he also helped me out mentally and emotionally. He helped me realize how much control I really had over my thoughts and then helped remove the proverbial stick I was using to beat myself for stupid things I had done or wasn't achieving at that moment. His company The Personal Best Club was a God-sent gift to me! I got my parents involved because honestly he cares not only about what he does, but about you and what you do and how you feel. Even after you aren't working directly with him anymore. I still share successes with him, because he was always there to really help me celebrate and helped me realize it is OKAY to pat yourself on the back and when I failed he helped me to see it as a lesson, not an end. He helped me immensely on my path to my personal best and became one of my truest friends along the way. 5 stars hardly covers the rating I would really give him.

My local school had me take a Myers and Briggs survey/test. And though it was nice to know many aspects to my personality, my school took the information, and assumed that I was destined for a profession from off a list that “fit” my current skills. They began telling me what classes I needed to take, so that I would be ready for which of those “jobs” I took. They were not viewing all of the options, but were trying to fit me into a pre-determined box. My Mom suggested that I consult with some friends of the family that had more of the results I wanted. They taught me some very important information. They recommended some CDs to me and some books that would help me in my struggle. I can’t thank them enough. I now understand the principle “begin with the end in mind” or “pick the destination, not the road”. I may be young, but I have so much more of a head start than my peers. I am now well on my way down the road that leads to my desires and passion, and financial security.

Brian is an amazing leader and helps me increase my vision. He taught me that in order to be successful I need to first have a strong vision to run towards. He not only talks the talk, but he walks the walk as well. Seeing Brian at home with his family, I can tell that he truly lives the principles he teaches in private, and not just gives good lip service like a lot of people do. I recommend him to anyone looking to improve the results in their life!

I have had the opportunity to meet with Mark for several months for life coaching lessons and work with him for a couple years now. Over these past months he has been able to help me better understand myself so that I am able to thrive and accomplish the things I have a desire for. I was able to learn things about myself that I did not know before. He also helped me learn different ways to handle the obstacle's life throws at us. I have learned so many problem solving skills from Mark that I will keep with me for the rest of my life. He is truly an exceptional person and gave me advice with my best interest in mind.

I engaged with Dale on short notice, to run a leadership development session with a young team of assistant managers who were visiting Salt Lake City from the Philippines. He was extremely responsive and put together a great 2-hour workshop with less than 2 business days of prep. His activities and content were appropriate for my group, and his approach was very empathetic and professional.

Recently Miranda did a drawing for me. She did a great job in all aspects of the piece. Every shadow, line work and high lights were done perfect. The drawing she did took her a couple of days and I was very impressed someone good do such an amazing job in such little time. I have nothing but good things to say about her artistic capabilities. I look forward to someday having another opportunity to work with her again.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a career coach?

If you’re interested in furthering your career and want expert help, a career coach is a smart solution. A career coach is a professional you hire to guide you during a job search or a career transition, or to help you improve and advance in your current position. A career coach analyzes your work situation and learns what your professional goals are. They then create a strategy to help you achieve your targets. Throughout the process they should provide objective feedback and guide you in approaching the process strategically. Here are some of the tools and tasks a career coach may assist you with:

  • Helping you build a strong resume that reflects your work history, potential, and skills
  • Coaching for interviews and strategies for solid answers built around your resume and the target job
  • Defining your career goals
  • Creating a plan for job searching
  • Improving networking strategies and skills
  • Developing strategies for negotiating raises or promotions
  • Assessing why you’re not getting where you want to go
  • Identifying new positions or career opportunities that fit your skills

Why is career counseling important?

Career counseling can help you discover your career path, help you overcome challenges preventing you from finding happiness in your job, or help you learn more about career opportunities that are available to you. Career counselors are typically counselors who specialize in helping guide people into their best career choices. As professionals, they have typically completed a master’s degree in counseling with a focus on career counseling and bring a nuanced understanding of the emotional blocks that prevent someone from doing what they love or getting ahead in their current position. Here are some of the ways that career counseling can help:

  • Identify your skills and talents and how they correlate to different career paths
  • Educate you about the educational requirements for launching in various careers and what earnings can look like
  • Help you understand the kind of environment you want to work in, and which careers are best suited for that
  • See opportunities to transfer your existing skill set to other career areas
  • Help you identify causes of tension or unhappiness in your current career and how to overcome those difficulties
  • Help you create a game plan for moving forward
  • Provide a safe space for you to understand your feelings about career choices you’re making

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

A career coach provides one-on-one sessions to help you reach your career goals or overcome any challenges you’re having in your career path. The cost to have career coaching can vary based on factors such as the number of sessions you purchase at one time and the experience and rates of your counselor. Career counselors are typically professionals who have earned at least a master’s degree in their field. Based on their academic background, supplemental certifications they have received, and any postdoctoral work they have done, their rates may vary. Typically career counselors offer reduced rates when you sign on for their services on an ongoing basis. A typical price range for career counseling services (nationally) could be $75-$150 per session. Remember to always ask if the career counselor offers a complimentary introductory session. You want to make sure the relationship will be the right personality and counseling style fit to help launch your confidence and upcoming career changes.

How much does it cost to hire a career coach?

When it’s time to take your career to the next level, it’s time to hire a career coach. The cost to have a career coach help you with your professional journey will vary based on how many sessions you require, the level of coaching you desire, and the rates of the coach as determined by their experience, expertise, education and training. On average, career coaching sessions can range from 60 to 120 minutes, depending on the professional and what your needs are. Career coaches in smaller towns and areas with a lower cost of living will also typically have lower rates than those residing in large metro areas like New York, although most do offer remote coaching. Many coaches also offer a free introductory consultation, which gives you the opportunity to determine if their personality and coaching style are the right fit. It’s helpful to ask the coach about their relevant experience and get references from former clients. Depending on the professional, session rates could range anywhere from under $60 to well over $250 per session. Package discounts are a good way to commit to the relationship as well as get savings on services.

What is a career counselor?

If you’re feeling lost in your career path, overwhelmed, in need of a job but confused as where to start, or ready for change but uncertain what you want, a career counselor is a good choice for you. A career counselor is typically a licensed professional who has earned a master’s degree in counseling — likely with an emphasis on career counseling. Each state has different licensing requirements for career counselors, so be sure to research before reaching out to a pro.

Due to their academic backgrounds, career counselors often have a more holistic and in-depth approach than a career coach. Career coaches are not regulated by states and also tend to be more business-focused — a good fit for those who know what they want but need help achieving it. On the other hand, a career counselor provides guidance and clarity around some of the more emotional aspects that job hunting and career movement entail. Career counselors meet with you in a series of one-on-one sessions. They assess your personality and learn what drives you. They get a detailed understanding of your work history and your hopes, and often work to help you discover any internal blocks preventing you from going where you want to go. Hiring a career counselor is appropriate at any time in your career, from recent graduate to executive-level management.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
