Rick did a fine job installing a ceiling fan that was not easy to get in place. He and his assistant, Maddie, (shown in the photo) are a great team! I plan to call on him again for other electrical and plumbing work.

Transitions Flooring was fantastic to deal with. After talking with the big box Store and discovering that their installers couldn't handle subflooring issues, I gave Lisa a call. She was very flexible and met me right away to review the potential job. We added ceramic tile to our master bath floor and also removed plastic border around the garden tub and replaced it with ceramic tile. I am not much of a designer and LIsa and her crew were of great help in picking out tile and coming up with how to lay it. It was a turn-key job for a reasonable price. Lisa's crew also jumped in to help the big box store that was installing the carpet. We had subflooring issues with carpet and the crew would handle the subflooring right before the carpet was installed. I wish I had met Lisa before I had the other store install the carpet, because her team was able to fix the flooring from ground up. The crew was very respectful and cleaned up. The job is professional and done very quickly. The tile looks great on the floor. The tile I had picked for surrounding the garden tub, when we looked at it a second time, the installer recommended a different pattern. I went and got that and it worked out great. I appreciate the good advice. Lisa was able to work within our time frame. She communiated the entire time and even saved materials, we could return to the Store for a credit. I would not hesitate to call this company again. They do things right and guarantee their work.

Needed to have a brick walkway installed in the back of my home to connect my basement entrance to my driveway. Paul was prompt and professional with scheduling and communication. This was during the 30 days of rain. Paul was excellent in keeping in touch and making sure I was aware he was monitoring the weather and would get to my path as soon as the ground was dry. True to his word the very day the ground had tried he had his crew on site to install my walkway. He installed exactly what I was looking for at a competitive price. I will definitely use Paul again for my landscaping and hardscaping needs.

A+ job! I am a picky client and I am 100% happy with results. A&G1stop recently completed a huge pressure wash, paint, and stain job on the exterior of our new home. High quality work and undercut cost of all competitors! The home looks fantastic and the whole crew was an absolute pleasure to deal with - professional, prompt, and respectful. Highly recommend for any project - we'll certainly hire again.

Penn did more jobs than I can list here; sheetrock, front door replacement/upgrade, siding/trim repairs, chair rail install, baseboard upgrade, painting, lighting upgrade, deck upgrade, vintage furniture repair, reroute coaxial cables, install outlets, etc... The costs were so reasonable, I kept finding (and still am) projects to do. Penn and helpers worked within my scheduling parameters and worked well with the HOA painters which saved a lot of time and money.

I'm incredibly fortunate to have found Jimmy. He has an incredibly wide range of skills and has been a 1 stop shop for all my projects. He has done carpentry, skilled painting, tree trimming, HVAC, plumbing, and electrical. He's always honest if he doesn't feel like something is in his wheelhouse. If he says he can do something, he'll do it extremely well. His prices are fantastic -- most guys with his skill set charge significantly more than he does. Since I've found him, I've been able to do the critical jobs as well as some jobs that I've been putting off for years. Moreover, he's a decent, caring family man who I trust around my young son and am comfortably leaving a key for him when I'm not at home. Very strongly recommended.

We hired Justin and his company to come out an install a fence for us. Their pricing was reasonable considering the intricate design my wife wanted. We had his company install a custom fence with vinyl posts and wood paneling. It looks absolutely wonderful. Nothing is perfect and he addressed every concern we had. We have never given a 5 star review but this individual earned everyone. Well done Justin and D&H!

Southern Tile Inc. (Joshua) did a great job. We had a water leak and needed immediate flooring done. Joshua not only came very early in the morning for us to work around our schedules, but he was on time for the tile installation and the following day for grout installation. He is very friendly and nice and will help in any way possible to complete your project. His expertise is not only in tile, so if you have any other needs, be sure to inform him of those so that he can be of assistance in completing your entire to-do list!

I hired Chaplain Renovations to do my kitchen backsplash. The whole experience from start to finish was so pleasant. Eddy, knowing that this was my first home remodeling project helped me pick out the right tiles for my kitchen, and spent time showing me only tiles that were in my price range. He was so meticulous in his work, paying attention to every detail. Overall,Eddy's tile work was absolutely fantastic! I would highly recommend using them.

Slavik and his associate were a pleasure to work with! They are professional, friendly, accommodating to our schedule, and they do a great job with their tile installation. Very precise, clean installation. They did our kitchen backsplash with glass tile 3x6 in a standard brick bond pattern. We are extremely happy with the results! Highly recommend them!

Mike has worked on many jobs for me and is extremely helpful and conscientious. His advice has served me well in planning, budgeting and execution of various projects, from deck building to tree cutting and removal. He priced, designed, and replaced an 8x18 foot deck in four days after boards were found to be failing!! Saved me $100s on tree removals, and also on other house and yard projects, including advice on electrical and plumbing work.

