Claudia Carawan is simply the best. She is very thorough in her approach and explains both theory and application in a very straight forward manner. She combines technical practice with real life application and works toward developing your own voice to its fullest extent. Very professional. I find there is a nice mix between working on scales and vocal techniques combined with singing and working on actual songs (of my choice!!) makes the lesson go by very smoothly and you walk away with more confidence and more ability. The setting is comfortable, the space is very open for creativity and Claudia is an extremely encouraging type of teacher/coach - she is very positive and continually reinforces in a very positive manner - this is most helpful. She is very experienced and this is obvious in her coaching as she can draw on so many past experiences and has a broad depth of musical references to draw from (e.g. jazz, R&B, rock, soul, country, etc.) - she understands how to draw out the best in your voice and gives a very solid foundation that you can grow from and continually develop from for years to come. The best!!!

Maroon and his piano accompanist Fred were AMAZING; their jazzy music, which included both standards and holiday favorites, was such a hit at our office holiday cocktail party. They were on-time, friendly, well-equipped and self-sufficient, but best of all, they sounded great. Couldn't have asked for better musicians for the event. I highly recommend Maroon and his team for your next event; you won't be disappointed!

Both of my children took lessons from Adella. When one child wanted to learn jazz piano to be able to play with her school jazz ensemble, Adella quickly switched gears and helped make that happen. My other child took voice lessons from Adella for two reasons: 1. to help be a better singer for school ensembles. 2. to prepare for college auditions. My child was accepted into one of the best public university music programs in the country. While this second accomplishment was due in part to the voice quality of my child, Adella is the one who taught her the skills, the repetoire and the process for auditioning. She even accompanied us to the auditions to play for the auditions. Adella became a member of our family. She is gifted, talented and truly understands how the young mind (age 6 - 18) learns and how the young instrument should be properly trained, educated, challenged at all the right levels in order to excel and, most importantly, enjoy music for a lifetime.

Chris is my daughter's flute teacher. She is a professional flute player as well as a nice, patient, supportive, amazing teacher and person. My daughter plays in the middle school band. Chris help boost her confidence in playing the flute and teach her about music. They play many duets which is not only fun but very educational in my daughter's flute development. Chris is very knowledgeable of the audition requirements for music students preparing for more advanced opportunities. My daughter has thoroughly enjoyed lessons and learning with Chris. Chris is also very flexible and friendly. She is challenging, yet fun. Very excited to see how lessons progress! I would definitely recommend her to anybody looking for a flute instructor. Thank you Chris :))

Jordan provided guitar lessons for my son for 2.5 years. My child did not have any previous experience with a guitar or with music in general prior to his lessons. Under Jordan's guidance, my son has not only learned the basics, but he has learned to love music. My child can now play classical, jazz, and rock; he has even performed some Ozzy Osbourne for a talent show in front of over 150 people at school! My son has gained confidence in himself and his musical ability through his lessons. I am so glad that Jordan was able to work with my child!

    About

The Jack Winn-Tet, a four-piece band, consists of alto sax-vocals, drums, piano, and bass. The band's repertoire is extensive, including standard selections from the '30s and '40s, Latin, light rock, and other specials. The Jack Winn-Tet will add to your wedding receptions and special parties, and of course, dances. They've performed for numerous private functions to include: • Anniversary celebrations • Corporate parties • Reunions • Wedding receptions During the past 5 years, the band has played for many engagements for early bar and dining hours at local restaurants in the Richmond area. Jack Winn originally formed the Jack-Winn-Tet in the early '60s; he reformed it after his retirement as a major school system's performing arts supervisor. Upon reflecting back to sounds of old standards and jazz that were famous when he was a college music major, he was motivated by many to bring back that sound for today's audiences. After the effort was made, the musicians were found who captured the mood and beat with finesse to make the band’s music satisfying to the dancer and the listener. The Jack Winn-Tet makes the effort to please the listening and dancing crowd, with music that is never too loud for a conversation. This is the website for the band, Jack Winn-Tet and Jack Winn who is based out of Richmond, Virginia. Information will be noted in detail in this area, so make sure to check back constantly.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

    What is a mariachi band?

Mariachi bands are rooted in Mexican culture. Traditional mariachi bands consisted of two or more members playing stringed instruments, wearing regional costumes adapted from the charro (Mexican horseman or cowboy). Modern mariachi bands, which are likely what you’re looking for when searching for a mariachi band for hire, feature at least four members who play stringed instruments (violin, vihuela, bass guitar called guitarron) and one or more trumpets. The costumes have remained the same, but now trumpets are synonymous with mariachi music. Mariachi bands for hire often play a wide range of music, including styles originating from Mexico and adopted from elsewhere. These include jarabes, waltzes, serenades, corridos (Mexican ballads), ranchera, cumbia, and more. Mariachi bands for hire bring a festive and soulful element to a party, birthday, wedding, corporate affair, fundraiser or community event. UNESCO has inscribed mariachi music on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

How many mariachis can a band have?

A mariachi band for hire can have as many players as you like. Modern mariachi bands typically have a minimum of four players with the trumpet playing a vital musical role along with stringed instruments such as the violin, guitarrón (a Mexican bass guitar with a deep body), vihuela (a Spanish stringed guitar) and guitar. Strong vocals are also an important component of mariachi bands for hire, since one or more of the players will be singing during the performance. For a truly spectacular show, you can hire a mariachi band with 15 or more players. The medley of stringed instruments, multiple trumpets, soaring vocals, and even an accordion or harp is powerful and beautiful. Mariachis typically wear the traditional costume of charros — Mexican horsemen. The look is a very regal, monotone suit, often in black or white, with silver adornments and embroidery. Mariachi bands often wear sombreros as well. Traditional mariachi bands were only made up of two or more players, according to a UNESCO report celebrating the cultural heritage of the musical style. The style of music originated in the state of Jalisco. Now the style of music is symbolic of Mexico but is celebrated all over the world, and adds a fabulous vibrancy to any group’s events, parties and weddings.

How much does a mariachi band cost?

A mariachi band will bring your party or event alive with their fabulous costumes, beautiful playing and strong vocals. The cost of a mariachi band for hire will depend on how many players are in the group. Each musician in a performance group needs to be paid, so pricing is usually based on the number of mariachis (musicians), the location of the event (and travel time required), and the length of the performance. Day of the week also affects cost, as does day — Christmas, New Year’s Eve and other major holidays will cost more than regular days. The national average cost for live bands of all types ranges between $740 and $1,200. Depending on where you live and regional rates for performers, you might expect to pay between $65 and $120 per hour, per player. Mariachi groups may have 12-15 players available for performance at one time, depending on your budget. Here are some examples of how the number of players affects average cost:

    • Four mariachis: $300 per hour for weeknights, $400 per hour for weekends.
    • Five mariachis: $350 per hour for weeknights, $400-$450 per hour for weekends. Weekends may have a minimum number of hours.
    • Six mariachis: $400 per hour for weeknights, $450-$500 per hour for weekends.
