I hired Payne's Tree Service to remove three dead and/or dying trees (24" to 48" in circumference) from my backyard. I received four quotes from other companies and am very pleased with my decision to work with Steve. He provided a very fair estimate, was on time and very professional in outlining the cost for the job, and best of all, the work was excellent. The project was complicated by my (unexpectedly) very muddy backyard and the crew took exceptional care not to damage the grass and to avoid leaving ruts in the wet areas. Much appreciated, guys. The crew arrived on time, hauled off all the wood and debris, and left my backyard looking better than it did before they began their work. Kudos all around. I chose not to have the stumps removed because of where the trees were located in a mulched, woody area of the backyard and instructed Steve to cut them as close to the ground as possible - which was done as requested. I give Payne's Tree Service a 5-Star Excellent rating. I know who to call when I need tree removal/trimming services in the future. He followed up the next day with a courtesy call to make sure I was happy with the work as completed. I assured him that I was. P.S. The day after he finished my job, he began a project for my neighbor - who obviously was equally impressed by the work he did for us. Thanks, Steve!

Kenny & Matt are awesome. I had them fix my lawn - grading, drainage, new sod, edging, cut back bamboo, etc - and my trees. They were competitively priced (I got three estimates). They diagnosed our tree problem (including that one tree was hollow) and turned out to be completely right. They brought down the huge, hollow tree. The trimmed the other 4 oaks we have. The job they did with the lawn is just, wow. The lawn is bigger. They didn't just cut the bamboo, they dug up the roots and stumps to make sure the lawn was smooth. The drainage was corrected so that there aren't pools of water on the new grass. They trimmed the trees back so we have a lot more sunlight. Great work. They also trimmed the front yard - pulled up the weeds, ivy and virginia creeper, trimmed some hedges, bushes and trees. As a courtesy, they planted some plants I'd bought. And they knew what they were doing; underneath the ivy and weeds they found a few azalea bushes and saved them. Anyone whose known the frustration of having landscapers pull up your "weeds" only to discover it was actually your beloved plant, Smoot's Lawn and Tree care are your guys. Oh, and they're really nice and pleasant, showed up on time, and finished in just two days. I've already asked them to come back to do some other stuff.

I hired P&P to give my townhome backyard a complete makeover. They were able to design a new backyard for me that stayed within my budget and solved all my problems. They completed the job very quickly and professionally. The thing I enjoyed the most was the responsiveness and communication to all my messages. I knew that I was dealing with professionals from the first interaction.

I hired Lucas Tree & Landscaping to remove several large dead branches from a tree in my front yard through Thumbtack. I received a very reasonable quote within just a few hours and they were able to schedule an appointment quickly. The team was very professional and offered advice on maintaining the tree, removed some smaller trees in the backyard, and even assisted my neighbors with their tree as well. The team was quick and cleaned up the entire yard of debris. Very professional and I will be hiring them again to clean our gutters this fall. Thank you Homero and team!

A little bit expensive I guess for $2000 for 2 big trees but I guess we waited late to have them cut. When it was just a year ago somebody else was willing to cut them for only 1200. I just wished tree trimmers don't charge an arm and a leg to have trees cut and hauled away. Frank seem to be cheaper than the other quotes we received but still it's a lot of money. No damage was done to the house nor to the fence or our septic which we are very happy with. They also cleaned up afterwards. There were still a few holes I think which can not be avoided when they dropped the tree branches but grass seem to naturally fill up the holes again ..slowly.. We did not like the part that they parked the truck in the backyard I guess they did that to make their trip shorter instead of dragging the tree from the back to the front. Their truck left marks in our yard especially it had rained I guess. They also have to leave one part of the tree and he completely forgot to come back for it as promised. But once I emailed him about it, he came back for it another day while we weren't home. We are happy though for having those trees finally gone and for that I still give Frank and his crew 4 stars. If I didn't have to pay too much, it will be 5 stars.

I wanted my back yard grass removed and replaced with new sod and flower beds rejuvenated and mulched. Corey was personable and professional when he came to do an estimate. He asked questions to completely understand what I wanted and promptly forwarded a real, business estimate (not one scribbled on a piece of paper). He kept me informed of his schedule for the installation day (weather and sod availability concerns) and arrived right on time. I am extremely happy with the results of both sod replacement and flower bed work. Corey and David worked diligently, and everything was done with care and an obvious desire to exceed my expectations. My neighbors commented how impressed they were with not only the results but the attention to detail. I highly recommend JCD Improving for any lawn or landscaping project. They will be my first and only call for any other work!

B&G Construction did an amazing job! I had them rip up about 200 sq feet of concrete, regrade the backyard, and then sod the entire area. They were able to do the job very quickly, and the price was very reasonable. It was a pleasure to work with them, and I highly recommend B&G.

Justin's response when initially requesting a quote was quick and he was knowledgeable about what needed to be done when it came to dead limbs and clean up. He came back to re-confirm the work we wanted to be done once we decided to hire him and was able to arrange for a crew to do the work that following Monday. It was amazing to witness the climber do his work. We had 12 trees that needed to have limbs removed and they are large Oaks 100+ft tall and all around the house. He was precise about his roping and cuts and made taking a 50ft limb over our house look easy when he cut and had the crew pull it clear from the house. Truly amazing! The BEST part for me (expectations wise) about the entire process was the clean up. I was shocked at the clean up detail that happened around the house. I was sure I would be picking up sticks and leaves and saw dust for weeks. NOPE!!! not at all, any of the logs left behind that we requested to keep were neatly piled, the twigs all removed from the yard, gardens and grass, and most impressive was the blower that went around the yard to clear away any of the debris left behind. The trees look clean and refreshed and my yard looks "cleaner" than when they arrived. Truly professional. It appears the neighbors may also be impressed as they too are asking about Elite to come and work on their yards too! Thank you. You have made us customers who will choose to use your services and refer you to other homeowners. Thank you K, B and family

Joshua and his crew did an amazing job for us!!! I interviewed 5 different landscapers before deciding upon Kober's and I'm so glad we did! He transformed our Manakin Sabot home by adding a beautiful stacked stone retaining wall, removing the existing material, replanting an island of ornamental plants that were dead, adding a new driveway border on a very lengthy driveway, and MORE! In fact, he put stacked stone on the back side, visible from the inside windows of our home, simply because he knew it would look better as we looked out. I'll update my post by adding photos once the extra plants I ordered from him come in this week. He was so punctual and even worked on the 4th of July to finish our job before the weekend, although we certainly didn't expect that. The job took a few days and every single day, they would clean up the driveway and yard so that everything looked neat and clean after they left, just to bring it all back out the next day. That's having pride in your services, as well as your client's property. We had scorching hot temps while the job was going on but that didn't phase them --I am just so impressed. If you are looking for a landscaper who will provide excellent service at a very fair price, please do yourself a favor and hire Kober's Landscaping. Sure glad we did!

I use Lawnsy for the townhome I am currently renting. We are responsible for mowing the lawn, and they provide that service. It was hard to find a lawn service that would serve small lawn like ours, but they were able to help us out. I am really pleased with their service, they are punctual, and my lawn always looks great after they have been here.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
