Eugene and his crew were great. They renovated a portion of my retail space in just a couple weeks. Eugene was a great communicator and made sure to contact me with any questions, and always called or sent a picture on days when I wasn't around. He is free with his advice and was helpful in navigating a few snags, always with an eye to keeping costs down. Even one of our inspectors complimented him. I highly recommend RDRI for whatever renovations you need.

Chun-Fa is a talented architect with exceptional professionalism, a wonderful sense of design concepts and a strong work ethic. He is passionate about his work and pays close attention to the customer’s needs. As the architect for the M&T Bank Stadium concourse renovation project recently completed in 2014, his dedication toward design and construction details contributed tremendously to the on-budget and timely project delivery. I highly recommend him to the client who is looking for an architect with design vision and passion.

We are extremely happy with our decision to hire Alridge Design Services. Jarvis was hired to take measurements of our home and create a 2D CAD drawing to share with our contractor. He was an affordable, professional alternative to an architect and brought his design expertise to the project. He was friendly, helpful, and I would highly recommend using his firm.

Donald Coles who runs Dharma Graphics has been a great client of mine where I have provided structural engineering expertise to the many buildings Don has designed as an architect throughout Philadelphia. He has connections with the AIA Philadelphia Chapter, he is thorough with the building codes (non structural vs structural), I don't get very many jobs/projects from him each year, but I still value him for his ability to converse well with me between; respectively, architect and structural engineer.

My Interior Design firm has often required the services of an architect to accomplish our client’s goals. Stephen Dunakoskie became our go to firm several years ago because of the quality and professionalism he contributed to our projects. He is honest and dependable, detailed and thorough, creative and talented. He always goes the extra mile to perform in the best interest of our clients. I would highly recommend him for any size projects you may be ready to successfully achieve.

Not only did Gary come and work on our project with less than 24 hr notice, he was extremely responsive and located conveniently in the District. Gary did a fantastic job installing our new chandelier and offered his expertise on placement and height. He was friendly, professional, and clearly passionate about his work. I also really appreciated the fact that not only was he a handyman but also is a certified architect and design professional...always nice to work with someone who's not only handy but has an eye for style. His price for the project was much more reasonable than the other quotes I received. I will absolutely be calling him again for future projects around the house.

Design Research is a premier design/architect firm. Among other projects they completed for our 1927 house, they designed and supervised the building of a new ground floor bathroom, carving it out of an entrance closet, and an additional upstairs bedroom closet. Both were in difficult locations. Design Research was affordable, insistent on high quality and workmanship, committed to innovative design solutions to difficult problems, professional in every respect, considerate of our time and budget constraints. Run by an architectural historian and architect, the firm is very respectful of vintage homes such as ours. Although these were not large additions, they have nevertheless become show-pieces of our home.

We could not have asked for a better architect than Berny Hintz. He listened to what we were looking for in our dream home and how we lived before he even started designing it. When he showed us his design, we were blown away. Berny was our liaison with our builder, assisted with permitting and worked with us through out the entire process from start to finish. We love our house and highly recommend Berny Hintz AIA.

Jeff did a great job converting our dated, 850 sq ft 1949 bungalow into a modern, 1300 sq ft open floorplan with tons of natural light, plus turning a small bedroom into a large master suite with a huge walk-in closet (my favorite!). We're grateful everyday that he convinced us to add a second full bath, rather than just enlarging the only existing bath. There was some friction between architect and contractor, but we suppose that's to be expected on a *major* reno like ours. These photos are before & afters - it's hard to believe they are the same views of the same house! Thanks, Jeff

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

      How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
