I am pleased to highly recommend Nick Pino, who is my tutor for Spanish. Having needed to enter an intermediate Spanish course after several years away from the language, the completion of which is a graduation requirement for a top-10 international relations program, Nick is working with me to not only meet this requirement, but also to identify and hone the areas necessary to mastering proficiency. From our very first session, he immediately made it a priority to take the time to understand my unique, individual needs. Not surprisingly, I've found that my confidence with Spanish grows every time Nick and I meet, whether over coffee or in a more formal setting, and studying under him has been the best investment I've made in my personalized, life-long learning path -- to include the (traditional) classroom/institutional settings, which cost far more! Ultimately, when it comes to learning Spanish, Nick is the consummate language professional. He works with you to improve your knowledge, sharpen your language skills and transform you into a Spanish-speaker. Nick Pino is the real deal! - Ry

Learning Spanish from Hilda is fun and achieves rapid progress. She tailors the classes to meet the student's goals and interests, so you can find yourself singing songs, reading anything from children's stories to newspaper articles, depending on your level of comprehension, and discussing movies, politics, or the antics of your dog, all in Spanish. She is always professional and friendly, can answer all your grammar questions, and arrives prepared. It is an uplifting experience to spend time with such a positive, thinking, dedicated teacher. She's the best there is!

    About

I have a BA in Spanish Literature from University of California, San Diego. This BA was achieved by 4 years of advanced college level writing and reading classes and extensive essay writing about literature and language in both Latin America and Spain. I started Spanish 1 in 8th grade and excelled up to Spanish 5 as a senior in high school. I took both the AP Spanish Literature and AP Spanish Language exams and received two "5" grades. I also took the International Baccalaureate exam for Spanish and received a 7 (the highest score). I studied abroad in Madrid, Spain for one academic year as a junior in college and took all my classes entirely in Spanish and passed with an A average. Spanish is and has always been my favorite subject, and I have a passion for speaking the language as a non-native speaker and enjoy teaching others how to learn!

    About

Tutoring - I am happy to tailor the tutoring experience to meet individual needs. I work together with students to create a plan for tutoring that may involve outside reading and "homework" assignments - if appropriate - to reinforce material covered in lessons. I am also adept at sensing when I may need to shift teaching methods or the pace of lessons for students and I encourage them to provide ongoing constructive feedback. Translations - I have been told that my translations get to the feel and intent of the original writing, beyond simply interpreting the literal meaning. Simply put, I take great care with my word choice in order to reflect the style, tone and subtlety of meaning conveyed by the author as closely as possible. Editing - I love that part of being a good editor is being a good teacher. I make recommendations to improve written material, and if I do my job well, the client learns something from the process. For example, perhaps they will gain insight on how to: make smooth transitions between paragraphs, provide sufficient evidence to support an argument, or reduce unnecessary words for clearer, more concise sentences.

It is my belief that a translator is above all a cultural broker. To this end I not only diligently research materials relevant to the translation at hand, but I also posses the linguistic acumen to select form various possible words for the one that best applies to the context I am translating. This leads to consistent and concise renditions that close the linguist gaps that can lead to contextual and/or cultural misunderstandings

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
