Bryan went above and beyond to fix some broken tiles I had in an entryway. Since I did not have any extra tiles, he glued the cracked ones together. Then he removed four of the good tiles that were in an area covered by a carpet and placed them where the broken ones were. Honestly, I can't even tell which ones were the broken ones. Brian is hard working, reliable and very professional. He does a wide variety of jobs. You name it and he will get it done. From now on he is my go to handyman. I would recommend Bryan to anyone who needs a job well done.

If you are looking for an honest, hard working concrete guy, Jake is your man! Jake installed a 12' x 12' concrete patio for our hot tub. His price was fair but more than anything he values completing the job to our satisfaction. He went above and beyond making sure we were satisfied with the final result. He poured on a hot day and the mix was setting quickly, he came back the next day to ensure quality was good and touched up all exposed edges with plaster. We are happy with our new pad and would definitely recommend Jake.

The guys did a fantastic job! They recapped my old porch making it bigger, added a beautiful stamped concrete patio and walkway. They were wonderful to work with, did exactly what we wanted. The finish product is amazing and the cost was more than fair. My friends and family were in love with the new patio at my son's graduation party!

Sam did an awesome job. He was very quick (3 weeks from first bid to project completion). Best thing was his communication was excellent. It's hard to get someone who communicates well and often and Sam was great. The only knock I'd have is that there were some spots where cleanup wasn't the best (spilled concrete on the lawn in a few places). Overall a great experience and I'd recommend him to anyone. I'd use him again for sure.

I have to say I never expected to find a contractor that was as concerned about the final product as I was. It wasn't just Don, it was the whole crew. Jeramy was my first contact and he was polite, professional, and not only wanted the job but was as concerned about the finished product as I was. For me it was not a small job. My patio was 33' x 16' with three steps. Each person I met had the same concern, and that was to make surer I was satisfied. Don, Jeramy, and Beu Heinberger, as well as Rick Norman were fantastic. If I mentioned something important to me it instantly became important to them. Their price was very competitive. What everyone else wanted to charge for pouring and stamping they were willing to break up, remove, pour and stamp my patio. They were able to perform the work required in about a week and a half. I found that to be reasonable since it was most hand work. They have a small portion of my steps that need to be reworked but Jeramy said to call him and they would be out to repair the issue to my satisfaction. I believe what Jeramy says is as good as gold. In between sections they even made sure anything that could injure my dog when going outside was covered up. I would recommend Double D Concrete for any job small to large because they treat their customers as if all jobs are large ones. Thanks to each one of you for a fantastic job. You will hear from me again when I get ready to do the front porch as mentioned.

Mike did a great job on a new tile floor for the main level of our home. He also added a new fireplace surround and mounted a TV over the fireplace. Every aspect of the job was done well from the demolition to the install to becoming new best friends with our two dogs! We are so pleased with the results and work that we are planing an additional project with them right now to upgrade our outside deck and patio.

Cleared, leveled and compacted are to support a 30 X 16 foot patio. He also hauled away a bunch of debris left from the dismantling of an old rotten redwood deck. Very personable and did an excellent job. The price was right and they were very quick to respond. Excellent clean up.

Phil and his sons were my contact for this job and I couldn't be more happy. They went above and beyond to make sure it was all perfect. Started early Tuesday morning and out late on Friday. Demo'd my front walkway and back patio, leveled and relaid a new pad with rebar anchors. Then did a texture stamp. Looks beautiful

We loved Pebble Creek Design! They are the best in the Salt Lake area. We had a large back yard area but the prior owners had left it practically unusable. I told Pebble Creek that I wanted a basketball court and a flat grassy area for the kids to play soccer but I left all of the design and landscaping up to them. The design and implementation were awesome. We got a basketball court and a soccer area, but also an in-ground trampoline, a swingset area, a custom stone patio, a fire-pit area and a sledding hill for winter. All of these items are perfectly situated on multiple tiers in our back yard among rock retaining walls and planting areas. To top it all off, the entire project came in on-time and on-budget. Our back yard is now the place where all of the cousins and neighborhood kids come to play.

Jason was on time and very willing to get the work done fast. He came to just provide an Lawm service, and explained how he was also a handy man as well. He was able to pour a concrete pad and install my patio tile. Overall I give him 5 stars. Really satisfied.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do construction project managers do?

Construction project managers help in all stages of your construction project, starting from the very first step. Typically paid a percentage of a total project cost, they are part of the design and planning process and help ensure seamless communication between the design parties and the construction team. According to the U.S. Department of Labor, their scope of work includes preparing cost estimates, budgets and work timetables; interpreting and explaining contracts and technical information to other professionals; reporting work progress and budget to clients; collaborating with architects, engineers and other construction pros; selecting subcontractors and scheduling and coordinating their tasks; responding to work delays, emergencies and other problems; and ensuring compliance with legal requirements, building and safety codes, and other regulations.

The work of construction project managers may seem very similar to that of general contractors, but there are some critical differences. One difference is that, unlike most general contractors, project managers are not engaged in the actual construction — they are onsite overseeing the work of subcontractors. Another key difference is that project managers are hired during the design phase, while general contractors are hired after plans have been made. The project manager is generally paid a percentage of the total project cost, while the general contractor is more typically paid according to the bid they gave to build your project.

How do I find out if a contractor is licensed?

It’s important to know if your project requires work by a licensed professional, as licensing laws can vary by state, locality, and job details. You can find general licensing information online at the government websites that handle occupational licensing for a given profession in your state or location. Some states designate a project cost over which you have to hire a licensed contractor. To find qualified licensed contractors, search your state’s licensing board. For example, in California, the Department of Consumer Affairs operates a searchable database through the Contractors State License Board. In some states, contracting licenses are provided at a regional level. You can find links to specific databases on BRB Publications’ Occupational Licensing page. Red flags that a contractor may not be licensed or may be providing an expired or false license number are unreasonably low bids or a request for complete payment upfront. How much does a project manager charge per hour?

You may choose to hire a construction project manager for your residential or commercial project. For the hands-on homeowner who wants to be involved in home construction but isn’t comfortable hiring subcontractors, a construction project manager can oversee these relationships and supervise labor. Typically, construction project managers charge a fee that is a flat percentage of the total construction project cost. This may range from 10 percent to 15 percent, depending on the company and the services they provide. This means a $30,000 home remodel project would have a construction project management fee of $3,000-$4,500. Hiring a construction project manager generally precludes the markup on subcontractor labor charged by a general contractor. The drawback to this choice is that, unlike a general contractor, the construction project manager won’t be financially responsible for the work of the subcontractors. For larger projects, you may hire a construction project manager who will also hire a general contractor. This provides the benefits of the general contractor along with the management services of the project manager, who will be on board from the beginning. The construction project manager will be involved in the design phase and work with the architects and the building crew, facilitating a smoother overall process.

What is a contractor license number?

A contractor license number is proof that your contractor is operating their business legally, that they have the proper documentation required by your state or region, and that they are competent in their area of work (electrical, plumbing, construction, etc.). Licensed contractors should freely advertise their contractor license number. If not, you can request it before considering them for hire. You can also research your contractor using their license number. The database for your state will indicate the field they are licensed to work in; whether they are up to date on insurance, workers’ compensation and bonds; and whether they have any consumer complaints issued against them. If the licensed contractor you are hiring does not have employees, they are not required to carry workers’ compensation. Each state or region will have their own database for licenses, such as the State of Oregon Construction Contractors Board. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.
