We needed a new water heater, Nick had a great quote, followed up with a quick and courteous phone call and he got the bid. He was incredibly quick and efficient, left the area spotless and was kind, helpful and friendly. He is all about saving the customer money and offered advice about issues I could deal with without having to call a plumber. That was amazing! We will recommend Nick to anyone who needs plumbing work done.

Identified issues and shared knowledge for mitigation. Need a new water heater based on feedback and showed how to read the water heater. Also, fixed a pipe issue in my utility closet that was leaking.

I needed a new water heater (fast!) and was considering going tankless. The people at 24/7 took all the time I needed to go over my options and help me figure out what the best choice for my home was. I ended up going with a highly rated and efficient tank system since the water in my area is quite hard so the added cost of installing a water softener to keep a tankless system running well throughout its intended lifespan pushed that option over my desired budget. The two man team that came to my house were quick and clean! It took less than 4 hours from the time they arrived to my hot water being back on (and I'm including the time it took for the tank to heat up after they installed it). Everything they moved was put back carefully (and correctly!) and the area looks cleaner than when they arrived. They installed, tested, and checked their work. They also attended to little details, like making sure to rinse out any grit and grime from aerators in sink faucets after we turned the water back on and flushed the lines. Great job overall. Would definitely hire them again.

Hi all, I'm sharing a long review so others know what to expect when they need the same type of service for the first time. The 50-gallon electric water heater in my condo was leaking and needed to be replaced. Walter coordinated same day service while I went to Home Depot to purchase a new water heater and water heater pan. After sending him the order number and Home Depot location, his team picked up the water heater on their way to my condo. David and Melvin arrived as scheduled and were very friendly and professional. The first thing they did was protect the work area with large floor cloths. They explained the installation process step-by-step. Their skill combined with the latest tools in the trade resulted in a very efficient operation and took around 1.5 hours to complete. I paid via credit card and it was processed onsite using their mobile credit card reader. It is now two weeks post installation and I have no problems to report. Out of all the Thumbtack quotes I received, their quote was the highest by a significant percentage, but I still chose Eagle Home because their service comes with a 1-year warranty. I reasoned that they must do quality work if they automatically back it up for a minimum of a year. Other factors in my selection included the high number of positive reviews (that were plumbing specific) and Walter's responsiveness. My only gripe with the service was that the already high quote did not include haul away of the old water heater. Haul away was an additional charge. This was a lessons learned for me to make sure quotes for similar projects in the future include the cost of installation and disposal. I give Eagle Home 5 stars for service and 3.5 stars for cost.

Martin Ramos promptly responded to me regarding my initial request for help with my leaking water heater located in Montgomery County, MD. He took a little over two hours to fix the leak and install a new kitchen faucet. He unexpectedly got the second job of installing the new kitchen faucet as I was impressed by his straightforward and no-nonsense manner of showing me essential options available to resolve my plumbing needs. Despite being on a very tight schedule, he was willing to fix my leaking water heater on the next day, a Saturday, beginning at 7:30 am, per my request, arriving on time. I certainly appreciated his timely response, as the leaking problem was accelerating from bad to worse, thereby showing his empathy and acceptance of a customer’s emergency needs, as well as his cleaning up of the areas where he had done his jobs. So far, his two works are fine and have not incurred any issue or problem. Thumbtack indicated that up to five professional plumbers would respond to my call for services. Eventually, I received only two: one was Martin Ramos whereas the other made no indication of being a licensed plumber. A larger number of responses would perhaps provide a larger pool of choices for us customers. As for Martin Ramos, I could be so carried away by his customer-centered approach of doing his business that I failed to see any serious shortcomings of his. Seemingly, nothing went wrong as I was not watching over his shoulders while he was doing his work. Perhaps he could do better if he would be willing to offer his returning customers a goodwill deal that will even be better than his current fees, which are already reasonable given his ample years of professional experiences and commendable services. Thanks to Thumbtack and Martin Ramos, I now can enjoy my water heater and new kitchen faucet sooner rather than later. I’ll return to Thumbtack in the future for help with other service needs and recommend Thumbtack to others.

I spoke to Jon about my pilot light on my water heater that kept going out. Since I dicovered the water heater should not be in a bathroom ( which voided my warranty), he explained why and since it is in a small closet suggested I leave the door open for the air to circulate! This light was going out everyday for the last 3 days. Following Jon's advice the pilot light has stayed lit! I didn't hire him for now, but will definitely contact him for jobs in the future! Thank you so much for your advice Jon, and saving me money!

