I hired Ted 100% because of the reviews he had. I had over 4 different people/companies bid out the project to replace our 50 gal with a 75 gal water heater. They were all about the same price so i went with Ted. He seemed to know what he was doing and has a lot of experience. I can say I'm glad I hired him. He did a really great job and cares about his business relationship with you so I feel confident if anything is wrong he will fix it. He was quick and to the point not necessarily a talkative guy he just likes to get in there and get the job done for you and do a good job.

When I bought my house the inspector told me I needed an expansion tank installed on my water heater. I had all the equipment purchased and ready. Aaron gave me a great quote price and was able to get it done quickly. He showed up right on time and told me right away that I didn't need the expansion tank due to a specific valve on the tank. He was very honest and upfront about not needing the install. He also answered a few question I had about my fireplace. I'll be using Aaron from now on for all plumbing needs. Thanks!

Nate did a solid job installing my water heater on pretty short notice. He arrived when he said he would and explained to me everything he did once the job was complete. Even was patient enough to stick around while I tested the new water heater. Every job is different of course, but so far so good and I would recommend Nate to others looking for a value install man.

We had such a great experience with Expert Plumbing, Heating, and Air. From the beginning of booking the appointment and how fast they were able to come and take care of our water heater. They were on time and gave us all our options to fix the issue we were having instead of upselling me on unnecessary things. The respect this company has for you is so great because as a new homeowner we don't always know what is best or right but the amount of information that they give you makes you feel confident in the product you are getting and value from this company. Allen was so great. He called us before both appointments and even showed up early for our first appointment. He made sure that the work was done in a timely manner and that all our questions were answered before and after he completed the work. When Allen and Spencer came to install our new water heater there were quick and efficient in completing the work in a timely manner so that we could get hot water back in our home. The fact that this company has such great, honest, hard working people will make me want to use them again and again. Thank you for such a great experience Expert Plumbing, Heating, and Air. I look forward to working with you again.

Nothing bad to say. I had a water heater leak. Water heater was installed in 1991 (WOW). I discovered the leak at 7am. By 12:30pm the whole thing was replaced and brought up to code. The quote was cheaper than the 4 others that I got.

Terry replaced the main water line and installed a back flow prevention device on my sprinkler system. He was able to work me In immediately. His crew exposed the line taking care to protect the grass and flower beds. When the plumbing work was done they restored the landscaping. About two weeks later the back flow prevention device malfunctioned and Terry returned within half an hour of being called to check it and got it working again. I am very happy with the work that was done!

Friendly service, I feel like they gave me a more than fair price. I needed a new hot water heater and a faucet installed. They were nice enough to install the faucet for free! They were able to fit me in quickly, arrived when they said they would and did great work.

He asked to come over the day before he was scheduled in order to do some measurements for the water heater installation, but ended up staying and getting the job done then and there. He was thorough, meticulous and even has a fun sense of humor. Highly recommended!

Mr JL was punctual, and patient as we searched for a hose for my faucet. I had to buy a new faucet, and was pleased to have JWs advice. He quickly installed the faucet with no problems, and I appreciate his wide experience. I will ask for his expertise in the future. He did have a personal problem and was unable to call me earlier.

In an attempt to open up a beauty salon, I acquired services from Mr. Anthony Bivens. As both time and money were issues in my new business venture, Anthony came highly recommended. Services rendered included, but were not limited too the complete install of a water heater, revamp of HVAC, the plumbing and install as it relates to a bathroom sink and utility sink, two (2) shampoo bowls, and ventilating doors, etc. As I hired Anthony for services directly related to "Plumbing, Heating and Air," I have to admit that I became uneasy when he advised that he was also comfortable with areas surrounding electricity. With that said, Anthony also installed a minimum of seven (7) lighting fixtures. It is important to note that my "Master Electrician" wanted in excess of $400 to just "install" these fixtures at his own convenience. Not only did Anthony install timely, but charged me a fraction of the cost. Needless to say, Anthony saved me a great deal of money during this project as the term "HandyMan" is an understatement. Finally, as getting the work done is already stressful in itself, Anthony comes with the knowledge, skills, and ability to articulate your problem in a way that you will be able to understand, but more importantly, offer viable solutions without any hidden agenda or desire to upsell. With that, I will only use Mr. Bivens who I deem reliable, timely, and affordable, going forward. I found Mr. Bivens to be a pleasure to work. Do not be fooled by his small stature as his capabilities as it related to my project, were unlimited.. It is important to note that all work was signed off and approved by the City Building Inspectors. Thanks Again Anthony... Design Extensions

I have worked with Kore Investments on several home improvement projects. In this case they replaced 2 old doors with new ones. We live in an older home without standard door sizes. They did a professional job in manually cutting and fitting the doors. They look like they were custom made for our 1941 home. They were quick and efficient from quote to invoice. I would highly recommend Kore Investments to anyone looking to do a home improvement or maintenance project. They've done everything from updating electrical, replacing windows with doors, installing a water heater, and now replacing 2 exterior doors. The knowledge and expertise of Matt LeMelle and his team is extensive. There is no home project I wouldn't consult and hire them for.

I called on Thanksgiving night after coming home to a water heater that was leaking everywhere and we had no hot water. I called around 10pm and he was willing to walk me through steps to complete so it would stop leaking. He was able to come first thing the next morning and was efficient and professional. He went the extra mile to explain what exactly was wrong and what he was doing to fix it. He got the leak to stop and was able to turn our hot water back on quickly! Very happy with his service and will definitely be calling him for future repairs!

