Emily Merrell is a fantastic teacher! During my lessons, I learned so much about many different aspects of music: music theory, jazz theory, vocal technique, and composition. I also had the opportunity to be in Emily Merrell's a cappella group, which was a great experience. Emily takes the time to get to know each of her students and their individual needs. She also plans vocal showcases with live bands and other fun performances. Emily is very knowledgable in many different aspects of music, and I learned so much from her (especially about jazz piano & jazz theory) in such a short time. I'm grateful to have been able to work with her.

We hired John as a solo guitarist to play at an outdoor client reception we hosted, and he was the perfect choice. He was easy to work with, professional, and very talented. I would hire him again.

It was a 50th birthday party his group showed up and pretended to be part of the guests. No one knew except the host it was a great surprise for the party and the birthday girl. The crowd loved him and kept requesting songs. He was very gracious and responded to all requests. His enthusiasm professionalism promptness and desire to do a job above and beyond is amazing. I would hire him for any and all engagements where you would like to have that kind of spirit added to your function. Thanks again for a great memory.

I have hired Stephen Hughes in three different capacities. I hired him to teach my drum line for marching band season, and then hired him to teach private lessons to a group of students. I have also hired to him to perform with a professional wind orchestra as a percussionist. He is an outstanding educator with a very thorough understanding of how to communicate with students, how to work with colleagues, and how to develop and implement a plan. His pedagogy is sound, and his results are thorough. As a performer, he is very trustworthy on all different elements of the percussion section. His rehearsal demeanor is impeccable, and his preparation skills are thorough. He can be trusted implicitly as a performer and educator.

I saw CryWolf perform at an annual private event a while back and ended up hiring them for my own party. When our guests saw them setting up with acoustic guitars they thought we were in for some easy listening. Of course I knew better because I had seen them before, and all I can tell you is they rocked the place. Everyone absolutely loved their song selections. They don't play the same over-played, old, and worn out songs that other full rock bands cover. They weren’t too loud and they weren’t too soft, but they do make a lot of noise for 3 guys. The lead singer has an excellent voice and the guitar players are very, very good together, with excellent harmonies. They might not be the cheapest band around, but they're worth every penny. They even played longer than the time we agreed upon. Its easy to see they enjoy what they do. They are professional and are very easy to work with. Its hard to say that their version of Hotel California is better than the original, but…and their covers of the Chili Peppers were our favorites! They cover Collective Soul, Incubus, and America very well. They did everything very well. I wouldn’t hesitate to hire them as they have become our favorite band to play at our annual event. You won’t be disappointed!

Max played his debut gig at my wedding and blew it out of the water. He matched my mellow, acoustic music style perfectly and blended it seamlessly into a cozy winter wedding. Both his playing and his singing are clean, professional, and not overbearing in a room. He practiced like a madman, took care of everything from start to finish so I had no worries and so kindly offered to help with wedding prep, whether it was musical or not! His live music made the night.

The "MixedNuts" were a big hit with my guests and me!They played the perfect music for my 90th Birthday. My Nephew who is a sound engineer and travels all over the Southwest with big name bands- thought they were very good and so danceable. A friend that plays bass vile with a locale jazz band though they were very good also. The best part is that so many people got up and danced. Another friend wants them for her 50th Anniversary. I am most grateful to "The Mixed Nuts"for helping to making my party a big success!

      About

As both a band leader and DJ I am able to provide musical entertainment for all aspects of an event from start to finish. For some events, I DJ and play the saxophone. Other events I bring my band and also DJ. Gold Standard is comprised of three seasoned jazz musicians: Conn Curran (vocals) Bart Olson (drums) and Rob Bennion (DJ/Sax/Flute) with an affinity for vintage jazz style and electronic exploration. They are known for taking current popular hits and turning them into golden crooner renditions- combining serious DJ grooves with impressive acoustic chops. Their music spans from the classic sounds of Frank Sinatra, to a dance-infused electronic version of John Legend. They can turn a concert or event into a speakeasy or a dance club, or both.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

      • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
      • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
      • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
