I hired Ted 100% because of the reviews he had. I had over 4 different people/companies bid out the project to replace our 50 gal with a 75 gal water heater. They were all about the same price so i went with Ted. He seemed to know what he was doing and has a lot of experience. I can say I'm glad I hired him. He did a really great job and cares about his business relationship with you so I feel confident if anything is wrong he will fix it. He was quick and to the point not necessarily a talkative guy he just likes to get in there and get the job done for you and do a good job.

We had our AC go bad soon after the first heat wave in SLC, and Monarch responded and was out that afternoon (2 hours quicker than I expected). Within 10-15 minutes a diagnosis was reached, and within an hour the repair was completed and we were cool again. Thanks!

I suspected a bad heating element so I already had an idea of what the cost would be. His quote was on the low end ... was actually a little better than what I expected. I have an older machine so I was not surprised that he did not have the parts on hand. I was surprised by how quickly he was able to get them and how conscientious his customer service was (His wife called me to let me know when the part would be in and that I was a priority because I had to wait.

Boyd came out to fix our furnace. The blower motor had to be replaced. After replacing the motor he was able to diagnose another problem with a PC board that controlled the blower. Rather than leave us with no heat, he was able to wire the blower to continually run on low until he could replace the board which wasn't available locally. I really appreciated Boyd knowledge and professionalism. He kept in communication with me and did what he promised. I really liked that he would come late afternoon/early evening so I did not have to miss work. I will call him again if I need HVAC services.

The thing I appreciate most about Jim, is his customer service and honesty. I thought I was gong to pay a lot for something and he turned around and said "ya know what, this is really easy and you could do it yourself" How amazing is that! Not only that but he took time to answer any questions I had. I will be contacting jim when I install heating in cooling in my home that is being built. Nothing is more important then the peace of mind knowing that you are dealing with an honest to goodness company.

Zach was available right away when I had an issue. I appreciated that he was willing to work with me, and although I spent a fortune fixing an old furnace, he did a thorough and quick job so that we had heat again the same day. He was very friendly and easy to work with, he even offered me a steep discount when I’m ready to replace the furnace in a year or two. Highly recommend.

I got several different quotes from other heating places and everyone tried to sell me furnaces that were very expensive. Daniel's den was the only one that gave me options that would fit my budget. I'm very pleased with there work.

Bret was great! When he first came out for the appraisal and quote he took the time to walk me through the process and gave me information that other specialists had not. He showed up to do the work on time and was on budget. We now have a great new heating and cooling system. Thank you, Bret!

Our AC unit has been broken all summer! We had someone scheduled to come and that fell through. I found DSI, and they were very quick to respond and very professional! They were able to get us on the schedule and got our AC unit fixed. It was the best feeling in the world to watch the temperature on the thermostat go down from 88 to a nice, cool 70. DSI was well priced too! Thank you so much for saving us from th summer heat!

Wayne and his crew were fantastic! He got me in really quick. He beat the competitors prices. His tech guy was very nice and helpful. He gave me a bid and stuck to it. Didn't try to sale me on anything else. He even left me with some extra filters for my furnace. They did a good job of protecting my floors and cleaning up after themselves. I would absolutely recommend them and use them again. It was a great experience! Especially after the other companies I have tried to work with that were awful.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who fixes furnaces?

If your furnace needs to be repaired, you’ll want to find a qualified heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) repair technician. Each state has its own licensing requirements; some require all HVAC technicians to have an HVAC license, while others only require someone operating an HVAC service and installation company with employees to hold a contractor’s license. For example, in Alabama, the Alabama Board of Heating Air Conditioning, and Refrigeration Contractors regulates licensing, while in Kansas there is no state regulatory body and HVAC licensing can vary by region. For simple furnace repairs like changing out a filter, a trusted handyman can probably handle the job, but a trained professional should be hired for tasks like replacing a gas valve, installing a new inducer fan motor or other critical furnace repair jobs that involve dealing with gas leaks or other dangerous conditions. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost me to replace my furnace?

