They built a small back porch for me and overall it was great. Beautiful redwood and the job was done quickly. They accidentally broke the outer pane of a double pane window and totally took responsibility for getting it fixed quickly and wouldn’t accept payment for the porch until the window was fixed. The only problem was a nail had come out the other side of a post and is splitting the wood slightly. You can barely notice it. I had asked if they would fix it and they said they would but that was over a month ago. Still, overall the experience was good.

Rob did a great job replacing a tile, repairing an access panel, fixing my sliding glass door, and installing door knobs for me. He replied quickly, was efficient, and the price was reasonable considering I was able to find him same-day. I will definitely use him again for any handyman needs!

I needed a 6’ section of fence replace with an additional 6’ gate to the RV pad and man gate replaced from natural wear & tear. After meeting and explaining what I wanted & expected, within a couple days, Bill emailed me a his bid for the job with a breakdown on the material, labor after interviewing a couple of local handymen, ended up being a fair proposal. He did his prep work by digging the needed fence post hole and setting the post in concrete a few days before he was actually schedule to show up for the job. He showed up on time and worked non-stop throughout the day. Once the job was completed he also was willing to do a few little extras by repairing our ailing neighbor’s gate and secured a section of fence at no extra charge. He really cares about the work he does supported with his professional attitude.

Mark saved me about $700 on a meterbox installation project and he really, really, really went above and beyond. There were some hiccups with the city that we ran into which required an inspection that the power company initially told me I didn't need, but he rolled with the punches, and finished everything super cleanly. Mark went out of his way to make sure my project was done in a clean, professional, up-to-code manner, and even assisted in hauling away some of my junk and scrap metal at no additional cost to me. Aside from his professional manner and high quality work, Mark is just an all-around good guy who is really looking to give you a good deal on your handyman projects. I will definitely hire Mark again for future home projects.

Had a pretty long driveway that needed installing right away - 10 x 100. Not only was Sam prompt and courteous, but he really did over deliver on services and performance. We were very happy with the work performed- nice clean finish, did everything he said he would, we will definitely look to use his company in the future.

We needed our fence gate repaired. Mr. Hansen figured out the best way to fix it so it would be strong and not blow down in the windstorm that frequent our area. The fence looks great. He gave us an honest price and completed it over a 1 week period

Workers LLC tore down and disposed of an existing fence and replaced it with quality cedar wood. The job also entailed building a gate and staining the fence. They did an excellent job. This is the first time I've used Thumbtack and the first time I've used Workers LLC. I was extremely pleased with the streamlined quotes and feel lucky to have met Mike from Workers LLC. I live in Virginia and my property is in Utah. I coordinated everything online or on the phone with Mike. I've already hired him to do some more work for our properties. He is very trustworthy; he performed the exact work he promised for the price he quoted me. He finished in a timely manner and was very professional to work with. I recommend him to anyone looking for a professional contractor/handyman. I sent him a text about some potential mold in my house and he sent me a copy of his certificate as a certified mold remover. He and his team are definitely more than fence installers. They will be my "go to" handymen for anything I need at our properties. I rate them above OUTSTANDING! Thanks Mike/Workers LLC and Thumbtack! Stacy

Kelon explained where my roof was leaking, and what needed to be done. Repair work was done very quickly, with all work, plus more, cleaned up. Kelon was a pleasure to work with. Also, having had others come out to give me a bid as well, Kelon was the ONLY ONE that explained what/where the issue was, and what it would take to fix the problem. The others never explained what the issue was, only what it would cost to replace my whole roof!!! Kelon is on speed dial!!!

I've used Brendon Helmke for several years, he has done building repairs, underground sprinkler system, yard leveling and grass seeding, roof cleaning, installed supplemental insulation, lighting with switch, water feature maintenance, driveway lighting, and many other jobs I fail to remember right now! Brendon is all the things I've noted above, high quality, professional, responsive, and punctual. Brendon is always reasonably priced and is a great value in everything he does.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.
