    Barbara Ryan

    (17 reviews)

I trained classically for 10 years with high powered teachers that included Metropolitan Opera singers and students of the late, great Todd Duncan. None of them prepared me for singing day after day, week after week in difficult acoustic environments, and I strained my voice, necessitating a long, silent recovery time. Once I started recording, I learned a great deal about what goes on in the vocal instrument and sat down to completely restructure my approach to singing. The result is my teaching method: an ergonomic understanding of the instrument, with an emphasis on using the body's natural acoustics in conjunction with breathing techniques, relaxation and overall fitness. I'm also a mother and grandmother and have learned how best to draw out my students' strengths and interests. My students!!! We always become friends because a successful teacher takes the time to learn so much about every one.

    Nocturne Voice Studio

    (4 reviews)

I believe that I am a very good communicator. Singing can be a tricky thing to teach because we seek to control parts of us that we typically consider to be involuntary: the diaphragm, the soft palate, the vocal folds, etc. Effectively training the voice requires not only a good working knowledge of the anatomy involved, but a firm grasp of how to direct the voice using imagery both literal and analogous. Though I have some natural ability, I had to fight hard for most of my technique. I feel like this gives me a more in depth understanding of the voice, how to develop it piece by piece and then integrate them. It also gives me a lot of empathy in the struggles that can arise for students, helping me to be sensitive in creating a safe place to make mistakes and try new things. Not only am I obsessed with all things vocal technique, I also really love the collaborative process of teaching. Seeing my students improve and reach their goals is a hugely gratifying process. It's kind of cheesy, but I feel like helping people to connect to themselves and the people around them with their voices makes the world a better place.

For TENNIS volume of students I teach per week during the peak of summer in classes and small groups is 80 - 100. In BALLROOM DANCING student evaluations of past classes have praise our instruction skills. Class size has grown consistently from 8 originally to over 20. In PIANO I can incorporate simple composing technique (if desired) into the lesson structure to enhance learning in a creative way. Sharing knowledge with enthusiastic students, guiding them and seeing them develop new skils and enjoyment.

Gain The Advantage! I serve the Northern Virginia area. I have over 25 years of experience as a certified instructor and coach. Lessons are conducted at the court of your choice, near where you live or work. Lesson rates are as follows: Private (1): $50 per hour; Semi-Private (2): $27 each per hour; Group (3): $20 each per hour; and Group (4): $17 each per hour. I provide clear and effective instruction to children, teens, and adults at all levels of play. No package deals or other gimmicks are pitched to lure you to take lessons. You are never obligated to take more than one lesson at a time, and I am more than happy to provide references. With the arrival of summer, this is a great time of year to jump start your game or take up tennis for the first time. In addition to being able to set my own hours, I enjoy being able to work outdoors throughout the year. I thoroughly enjoy sharing what I know about tennis to those who are eager to learn. Although I've been teaching tennis for a long time, I still get a thrill out of watching a student learn a new stroke, spin, or strategy to improve their game. Over the years, I've met people from all walks of life, and those experiences have made a positive impact on me both as a teacher and as a person. I look forward to many more years in the teaching profession.

  • Nicole Lamm Vocal Studio LLC

    (14 reviews)

A lot of teachers have the proper knowledge of good vocal technique but lack the skills to relay this information to their students in a way that reaches them. I tailor my teaching methods to the individual. Understanding how a students learns whether it be visual or more technical is important. Also knowing the student's outside interests can help a teacher know how to use vocabulary that the student can grasp. I love seeing the progress from week to week that my students make. It is more about how they grow vocally and improve both their skills and talents as well as their confidence. When a student has that small breakthrough in a lesson, it is a moment to celebrate.

Thumbtack Spotlight

Barbara Ryan

(17 reviews)

Since the dawn of human history, music has played a vital part in man's activities. There are even some of us who learn to sing before we could learn to walk on our own. Our fascination with the art of music has led us to seek perfection in this craft, and that is why we are thankful for the likes of Barbara Tresidder Ryan.

Barabara offers her services as a voice and bodhran teacher in a relaxed and friendly environment.

I've generally focused on students that have an interest in singing for the pleasure of it and those whose primary goal is to heal an injured vocal instrument. I am therefore able to work with students in a well-rounded approach, with emphasis on the health and maintenance of the voice.

She has established good rapport with her students that many of them have become fast friends!

If you're interested in learning about the mechanics, maintenance and health of your vocal instrument in a relaxed, casual atmosphere with an experienced and caring teacher, I have just the thing for you!
