Introduction: I offer personalized attention, and am constantly updating my approach with my students based on their written and verbal work, performance, interests, and verbal/nonverbal feedback. I tutor many students whose requirements fall within the typical range of academic and test prep needs, but I also specialize in working with students with specific needs. Some examples are students who are far behind in school and need to catch up due to illness or trauma, those with learning disabilities, those on the autism spectrum, those with ADD or ADHD, and/or those who are gifted. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, as of mid-March 2020, I am switching all of my instruction and tutoring to an online classroom that resides on a robust platform developed and administered by educators. This includes face-to-face interactions via a web camera (or only via audio, if the student/parent prefers), integrated screen share, and the ability for the student and instructor to quickly/efficient upload and "write on" image files and .pdf files. I can therefore tutor students residing anywhere. For those residing in the DC Metro area, an initial "face-to-face" meeting with the students and parents at an outdoor venue (to maintain social distancing) might be nice as an icebreaker, but it is not necessary. My rate for one-on-one online tutoring is $50/hr for subject/course tutoring, and $60/hr for test prep (ACT, SAT, GRE, GMAT, TJ, SSAT, PSAT, AOS, AET). I will also be forming small group ACT and SAT classes (and perhaps others) for which there will be a set fee for a certain number of hours, but for which the overall rate will be less per person than the hourly rate. I have taught and tutored for over 18 years, and currently engage in curriculum development, editing academic materials, tutoring, and occasional adjunct teaching in the Washington, DC metro area. I work with students to help them develop: - a greater understanding of (and, often, a greater appreciation for) the subject matter at hand - a successful approach to learning in and out of the classroom, including organizational and study skills - mathematical and scientific reasoning and problem-solving skills; both technical and holistic approaches to language My background includes a master's degree in mathematics; extensive and successful teaching experience at elementary, middle school, high school, and college levels; recent math/science coursework that underscores my appreciation of lifelong learning; and a background in information technology and professional writing. I have scored in the 96th-99th percentile on standardized tests (usually the 98th or 99th percentile). Current and past references are available. Many clients with whom I have built a relationship ask me to return to tutor their child's siblings, and/or refer me to friends and colleagues. I tutor the following subjects: - pre-calculus (including IB math) - calculus (including IB and AP levels) - statistics I and II (college and high school, including IB levels) - SAT I and II, GRE, GMAT, PSAT, ISEE, SSAT, PRAXIS, TJ, and SOL Exams - linear algebra (undergraduate) - discrete math - differential equations (undergraduate) - math and science CLEP exams - elementary and middle school math - English at all levels (grammar, writing composition, editing, etc.) - Reading comprehension - pre-algebra - algebra I and II - geometry - general chemistry (including IB and AP levels) and organic chemistry I - physics (general college-prep, honors, and introductory college levels) - oceanography (high school and introductory college levels) - biology - high school history, economics, civics My rate is $50-$60/hr at my home in the Pimmit Hills area of Falls Church (depending on whether the tutoring is subject-related or test prep). For other areas, I charge $60-$100 for the first hour per session, depending on distance and commute time/traffic, and $60 for each additional hour per session, prorated for partial hours. Aside from tutoring and instruction, I write curriculum materials for various publishing companies and organizations, including textbook chapters and test/assessment items for state and national examinations. I am therefore very knowledgeable about the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), the Virginia Standards of Learning (SOLs), the Maryland state standards, and the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). I have written/edited materials for the PARC and SBAC exams, as well as for several state tests, and have experience writing and editing material for major publishers of practice content for the PRAXIS, SAT, GRE, and GMAT exams. I work with school-age students, college students, home-schooled students, and working adults. I can meet in Falls Church/Pimmit Hills or within a 20-35 minute drive of my home. I love when a student who was frustrated with a subject or topic leaves with a smile on his or her face and indicates that he/she has learned something. Even better is when someone goes from disliking a topic (such as math) to wanting to study more of it in the future!

My daughter was struggling with some math concepts in her high school Algebra course, and Kendra (Acumen Tutoring) was instrumental in helping my daughter gain a better grasp of the concepts. My daughter stated to Kendra, "You make math so easy to understand." In addition, Kendra helped me put together some resumes and cover letters, giving advice or editing as needed. She worked with me every step of the way to make sure that I was effectively stating what I wanted to say about my experience and skills. Her assistance was invaluable in landing me a couple of positions. Thanks for all of your help!

Kendra is extremely reliable and responsive. She has tutored my two sons - one in Trig (he got an A, thanks to her help) and one in Hon. Algebra II/Trig (he is getting an A, thanks to her help). My boys say she makes things very clear and understandable. She has really come through for me in a few binds - even once coming at 615am in the morning to tutor! Can't say enough good things about her. She really does work miracles in the math department. Plus, she is just a super nice and hardworking person.

Kendra was my personal tutor to help me prepare for the GMAT exam. She is brilliant at simplifying concepts, particularly math, and making them accessible for anyone to understand and recreate. She bridges gaps between, what I find, esoteric and abstract math concepts that are difficult to conceptualize into simple, real-world problems that can be easily solved. Could not recommend her enough!
