We hired Scott to do the carpentry work on our front porch remodel. He clearly is a craftsman with breadth and depth of expertise. He thoroughly and thoughtfully walked us through the project upfront sharing important insights regarding the complexity of the project given the almost 70 year old original construction. As he began work he shared important updates along the way, was flexible as the design took a few different turns, and was very easy to communicate and work with. I'd recommend him to anyone interested in quality craftsmanship and clear upfront communication. We look forward to having Scott back to do additional work on our home in a few months. He's quite busy. Well worth the wait.

Brock was absolutely above and beyond our expectations. We had many small jobs to be done ranging from plumbing, major woodwork repair, cleaning items and maintenance plus a problem job which he came up with an idea to fix it. He was always letting us know what he was doing, He was prompt, he was friendly and professional. He completed our jobs and some extra things in a timely manner. We will go with Cranston again because of Brock. A mention to Jack. Jack was friendly and professional. His responses were what made us chose Cranston. Thanks to Brock for his positive and hardworking attitude. We will call you again. Soon. Luana Chilelli

Caleb helped us to design a beautiful wooden sink and cabinet for our (loosely) Japanese-style bathroom. We had only vague notions of how we wanted the room to feel, and he helped translate that into a physical reality. He was open to all of our ideas and willing to go down different roads, and ultimately we came to something that made sense together. The functionality of the piece is excellent - the drawers open with a gentle nudge, and water flows from one side of the basin to the drain on the other side in elegant little water streams. But in addition to the functionality, the piece is also incredibly beautiful. He assembled two different woods - mindful to balance aesthetics and cost - and did whatever magical carpentry things were needed to bring out the beauty in each. We are eager to work with Caleb again in the future, to build an armoire to match. He is a masterful carpenter. We cannot recommend Caleb heartily enough.

My husband and I were looking for open shelving with a rustic/industrial feel for our kitchen. Chris was able to look at the space and a single "inspiration" picture of what we had in mind and came up with some great ideas that matched our vision perfectly. Within a few weeks, he had the shelves ready for install and we really couldn't be happier with the outcome. The craftsmanship is impeccable and the overall look of the shelving is better than we could have ever anticipated. On top of the excellent product Chris provided, he is friendly and easy to work with, extremely knowledgeable (he had to work with our soft interior brick walls and protruding chimney), hard working, and creative. He even made sure the space was clean before he left! I've already consulted him on a future project and look forward to working with Chris again!

I worked with Zach to create a custom woodworking project. He easily understood the scope of what I was wanting built and handled it amazingly. It was crafted in blood wood and included leather padding. The quality is unreal. His communication was fantastic throughout the whole process. I would recommend Zach at pith designs for any custom project and will certainly be using him again.

FABULOUS!!!! My fence was designed and installed above my expectations. JT was incredibly thorough when constructing my fence, paid extra attention to detail, and produced a high quality, long lasting wooden fence. From quote to finished product took a week. A week! I'd hire JT again in a heartbeat. In the meantime, I'll gladly pimp out his name to my fellow homeowners who need mad woodworking skills. Thank you!!

Lenny and Tom did an amazing job with our kitchen. We could tell they took their job very seriously. They immediately fixed any issues they encountered, didn't whine about our walls not being level, and we never had to hassle them about anything. They set deadlines up front and met them. They respond to texts immediately and since they don't work on 10 jobs at once, you have their full attention. Good hardworking guys. And the cabinets? They look amazing! I only wish our other contractors were as professional as these guys were. We've already recommended them to friends and we'll use them again when we redo our bathroom.

McKinley came to my home quickly gave me a good price quote for the job and good recommendations for material. McKinley had immediate availablity to do the job and completed the job quickly with good quality. McKinley went above and beyond and took care of all our needs. He was available anytime by phone for any questions. I’m so happy we found him! Our nasty basement carpet was replaced with beautiful waterproof vinyl and new baseboards!

Todd did a great job on my house. He is very creative and has lots of great ideas. He transformed my old rambler style house into a real show case with great detail. The woodwork is awesome. He did some really fun things with some of the walls using wood and tile instead of just sheet rock. He was able to utilize the square footage of the house to give me all the things I was hoping for. Like walk in closets and main floor laundry. Large walk in shower. He transformed the living/ dining room area with lots of large windows that created a more open feeling and then added a large deck to make the living spaces appear larger as well as offering more entertaining options. Thanks again for all your great ideas and fine workmanship Todd.

I make sure my work is square, level, and plumb. Appealing to the eye and structurally sound. Many others are in such a hurry to get done, that they overlook quality craftsmanship. Their work often suffers because of it.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Who is a carpenter and what do they do?

Carpenters are skilled craftsmen who build things out of wood. Depending on what the carpenter builds, they may be referred to by various names. A framer is a carpenter who puts up the framing on a house. A trim or finish carpenter installs the finishing touches of prefabricated or custom trim and detail work once a house has been built and the walls are up. A furniture maker or woodworker builds furniture — such as tables, beds and dressers — out of wood. A cabinetmaker is a carpenter who builds custom and semi-custom wood cabinets. If you’re having a home built or remodeled, your general contractor will either provide or subcontract the carpentry work for the framing, cabinets and trim. You can hire a carpenter directly to update the trim in your home, build you a piece of custom furniture, or repair or replace your wood cabinets.

Do carpenters build houses?

Carpenters are trained to work with wood. That means that any part of your home that is built of wood is very likely to involve a carpenter. Framing carpenters will put up the wood that makes up the bones of your home. If you’re having a wood floor installed, it may be done by a carpenter — although being a carpenter is not a requirement to install flooring. Trim, baseboards, wainscoting and any other detail work is typically installed by a finish carpenter. The wood boxes of custom cabinets will be built and installed by a carpenter.

Although all of these components in your new or remodeled home are built by carpenters who specialize in building things with wood, a general contractor typically oversees construction of the entire house. If the general contractor is also a carpenter skilled in all these areas, they may well construct your entire home. More often, the general contractor subcontracts out the various building stages to different individuals, including carpenters.
