Replaced support beams after a new concrete porch was poured and jacked up the sagging roof. Fair priced and they communicate with you which is hard to come by with contractors. They gave me 2 bids and had the job done the following week. I would hire them again for sure.

We hired Scott to do the carpentry work on our front porch remodel. He clearly is a craftsman with breadth and depth of expertise. He thoroughly and thoughtfully walked us through the project upfront sharing important insights regarding the complexity of the project given the almost 70 year old original construction. As he began work he shared important updates along the way, was flexible as the design took a few different turns, and was very easy to communicate and work with. I'd recommend him to anyone interested in quality craftsmanship and clear upfront communication. We look forward to having Scott back to do additional work on our home in a few months. He's quite busy. Well worth the wait.

I live in an old building, and the windows needed sealing. Rob was available super fast and was very courteous. Had a little issue with one of the windows, and he came right away to not only fix the one, but check all the others!

Daniel was awesome, he was even a little early... he did several things for me. Hung 4 towel racks in 2 bathrooms, drilled and put in 30 cupboard door handles. I have an electric light switch that doesn’t work. Daniel gave it his best shot, told be I better hire an electrician. He also secured the deck step on the front porch... I hope to have him back next week to change out 3 light fixtures! I would definitely recommend this young man!

JV Construction remodeled our front porch. Their bid came in much lower than the competitors and the remodel was done ahead of schedule. Any questions or concerns were addressed quickly and our front porch is beautiful. We would hire JV Construction again.

Brady supplied, installed and painted about 250 LF of crown molding in our home. His attention to detail and overall craftsmanship was above and beyond our expectations. Unlike our other contractor experiences, Brady was always a prompt communicator and made a strong effort to make sure we were happy throughout the process. We liked his work so much we asked him to build a custom porch swing, raise and refinish our porch ceiling and handle miscellaneous electrical work around the house. His prices were always fair, his work was completed in a timely manner and we’ve been very happy with the results. We would recommend Brady to anyone.

Rico did a great job coming up with a solution to our rusted out support on a porch railing. The repair looks natural and the safety and integrity of the railing has been restored. He was very responsive to my questions and showed up when he said he would. Definitely would hire him again.

Jordan was great to work with. He is detail-oriented, yet gets the job done quickly. He did a lot more than paint...he helped us repair some trim, painted and fixed the concrete porch, and more! He has the knowledge and tools for going the extra mile in making small repairs/fixes in any room and house exterior. We would absolutely hire him again!

These guys are awesome. They are polite, professional, I would trust them with my kids. They did a phenomenal job laying marble in my entire kitchen with marble backsplash, which is much more difficult to install than tile. These guys are phenomenal. The job was done quickly, every question I had was answered, every additional ask I had was done. I would recommend these guys to anyone.

Although I had always felt an improved porch and handrail would be nice to have, I was hesitant to bring in a professional. Chief among my concerns were the level of quality, professionalism, and the level of trust I would ultimately need to have that the carpenter would be able to realize something consistent with my vision for a reasonable price. After carefully vetting other options, I can confidently say that Bauman Woodwork won me over pretty easily, and my concerns were easily resolved. One of the most striking things about Bauman Woodwork is the fact that they're clearly in the business of passion, not construction. The attention to detail in scoping, building, and finishing the woodwork are all evidence of a skilled craftsman. I may not have had a perfect idea of what the final porch needed to look like, but they quickly made sense of what I did know I wanted and put together a thing of beauty. The finished project is more than complementary- it elevates the home. Not only was the woodwork itself expert in execution, the owner was an absolute delight to work for. I couldn't have imagined a more friendly, awesome professional to have working on a major project around the house. The five star review is well earned for an all around positive experience!

We had David replace some old cement stairs on our front porch. We were so pleased with his work that we had him put in two large cement pads in out back yard. David was always there at the time he said he would be, and his work was exceptional. It is nice to know that there is still someone you can hire that has an impressive work ethic. We have been so happy with his work that we are thinking about having him build an awning over the cement pads he put in last year.

Mike worked with me on a few projects one was a deck rebuild which went very well. Another was a porch that had a lot of damage needing new stairs and railings and dry rot replaced. He always showed up when he said he would which is quality hard to find these days. He did a great job and cleaned up after himself.

Joe contacted me about my project very quickly & came to my home to give me a bid. He was extremely professional, the bid was written out for me & he was honest about the time frame. Once we signed the contract things moved very quickly. Joe was very prompt, clean and explained everything as the work progressed. He replaced our driveway, walkway, & stairs up to the front porch. We have had many compliments from the neighbors. I would recommend Joe very highly to anyone!

We are selling our house and we had sinking, cracking concrete between the garage and the porch. Dustin came and ripped the old concrete out and poured the new concrete. He did an amazing job - it looks great, he was very nice, personable and got it done fast. I will recommend him to friends and family, and hire him again for future work at our new house.

R.J replaced rotten boards on a balcony, retiled a porch and in the process had to replace all the boards because they were not in good shape. He also had to rebuild two side posts that were falling apart. He also replaced a walkway. He did a great job in all of these tasks. He was easy to talk to and exchange ideas on how the job should be done if I happened to disagree. He shared his honest opinion even if it was not what I wanted to hear and I appreciated that. The only reservation is that one needs to check and make sure that what he is doing is what you intend to have done and avoid short cut. I recommend him for his work and I plan on asking him to work for me in the future.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