Working with Salvation LLC was a wonderful experience. Ernesto and his team are outstanding. In fact, Ernesto found a creative solution to my HVAC/water heater issue that several other HVAC companies had not even considered. The finished installation was beyond my expectations; pre-installation preparation and post-installation cleanup could not have been better. I have had HVAC/water heater work done in the past but Salvation's work was superior to all of these other companies. The work was done at a reasonable price in a timely manner and Ernesto made sure that I understood all that would be involved in the installation. I highly recommend Salvation! I have already scheduled some additional HVAC work with Salvation and they will absolutely be my go-to HVAC company going forward :-)

Brian came in to replace the HVAC unit for a 1-bedroom condo, and had a colleague also replace the hot water heater. Overall, Brian was very responsive, came in and provided a very estimate and quote, and got the work done very quickly. The timeline for the project stretched out a little bit, but some of that was due to the requirements for the building exterior. Overall, excellent service and value, and took the time to make sure the job was done well.

I sent my request through TT about 7:30 a.m. Michael was at my house by 9:30 a.m. Within a half hour, my water heater was running properly. I tried desperately to fix my water heater on my own, but realized it was time to call a professional. I was so happy he responded with so quickly to my request. I have been busy all week and couldn't get around to hiring someone. I am keeping his business card because he's very professional and knowledgeable. Michael owns a small company and gives personal service. Don't hesitate to call. Great company.

Norlan was great, was the quickest and best quote, he advised on his labor separate from the water heater of my choice. He picked up for me and just added to the total. He also pointed out damage to the new water heater from Home Depot and offered to exchange it on the spot which I was thankful for. Did not take the old tank but we did not discuss this before and I had to go to dump anyway. I will use Norlan again and have retained his contact info for future work. By the way, the install seems to be fine and working perfectly.

Mr. Jones and his crew did an excellent job with the installation of my water heater, even though it was commercial sized and was a tight fit. It arrived damaged from the retailer but he was able to determine that the damage was cosmetic and therefore would not affect the performance of my heater. The retailer then gave me half off of the heater for not sending it back! Win-Win situation.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

When is it time to replace a water heater?

Although regular water heater maintenance and water heater repair may extend the life of your hot water heater, it won’t last forever. Most water heaters have a life expectancy of about 10 years. Many water heaters need to be replaced when they’re 8-12 years old — that’s when they start to show signs of fatal wear, such as leaking around the base of the tank. A water heater should be replaced when it fails to sufficiently heat water for the home; if your heater is operating erratically, check first for a blown fuse or a tripped breaker to make sure an electrical issue isn’t causing the problem. Another time to replace a water heater is when you want to upgrade to either a larger model or a more energy-efficient one.

Why is my hot water not working?

The most common complaint among homeowners is that their hot water isn’t working — and the water heater is generally the culprit. Typically, it isn’t making the water as hot as you’d like it to be. When the water isn’t hot enough — or isn’t hot at all — run through this troubleshooting checklist for basic water heater repair tasks:

  • Make sure the power is connected to the heater, then reset the thermostat.
  • If it’s a gas water heater, make sure the pilot light is lit.
  • Raise the temperature setting on the thermostat.

If these stops don’t lead to hot water, it’s time to either check the heating element in an electric water heater or the burner unit and gas control valve in a gas-powered heater. A water heater repair and maintenance company can handle these repair jobs. However, if your hot water heater is eight years or older, it may be time to replace the water heater instead of repairing it.

Who can fix a water heater?

When a water heater stops running effectively, it’s best to hire a water heater repair professional to troubleshoot the problem. Whether it’s a plumbing company that offers water heater repair services or a provider specializing in water heater repair and maintenance, most repair companies offer same-day service as well as weekend and after-hours emergency calls. Usually, water heater repair professionals are experts in both electric and gas systems, as well as tank and tankless heaters, and can repair any kind of unit.

How much do new water heaters cost?

The cost of a new water heater depends largely on the type and size of the heater. The average national cost for a new water heater installation including a 40- to 50-gallon tank is $350-$780. Most homes don’t need larger tanks, but they are available — for a price. The average difference between a 50-gallon tank and a 75-gallon tank (the next most common size) ranges from $400 to $600. Hundred-gallon tanks are also available, and they can cost double or triple the price of a 50-gallon tank from the same manufacturer. New water heaters tend to be far more energy-efficient, so they can cut energy costs; homeowners may also be eligible for a new water heater rebate from their local utility company.

Typically, tankless water heaters, which heat water only when you need it, cost more but can save about 25 percent of annual water heating costs, on average. They also lose only 5 percent of their energy compared with a tank unit’s 30 percent energy loss. Note, too, that a water heater with a tank has a life expectancy of 10 years, while tankless units generally last about twice as long.

The final expense to consider is a possible disposal fee to get rid of the old water heater; some companies include it in the price, while others charge an average of $35-$150.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