Mr. Rick Gord of RG Plumbing arrived promptly at 7:00 a.m. to give us an estimate on a new water heater (old one was leaking). The estimate was reasonable, and he offered to do the job right then. Ran and got the new heater, installed it with new accessories bringing us up to code. Also checked & adjusted our water pressure and was finished by 10:20 a.m. He did all of the work himself and was extremely professional. I would highly recommend Rick Gord, Plumber with RG Plumbing.

Ron came to my house on the weekend to devise a temporary fix for my leaking water heater and spent a lot of time talking through options with me. When he came back for the install, he expertly adjusted the positioning for proper fit. Expeditious and professional work...thanks, Ron.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long is a water heater supposed to last?

Your water heater is an essential part of your home, heating water for showers, dishwashing, laundry and more. On average, a traditional water heater will last 8-12 years. The general consensus is that it’s better to replace your water heater with a new one than to repair one that’s 10 years old or more. Older models are less energy-efficient and thus more costly to run than newer models with better technology. Here are some indicators of when it may be time to replace an old water heater instead of repairing it:

  • Leaks: If leaking is not caused by loose connections, the water may be seeping out through slight fractures in the metal of the tank that have formed over time.
  • Strange noises: Clanking, rumbling and other noises can mean that sediment has formed on the base of your tank, contributing to fissures leaks, and inefficiency.
  • Age: If it’s more than 10 years old, it’s probably time to replace.
  • Discolored or rusty water: Have a pro check it out; if the problem isn’t resolved by draining and cleaning, you’ll want to replace the heater.
  • Lack of hot water: Inconsistent heating and hot water supply that runs out too quickly likely means it’s time for a new unit.

How much does it cost to install a hot water heater?

You’ll know when it’s time to install a new water heater. Water heater installation costs average between $360 and $780 nationally, with rates increasing depending on the project. The total project cost will be higher when you include the cost of the heater itself. Select your new water heater based on the number of occupants in your home and the number of gallons of capacity you’ll need. Installation costs can vary based on the type of water heater you are removing and the type you are installing, any necessary repairs, regional cost of labor, and whether disposal of the old heater is included. Natural gas water heaters retail on average between $650 and $900 for standard models. Electric water heaters range between $300 and $700 for standard models. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $250 and $700 for standard models. Tankless gas water heaters retail on average between $200 and $1,300.

A company may charge approximately $1,000 to replace a 50-gallon tank-style electric water heater (not including any upgrades required by building codes). Replacing a gas-powered water heater might cost $1,100 (not including code upgrades). Some companies roll the disposal of an old heater into the overall cost of the new water heater installation. Other professionals charge an additional removal fee that can range from $35 to $150.

Why is the water in my house not getting hot?

If the water in your house is not getting hot, it may be time for water heater repair. Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400, depending on the problem and materials. Competent homeowners may also be able to try DIY fixes, whether they have a traditional gas or electric water heater or a tankless gas or electric heater. Troubleshooting the different issues that can arise with each of the styles requires some knowledge of how they operate and what red flags to look out for. For a natural gas water heater, the first step is to check whether the pilot light has gone out. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s directions if you want to relight it yourself. If you smell gas, stop everything and call your gas company — the smell could signal a dangerous gas leak. If your household’s water is not getting hot enough, you can try increasing the temperature on the water heater’s front dial above the standard setting of 120 degrees; for safety, always turn off electricity to the unit before adjusting temperatures. If you keep running out of hot water, your household may simply need a higher-capacity water heater, so consider upgrading. Quick professional fixes include replacing the thermostat or heating elements and cleaning and repairing the thermocouple.

How much does it cost to install a tankless hot water heater?

Tankless water heaters usually cost more to install than traditional tanks, because many homes need to be retrofitted to accommodate the new system. Tankless electric water heaters retail on average between $150 and $1,200, and tankless natural gas water heaters retail between $200 and $1,300 on average. The lower prices ($150-$250) are generally for point-of-use tankless heaters that can be installed to boost hot water in high-demand areas such as the bathroom or kitchen sink. Tankless water heaters designed to heat whole homes usually start under $300 at the low end and go up to $1,400 or more. Pricing for whole-home varies with the heater’s technology and features. Nationally, standard water heater installation costs average $360-$780, but tankless water heater installation costs may range from $400 to $1,000, depending on the work needed. Some perks of tankless water heaters are that they have nearly double the life expectancy of traditional water heaters and are generally more cost-efficient. Homeowners may be able to save $100 or more per year on their utility bills with an Energy Star approved tankless heater, depending on how much hot water they use.

How much does it cost to fix a hot water heater?

Nationally, the average water heater repair cost ranges between $120 and $200, although prices can range up to $400 or more. Water heater repair costs will depend on the type of water heater you have (tankless, electric, natural gas, etc.), the source of the problem, the cost for new parts, and labor rates in your area. Common water heater issues include problems with the thermocouple, thermostat, heating element and leaks. Most standard electric water heaters have two thermostats and two elements. One example for the cost to replace a bad thermostat is $185 for parts and labor. Replacing both the thermostat and the heating element could cost approximately $150-$200. The thermocouple is a safety device that senses when the pilot light is burning and signals the gas valve to close if the pilot light goes out. If your thermocouple is bad or corroded, the average cost to clean and repair it could be between $350 and $400. If your water heater has started to leak, it is usually more cost-effective to invest in a new water heater than to repair it, unless you’re covered by a warranty.