Painting & Light Carpentry has done more than one job for me. When I was pregnant they extended my nursery out, installed a window, replaced wood paneling with dry wall, installed baseboard heating, mounted an airconditioner painted the room, and laid carpet. Very professional, very clean, EXCELLENT PRICES, and very friendly. I will count on Painting & Light Carpentry for all my future projects.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to tile a shower?

The cost of tiling a shower depends on two main factors: the size of the shower and the quality of the tiles. In general, most professional tilers charge an average of $25 per square foot of tiled area and the national average cost for a tile installation project is $490-$750. The tiles themselves are the greatest variable; the cost depends on their size, shape, pattern and manufacturer. For example, tile purchased at a volume discount from a big-box store cost far less than tiles made in small batches by an artisan ceramics shop. Prices can range from as little as $1 to $50 or more per square foot of tile. Other factors that will drive up the total tile installation cost are grout and mortar, speciality tiles like bullnose caps or soap holders, and surface prep materials, especially if drywall needs to be replaced before the tile can be installed. Many tile installers will also remove and haul away any old materials from an existing shower installation.

How much does it cost to tile a bathroom?

Tile installation costs are a key part of your bathroom remodel costs. The tile you select (which can range from under $2 per square foot to $50 per square foot or more), the demolition and repair work required prior to installation, and the size of the job will all affect cost. You can install tile in the shower, on the counters, on the wall or on the floor. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Bathroom tile is easy to clean and durable for daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom tile installation costs:

      • Tile installation at $25 per square foot of tiled bathroom area.
        • A standard tub and shower combo requires tiles for approximately 60 inches of length. Calculate wall height and add 30 to 36 inches of tub width for the walls at the head and foot of the tub. If the tile walls are 6 feet to 8 feet high, in this example, the tile installation costs would run about $2,000. Price includes materials.
      • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with an 8-foot ceiling: $1,450. Price includes materials.
      • Tile installation on a 3-foot by 5-foot regular tub and shower walls with a 10-foot ceiling: $1,650. Price includes materials.

How much does it cost to install a ceramic tile floor?

Tile installation costs for ceramic floors depend on the type of tile you select. You can purchase tile that sells for under $2 per square foot or tile that costs $50 per square foot — or more for artisanal and hand-painted tiles. The cost of labor to install a tile floor will also depend on the tile you select. It is far less labor-intensive to install a white 12-inch by 12-inch square tile than a 2-inch by 2-inch hexagonal tile with a distinct pattern. That extra time and energy equates to a higher per-square-foot installation cost. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for labor to install wood-look tile in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet. That same pro may charge $6 or more per square foot for a more intricate pattern, or a smaller space. Some installers may charge a minimum day rate for ceramic tile floor installation, such as $340 minimum per day, to cover business expenses and employee wages. If you’re looking to reduce costs, removing your existing flooring and handling any repairs needed can help eliminate prep work costs. Prep work may be charged per hour and could cost anywhere from $25 to $80 per hour or more, depending on the region and the type of repair work necessary.

How much does it cost to get tiling done?

You can install tiling on your floors, walls, counters, kitchen backsplash, outdoor patio and shower — to name a few places. Tile is beautiful, easy to clean, durable, and resilient against kids and pets. The national average for tile installation cost ranges between $490 and $750. Often, tile installation specialists quote a price per square foot for installation. Costs can increase if you want the pro to supply the tile instead of ordering it yourself. Other factors that can increase cost include specialized installation with a unique design that will require more labor to install.

Prep work will also affect tile installation costs. Demolition of the existing floor, counter or backsplash takes time and energy that will be reflected in the price. Necessary repairs, such as a sub-floor that needs bolstering before tile flooring can be installed, will also increase costs. For tile showers, one example of tile installation cost may be approximately $25 per square foot including all materials and labor. Average tile installation costs for backsplashes may run anywhere from $10 to $40, depending on the materials selected and the amount of labor required. The larger the area where tile is being installed, the lower the price per square foot will likely be. For example, a flooring pro may charge approximately $3.50 per square foot for wood-look tile installation in an area ranging between 6 feet by 24 feet and 8 feet by 48 feet.

How much does it cost to install tiles in a kitchen?

One of the most common kitchen upgrades is installing decorative backsplash tiles in the space between the counters and cabinets. It’s a chance for homeowners to get creative while also protecting the kitchen walls from splashes and stains. Like all tiling projects, kitchen tile project costs depend on the tiles you choose, installation materials such as grout and mortar, and any surface materials, like replacement backer board. The national average for a tiled kitchen backsplash is $490-$750. In general, pricing averages $10-$40 per square foot for installation, not including tile. Some professional tile installers have a minimum day rate for small projects, which averages $350.
