Introduction: I perform stand-up comedy, I also officiate weddings. My style is to merge both, and draft a contemporary-language wedding script to lighten the tone of an otherwise rigid ceremony. I offer a no obligation, cost-free, consultation to determine which elements you want to include in your ceremony. I have an As You Like It approach to wedding ceremonies; it is your day, let’s discuss your expectations for your 10 to 20 minutes of splendor. I will compose a script, and we can sharpen it until it meets your expectations. I provide you with a final draft of the script so you know exactly what you and your guests will hear. No surprises. Well, perhaps a few, but I promise they will be humorous and awesome. As a wedding officiant, I assist happy couples to create a unique, modern language, and non-religious, or non-denominational, ceremony. Or, perhaps they do want a religious ceremony, but are not active members of any specific church, and therefore have no familiar clergy upon whom to call. The couple may be interfaith, intercultural, or spiritually atypical. These situations should not be barriers to a memorable event. I am often asked, "but you're a stand-up comedian? And you officiate weddings? Aren't those mutually exclusive?" Actually, they are quite analogous. Comedians and officiants stand before guests whom not only have put forth the effort to attend, but also enjoy what awaits them. We want every seat occupied and undivided attention towards center stage. Our goal is to relate to every attendee by speaking of shared experiences. We hope everyone leaves feeling better than when they arrived. I have learned officiating wedding ceremonies is not about being ecclesiastical; rather, it is involves creative writing, leadership, and public speaking. Creative writing allows me to compose a script which is both contemporary and representative of the couple. Plenty of tedious, mundane marriage vows, with beastly grammar, exist online. However, the thought of a “show up & throw up” monologue makes me cringe. Leadership is important because it encourages me to be organized and manage the client-vendor relationship. Couples may not know what ceremony elements are available to them; suggesting options empowers them to broaden their scope. Leadership also includes standing with the bride, groom, and attendants, prompting them to speak and participate during the ceremony. Speaking of speaking, doing so publicly tolerates zero timidity. The bride and groom may be the stars of the show, but I will own the stage; my task is to lead them through their ceremony and make them look and sound their best. The opening and greeting must flow freely without being read. The Charge of the Couple may involve the verbal acrobatics of storytelling. Reciting the ring exchange requires cadence. The presentation must be assertive, audible, and comprehensible; no one wants to endure passive, incoherent mumbling. We would most likely need to meet three times. The first will be a consultation to discuss your expectations. The second will be at the rehearsal, and the third will be the ceremony. Assisting with vows and reviewing scripts we can do via e-mail. A few comments regarding wedding license logistics. I need access to the license within minutes of pronouncing you husband and wife. I can complete any blanks, as required, while you are collecting hugs from family and guests. During a lull, I’ll approach and capture your signatures and the signatures of your two witnesses. I will sign as well. You are certainly welcome to use the signing as a photo opportunity. If your marriage license was issued in Salt Lake County, I will hand deliver it to the County Clerk’s Office; otherwise, I will remit it via registered mail. I set my flat rate fee is based on the amount of time I anticipate will be required of me to generate a script, communicate with you, participate in your rehearsal, and conduct your ceremony. Travel, postage, and a pressed shirt as included. While meeting a client at Starbucks, I noticed a spot at the counter where you can pick up a beverage you ordered via your smart phone. That sounded horrific; as if the drive-thru was not anonymous enough to avoid human contact. Officiating a wedding is very "off the grid" so to speak. I meet with people do discuss their expectations. I communicate with those people by name. I meet their families. I meet their guests. I see them laugh and cry. I see joy on their faces. The energy in the room is a pleasant departure from our on-line lives. Being a wedding officiant forces me to learn new skills, as well as resharpen skills I allowed to soften. It forces me to step outside of my comfort zone, build relationships, enjoy a fuller life.

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

    Presently, I quote a flat rate fee based on the amount of time I believe the client will require. For example, meeting with a client three times, a county away, consumes more effort than a meet once situation, in town, for a five minute ceremony. If travel is significant, or lodging is required, I will flat rate that expense, also. Exiting following a small ceremony is brisk, and requires less time. I approach the bride, groom, and witnesses more rapidly, collect signatures, wish them well, and take my leave. Larger groups need to pause for hugs and photographs. The bride & groom may be catering their own event and need time to setup for receptions, finish cooking, and serve their guests.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

    I invite potential clients to meet at a coffee shop; some place neutral, safe, & comfortable. I describe my approach and the product I have to offer. Next, I ask the clients to discuss how they envision their ideal ceremony. I lead the meeting, in a coaching sort of way, and advise the couple they have many options to make their ceremony unique. I review the core elements of a wedding ceremony and discuss scripting options. I set expectations, describe our communication timeline, and review our discussion with a follow-up e-mail. Listen. Listen. Listen. Sometimes, a reverent moment can be gleaned from a quick comment. I learn about my clients and their preferences by listening. Listening builds the bond to provide the most meaningful service.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

    I have learned officiating wedding ceremonies is not about being ecclesiastical; rather, it involves creative writing, leadership, and public speaking. I practice all three throughout every week. I have also studied the cultural significant of marriage and familiarized myself local marriage laws. If guests cry at weddings because they get emotional, just image how the families and the bride & groom must feel. After all of the effort and against, the bride & groom are probably each a giant raw nerve, ready to burst into tears. I try to alleviate some of that by setting expectations for my involvement and check-in as we get close to the big day. Also, common courtesy and manners are both refreshing and appreciated..
