I think Jake did an excellent job, and he is a very hard worker. He is very conscientious in his work, and is very nice and knowledgeable. He did an extra side job that I really appreciate him doing. The only reason I didn't give Jake five stars is because sometimes he didn't come at the time he said he would and didn't call me as to why, I had to call him or his dad. Also, sometimes they didn't call me back when I left messages, so I had to just sit around and wait and couldn't really plan my day. I would definitely recommend Jake and would hire him again. There is one little job that he forgot to do that we talked about (I didn't notice it until I had paid him and he was gone; I had to leave before he was done, so I gave him the check before I left). I called him that night after I got home and noticed it hadn't been done. He said he would drop by my house and do it today, but he didn't. This is what I meant before, I wish if he wasn't able to come when he said he would, that he would call and tell me and we could figure something else out. I really hope he comes back and does it for me because that is one of the things we talked about getting done, and I hope he returns my calls if I need to call him back about it.

I had a pipe burst and needed to find a skilled handyman to do the work for a fair price. Check! Daniel was awesome! Not only did he come on time, he was efficient in his work time- he had the job done quick! He was clean in appearance and treated my home with respect. Cleaned up his work area and left the house better than he found it. It's rare to find someone like that! He was up front and honest through the whole process from bid, work, to final payment which shows integrity. I would rehire him for any work at my house and recommend you do the same. Thanks Quality Handyman Solutions!

I worked with this company a few months back on remodeling our guest house. I was very pleased with the work the did. Getting the project started took a little while. I met with Char which to my understanding is the project manager it was a delight work with her. When the builder showed up he created exactly what I wanted. They where there to help us and answer our questions. The companies that come out before them where making us feel like just another job. I would and have recommended this company. They are currently working on my sister in law's house in Ogden.

I am not usually home when handymen usually want to come to my house because I work 8-5, but Christian came at 7:30 before I had to go to work so that I could show him around and he could give me a quote. Will update if I end up working with him.

Todd was fantastic! He provided great work and was very professional throughout the entire process. He even went the extra mile to patch and paint a few areas of the house that were outside the scope of the bid. Thanks!

They came and did the washer dryer hookup and got it working in 30 minutes . The only reason I'm taking 1 star away is because of some miscommunication. I was expecting them to come at 12 . I told Sandra the day before to let me know ahead of time if anything changes but I haven't heard till 12:15 from them. But they did manage to get at my house by 2 pm and was professional and quick. I will call them again if needed but I will just remind them of the appointment time again.

It was a pleasure working with Justin. He was very thorough and made sure he got our shelves down to the exact size, type of wood and color that we wanted. The fact that he didn't charge us extra for supplies was a breath of fresh air. Most contractors will double your price simply from charging you more for supplies. But he didn't. He bought them at his cost and we just paid him for his time and hard work. We absolutely love our floating shelves that he created for our living room. It was exactly what we wanted and he got it done quicker than we thought too! We'll definitely be hiring him to do a few other projects in our house like creating the mud room and fixing a light in our kitchen.

Sam came to my house on a cool Tuesday morning (bright and early) to remove a patch of dirt (weed patch) at the front of my house. It took all day - the weather didn't cooperate, but Sam dug up the dirt, put it back by our garden, and monitored the concrete until it set. I did a last minute change and had him add some color. Excellent job! If I wasn't paying for a wedding in NY, I would keep him busy with a BUNCH of projects. Thanks Sam!

Shane was terrific. He was very communicative and arrived on time. He was able to assess the job and give me his recommendations, and help select a rack to mount our TV on the wall. Then he came and fixed it up very nicely. These old houses can be a hassle, and he took his time to do the job correctly. Very pleased and would recommend him and hire him again.

There are many contractors out there who will complete a project, but I've met very few who are such masters of their craft and treat a job like it's their own house. This was Jack's approach to our project. We had Jack install tongue & groove boards on our ceiling. He and his team took the time to consider all details and ensure it was something he could be proud of. We love it, and hope we can find a painter who has the same pride in their workmanship to finish it. Without hesitation I would refer family or friends to hire Jack.

John has been fantastic — he’s done several projects for us and they have each turned out really well. He’s been doing this for quite a while now and always seems able to bring in skilled professionals at a moments notice, no matter the job. We live in a 19th century house with a lot of projects left to do, and we definitely hope to continue working with him.

Spettro Remodels helped us with remodeling our house that we recently purchased. It needed new flooring to replace the nasty carpet and vinyl sheeting that was throughout the home. Their suggestion to put in LVP flooring throughout the main floor was excellent and their workmanship was superb. Carpet was also replaced for our upstairs living area. We also had them replace all of the baseboards, casings, and headers throughout the home along with installing a new front entry door. Would work with this company again the next remodeling project.

