My husband convinced me to sell our home in Fairfax and move to Arlington since it was closer to our work and would provide more space after our second child was born. Reluctantly, I agreed to move into this new home that needed a little bit of work done in order to make it habitable. After months of renovations, and having moved almost all of our possessions into storage, and then back out to the new home, we realized what a toll had been taken on our wallet and our belongings. Much of our stuff was ruined from the move, having been snagged and torn against door jams and from the load and unload. What furniture was left didnt seem to fit right in the home. Although the house was sound, the kitchen needed a serious upgrade and the colors of the new house were drab in comparison to the aesthetics from our old home. I told my husband that since I agreed to move out of the house I had worked so hard to make perfect, he was going to let me try to do the same with this one. After doing some research and having everyone refer me to this company, I called Modern Washingtonian Interiors, and the next day Kris showed up to look at the house and offer some ideas. Even though I wanted to gut the kitchen and start from scratch, Kris showed me that since the cabinets were of high quality, all she had to do was sand them down and add a modern finish to them to make them look brand new. She looked at the furniture and showed me that I didnt need to spend all my money replacing the furniture, but just rearrange it to fit the oddly shaped living room. She laid out a design to simply revamp what was already in the house, showed us some colors to choose from, and came up with some very creative, eclectic ideas to make the house fun and beautiful for both the kids and the adults. I was so excited to see the house become something I never thought it could be. Kris fixed up the place under budget and in less time than she promised! I dont even miss our old house anymore, because what seemed like the worst decision of my life (buying this house), has now made my life, my husbands life, and my kids lives exponentially better than what it was before! What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?
Nope, we have a simple pricing generally. We design a project amount and put all inclusions in, and make a list of possible uh-oh items (like re-routing plumbing, etc). Or, we do hourly design time. It's that simple.
What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Absolutely, all the time. Not only do we all have our noses in books and magazines when we're not working, we attend most of the major trade shows like NeoCon and High Point!
How did you get started doing this type of work?
For me, my father was a general residential contractor and amazing home builder, My uncle was a commercial contractor and had a large portion of the Dulles Airport expansion. My mother was an artist. I was born to do this and it wasn't really a choice.
