We booked Veronica's for our wedding and I do not regret it at all. We talked through Thumbtack a few times deciding on a budget and a type of menu we were interested in, Veronica was very patient and knowledgeable giving us some suggestions, and she is extremely budget friendly. Before she contacted us we were already thinking of not having dinner at the wedding because all the prices we were quoted elsewhere seemed too far out of our budget. We had our first (and final, no more was needed) tasting session with them and OMG the food was so amazing we immediately knew we wanted to use their services for our wedding. The caterers were extremely professional, and I could tell they knew what they were doing. We didn't have to worry about anything, and we were really confident they had our backs. Would definitely recommend them again!

801 Catering did our wedding luncheon and I would definetly recommend them for any event! They served buffet street tacos with freshly made tortilla chips and salsa. It's was authentic and delicious! Everyone loved it. 3 full tables of meat and toppings. They were set up and ready to go when we showed up. Chef Alex and his staff were very friendly and professional.

We had Chef Mike cook our family Thanksgiving dinner, (22 people) It turned out AMAZING! The most moist/delicious turkey I have ever had and delicious prime rib as well! He did all of the shopping, cooking and delivered it right to our home. We have some family members with food allergies and he worked very well with me to make sure all of my concerns were addressed and taken care of. I highly recommend his services, he is a good chef, very kind and most of all great food! We will use him again, and no more cooking Thanksgiving dinner for me:) Thanks again, Mike!

Jenna was so incredibly easy to work with! She took all of the stress away from planning food for our wedding, she responded quickly, had professional staff with her who were all dressed appropriately, adapted to the resources we had available, showed up early to start preparing food, had everything ready on time and was a highlight for our day. Not to mention, the food was AMAZING!!!! We had so many compliments and people asking for her information, because the food was so delicious! I have seen Jenna prepare food for smaller groups and also groups the size for our wedding (100 for dinner and 400+ for the reception) and every time it has been delicious! I would recommend Jenna 10/10 times and know you will not be disappointed with her cooking!

We hired Rex and Cathy to provide a dinner for our wedding, and they were absolutely fantastic! We aren't from Salt Lake originally, but wanted to get married here. Unfortunately, this meant we didn't have a whole lot of help from family when it came to planning. Rex and Cathy were really the first cog for the event we found, and everything started to come together after we booked them. They were a real delight to work with: exceptionally polite, flexible, fun, and punctual. Because of them, we started to believe that we could actually pull off planning a wedding. They even invited us over to their house to try the food, which was exceptional. Our wedding was outside, and on the big day, it dumped rain. Rex and his team showed up with a pop up tent though, and had plenty of manpower to get the job done. They fed 120 people with no problems, and even specially prepared vegetable lasagna for our vegetarian guests! All of our guests also enjoyed watching the preparation of the meal and the Dutch Oven cooking, it was extra entertainment! After the dinner, we received several compliments on the food, and many of our guests went back for seconds and thirds. For us it was much more intimate than having a caterer show up with pre-made food in chaffing dishes. If you’re looking to host an event, you can’t go wrong with Carroll’s Custom Cooking, these guys are the best! The food was absolutely delicious, but more importantly, they took a lot of stress off of our backs knowing that our guests would be happy.

Great catering service for a major fundraising event, with close to 300 guests. Chalia was great to work with. She remained calm at all times, and our guests loved the food that she and Juan made. She offered a very nice tasting opportunity in advance while we were choosing caterers, and we were sold! Would happily use The Brulee Catering again.

Wrap and Roll catered my daughters brunch for her December wedding at the Garden Center in Heritage Park. Not only were they extremely professional and well prepared, but the food was fantastic! Friends and family that ask how my newlyweds are doing still comment about how incredibly delicious the food was. Wayne and his staff were courteous, professional, and hard working, which alleviated my stress and allowed me to focus on my daughter, instead of the details of the wedding. I highly recommend Wrap and Roll, and plan on using them for all my future catering needs.

I met the owner Paul at the Salt Lake city airport before my flight back to Dallas. We talked for a little before he let me know he owned a dessert catering company. He gave me a couple samples before I boarded my flight. I had the salted caramel cookie and peruvian chocolate brownie. I have to say, hands down the best brownie I've ever had. I just wished I had milk on the flight. Definitely will be calling him the next time I'm in Salt Lake City.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to hire a caterer?

Catering prices depend mainly on how fancy you want the food and service to be and how many guests you’ll have. When you’re first looking to hire a caterer for your event, consider how many guests you’ll have and your total food and drink budget. The national average for event catering is $340, but catering prices can range into the thousands depending on your menu, guest count, and service.

Event catering is a broad term that covers everything from fully prepared, ready-to-eat food that the hosts plate and serve themselves to full-service, multicourse meals, including rental of linens, glassware and other items, with service staff organized by the catering company. Usually a caterer will determine cost based on the type of event you’re having, how many guests will attend, the level of service you desire, and what type of menu you’d like to have. For example, if you have a set catering budget, say $1,500, and you plan to have 50 people attend, that means you have $30 per person for food. If you have the same budget with 100 people, you have $15 per person for food. In this way, the number of people you want to attend your event and the level of food you want to serve them determines how much catering will cost.

How much should catering cost per person?

Catering prices can range from about $10 per guest on the low end to $150 or more per person on the high end. Catering costs represent the quality of food, presentation, variety, ingredients and service. But catering prices are more than the cost to cook the food that will be at your party; they also include the cost for the company to do business. Here is a simple breakdown of catering prices:

    • Menu: The food you serve your guests will directly affect the price per person. Organic ingredients, complex recipes, elaborate presentations, or high-ticket items like lobster or filet mignon all add to the cost.
    • Service: Buffet, family style, plated dinners — how you serve the food affects the cost per person. For example, a true plated meal can cost about twice the price of a staff-assisted buffet because of staffing costs. Hiring waiters, bartenders and cleanup crew will all be calculated into the per-person catering price.
    • Drinks: Providing beverages and alcoholic drinks for guests greatly increases your catering budget. Hosting an open bar can cost as much per person as the meal.
    • Rentals: Seating, plates, glassware, etc., will all have an effect on the cost per person for catering. For example, a plastic conference table that seats 10 costs about $6 to rent on average, while a wooden farmhouse table is about $80 to rent on average.
    • Business costs: Any catering cost will also include the cost for the company to do business such as insurance, employee wages, commercial kitchen space and more.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