We hired CM Industries to do all of the finish work on our new house. We were under time constraints to meet our deadline and get everything done. Clark was upfront about how long everything should take and he followed through with that timeline. The finish work he did included laying the hardwood floor and tile, doing all of the casing, painting the whole house, doing all of the shelving throughout the closets in the house, hanging the doors, and putting our indoor stair-railing in. Clark has a great attention to detail and through every part of the job he talked with me to make sure he was doing it like I wanted, and that it was quality work. I can honestly say that without Clark we would not have met our deadlines and ended up with such a beautiful house. I am so impressed with the work Clark did and how kind and respectful he and his crew were. I would hire Clark again in a heartbeat, and I would feel confident recommending him to my friends and family.

Todd completed a job for me a few weeks ago. I was very happy that he responded to my call almost immediately. We set up a meeting to look at my job, he was very punctual. Todd did a good job on my project and he was very easy to have around the house. I would also like to mention that he had the right equipment to do the project correctly, Thanks Todd

Excellent work. Brett installed our fence quickly. He also took our ideas for the fence and he built upon those ideas to construct a fence that was both unique and beautiful. Many people in our neighborhood stopped to admire his work and set up their own future projects. Besides the fence, Brett also redid our front awning and railing. We had hired a handyman last year and he did a terrible job: I had to fire the guy. Brett came in and completely remodeled the terrible work and ended up creating a beautiful masterpiece that will give our house significant curbside appeal. He was very friendly and easy to talk to. He worked hard to make sure we knew what he was doing and to work on both these projects quickly. He was there everyday working long hours to finish the projects in a very timely manner. His prices, for the high quality work he performed was also very reasonably priced: no buyers remorse here. We are so impressed by Brett's devotion to customer service and masterfully skilled work and outcome, that we plan on hiring Brett again next time we have some major projects on the house. Do not hesitate to call him.

Felipe did such a great job. He was always prompt and showed me what was going on with the job. Nothing was a surprise at the end. He gave a great value and got the job done on time. He took what we had done and what the builders had sloppily done and made it look really great. I highly recommend him!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a contractor?

Hiring a general contractor is a good idea for many remodeling projects. Home renovation contractors have a broad range of skills to manage, coordinate and complete a project. They should help make sure your project comes in on time and within your budget as they hire and supervise all the necessary subcontractors, including electricians and plumbers. They also handle procuring all the materials required for your job. Some homeowners look to save money by acting as their own contractor, but an experienced home renovation contractor is worth the cost. They should know local building codes, be able to pull all necessary permits, and work with inspectors to make sure the construction meets local codes. Also, because they get professional discounts, they can typically buy materials at a better price than you can; better prices on materials and labor save you money, and make up for at least a percentage of the cost of the contractor.

Do I need a contractor for a kitchen remodel?

A kitchen remodel is one of the most important investments you can make in your home, and it’s critical to get the details right; that’s where a home renovation contractor comes in. A minor remodel usually includes new cabinet faces and hardware, replacement appliances, and paint, while an extensive job may enlarge the kitchen’s square footage, install new cabinets or an island, change the layout, and lay new tile or hardwood floors. Any renovation that includes filing permits, construction, or electrical or plumbing work is best completed by an experienced contractor who knows local codes.

How much will it cost to remodel my house?

The cost to remodel a home is highly variable — size and scope of the project, quality of materials, and the number of subcontractors required to complete the job all affect the total cost. The average national cost of a home renovation project is $13,500. The national average per-square-foot cost of a remodel ranges from $25 to $100. Nationally, kitchen and bathroom remodels are the most popular types of projects, in part because they typically have the highest return on investment when the home is sold. The national average cost of a major kitchen remodel ranges from $25,000 to $62,000, while the average bathroom remodel tends to cost $6,000 to $18,000. In addition to materials and labor costs, many remodeling project costs include permit fees, which, average $900 or more, depending on your location.

When should you hire a contractor?

A few home remodeling projects can be done by an ambitious DIY-minded homeowner or local handyman, but many are best completed by a professional home renovation contractor. You should hire a contractor when you’re planning a large project that takes time, machinery or large tools, and several workers; a kitchen remodel, new bathroom or home addition will be most successful with a licensed, expert contractor at the helm. It’s particularly important to have a professional contractor on board for construction, electrical, plumbing and HVAC projects that require inspections to meet local building codes. Of course, you can hire a contractor for smaller projects, too, if you prefer to let an expert handle things like addition or removal of a wall, small framing projects, or anything that requires a permit.

You should hire a contractor when you’re ready to start a remodeling project and you have plans, a budget and a timeline for the work in hand, but before any remodeling work begins.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