The national average for furnace replacement is between $1,800 and $2,500. The cost can range dramatically higher depending on the model of furnace you select, any repair work you require, your location and the cost of installation. Furnace installation costs can be more than the furnace itself due to the cost of doing business and the expertise needed to install the HVAC equipment. Installing a new furnace generally requires technical know-how and the proper tools and licensing. It’s best to hire a pro and budget for furnace installation rather than risk potentially unsafe DIY installation. This will ensure your home’s safety. Check to see if your HVAC contractor has the proper licensing to do the job. If you need duct repair or replacement, expect to pay more for your furnace installation costs. The price for duct repair could be an hourly rate ranging on average anywhere from $85 to $150 per hour, with additional costs for parts.

How much does it cost to replace a gas furnace?

The cost to replace your gas furnace will vary based on the type and size of furnace you select, labor and installation costs, and any repairs your HVAC system may need. Nationally, average HVAC prices for a heating specialist range between $1,800 and $2,500. It’s important to select the right size gas furnace for your heating needs. A furnace that’s too small won’t heat your house properly, while a furnace that’s too large will run inefficiently, cycling on and off and likely breaking down sooner. HVAC specialists calculate your exact heat needs by measuring your home and incorporating variables such as the regional climate and your home’s level of insulation. Retail pricing for gas furnaces can range from $650 up to $3,000 and more. The higher the AFUE (annual fuel utilization efficiency) rating of the furnace, the more efficient it is at turning fuel into heat and the lower your carbon footprint and utility bill will be. HVAC installation costs are often based on an hourly rate and can range from under $50 to over $100 per hour, depending on the company and the furnace being installed. Higher-end furnaces cost more to install because they require added labor and expertise. For a typical installation, it might take two HVAC installation pros one day or less to remove your old furnace and replace it with a new one.

How much does it cost to have your furnace cleaned?

To keep your furnace in good working order it’s important to have it regularly cleaned. The national average furnace cleaning cost ranges from $60 to $80, though prices can vary greatly based on where you live in the country and what your furnace maintenance includes. An HVAC company may have different rates for different levels of furnace maintenance. For example, one company may offer general furnace maintenance for $79 and advanced maintenance for $138. Another company may offer a 38-point maintenance check for $89 and a 64-point maintenance check for $178. According to Energy.gov, a standard furnace cleaning and maintenance visit can include:

  • Checking the vent connection pipe and chimney
  • Checking the physical integrity of the heat exchanger
  • Adjusting the controls to provide optimum air temperatures
  • Checking the combustion chamber for cracks
  • Testing for carbon monoxide (CO)
  • Adjusting the blower control and supply-air temperature
  • Cleaning and oiling the blower
  • Removing soot and corrosion from the furnace
  • Checking the fuel input and flame characteristics
  • Sealing the connections between the furnace and the main ducts

How much will it cost me to replace my air conditioner?

If your AC system is in need of replacement, the national average air conditioner installation costs range from $2,930 to $3,670. Costs can vary greatly depending on whether you are replacing a wall or window unit or a central air system. A central air system is connected to ductwork that runs throughout your house and pumps cooled air into your various rooms via vents and registers. A central air conditioning system is far more costly than wall or window units. Selecting a central AC system that has a high seasonal energy-efficiency ratio (SEER) will likely lower both your carbon footprint and your utility bill. The type of AC system you select, where you live in the country, and the regional costs of HVAC work, duct removal and replacement, and ductwork repairs that are needed are some of the main factors that affect the cost of new air conditioner installation. Here are some examples of average costs for installing forced-air systems.

  • Install Lennox 16 SEER single-stage AC unit: $5,743
    • Removing and disposing of the old furnace, moving and reconnecting the water heater, and installing a 3.5-ton gas furnace. The job took 18 hours of labor.
  • Installation of a new 14 SEER single-range cooling system: $4,000-$6,000
  • Installation of a new 16 SEER two-range cooling system: $6,000-$8,000
  • Installation of a new 20 SEER variable capacity cooling system: $8,000-$12,000
