I needed to have fixtures replaced in my tub/shower and bathroom sink. I hired Nick because of his estimate and the positive reviews I read on this site. I concur with all the 5 stars ratings this gentleman has received and would recommend him to all my friends and family who need plumbing work done! He is very competent, did an excellent job and went beyond what we discussed and cleaned out the drain that had been giving me problems, without changing the price!!! He's a gem!!!

So glad I found Gustavo! He replaced my kitchen sink faucet and did an incredible job repairing my windowsill (after my failed diy attempt to saw part of it off... long story). I really didn’t know if it was salvageable, but Gustavo came prepared and made it look better than new. Very professional and personable. Couldn’t be happier!

This is the first time I used Angela Maria Home Services, and I could not be more pleased with the results! The cleaning service was both excellent and inexpensive. The cleaner was professional, well equipped, speedy, and thorough! When I looked over the work, I had no need to ask for any tou ch ups. The whole house smelled SO GOOD. Fixtures sparkled; counters, floors, cabinets, and wood furniture were free from any deb ris or dust and looked and smelled so nice. Appliances were clean and shiney. The bathroom, tub, floors, and fixtures were squeaky clean. Even hard to clean areas, such as the tub were so clean. I will definately use this service again! And, the price can't be beat. It was the lowest price and the company responds quickly to any communication. WELL DONE!

Jose with Brandon contractor was fantastic. Jose and his team submitted the most competitive and thorough bid out of all the competition and proved to be very flexible with timing too. I elected to purchase all the supplies for my bathroom remodel and Jose did everything to help me in that process. Couldn't be happier with the final product.

Great experience working with Leonardo. He was prompt, professional and did a wonderful job. He fixed a giant hole in our kitchen ceiling from a bathroom leak. The original ceiling paint did not match so he even went to lowes to buy the correct color. All within two days. Will absolutely be hiring him again for future jobs around the house.

I'm glad we hired Julian. He has been very quick to respond to questions and has given us straight answers about how to handle a misbehaving water heater. He replaced a faucet and trap in our bathroom and his work looks good and was very reasonably priced. There was no mess to clean up. When another job kept him longer than expected he kept us in the loop so we knew when to expect him. I really appreciate how easy it is to reach him and get an answer to a question, the caliber of his work, and his straight forward honesty. We will definitely hire him again.

L&N (Sam and Daryll) were great to work with. Sam was super responsive and easy to work with in getting a quote and setting up an appointment-- he was even able to come on the weekend to do the quote and was able to schedule Daryll to come on the following weekend to do the work. The work was priced well and completed professionally. The quality of the work was good (we had a vanity ripped out of our bathroom and replaced with a new one). The new one looks great and we are happy with the work, especially given the reasonable price.

Erick and his team did a kitchen remodeling project for me in Fairfax. They installed recessed lighting, removed the bulkhead moved the air vent that was in the bulkhead, installed the cabinets and backsplash, installed new appliance and a new sink, faucet and installed new breakers for the new appliances. They did everything in a professional, neat and timely manner. He even came on a Sunday to accommodate my tenants schedule. My tenants told me that they have never seen any contractors who left the house clean and tidy at the end of each day. He was a true pleasure to work with and made the project easy even though I live 800 miles away. I highly recommend Ordonez cleaning service. He has earned my trust and I told him that I will count on him to take care of my house. In Virgina.

Matt's work has been excellent. He has done kitchen flooring as well as a bathroom for us, and will be doing another bathroom, kitchen backsplash, and fireplace surround for our house as well as some work on a rental property. He shows up on time, every day that he says he will be there (a rarity in contracting) and works hard. I couldn't be happier with the finished product. We will never use anyone else for tiling and are recommending to our family and friends.

Great experience - Joe has become my #1 go to plumber for all future plumbing needs as well. Countertop was installed on a Friday, meaning sink plumbing couldn't be installed til Saturday. Joe did not charge extra weekend duty price - showed up exactly on time, did professional quality work on reinstalling sink, garbage disposal, dishwasher and refrigerator ice maker.

If Drew’s Service Solutions and Jon Drew respond to your Thumbtack job, you are fortunate. Don’t overthink it; just do it. I’m an overthinker and had 5 companies come out to give estimates. Drew was the first one and I should have committed then. Three weeks ago, I’d never heard of Jon Drew. Today and after a week of nothing short of heroism in my old, concreted, plastered home in which he did, among other things, a whole-house repipe from galvanized to copper, I’m recommending him to all my friends. Why? Ok, this will take a while. 1. His work is careful, thoughtful and beautiful. The waterlines now run where they need to in the most efficient way possible. He understands the end user’s needs. Although not in our statement of work, he replaced my basement utility sink with something much more useful and attractive, while adding beautiful copper waterlines with their own cut-off valves. He also ran much more efficient and beautiful clothes washer waterlines and gave me a bonus laundry waterline box, also with cut-off valves. Check out the photos. 2. He keeps his word and doesn’t leave you wondering. With my plumbing job, he did exactly what he told me he would do, down to the time he said he would be there in the morning. He let me know in advance about any changes. 3. He’s an educator. He’s the expert and I’m not; I just knew I had some plumbing problems and trusted him to fix them. Not only did he fix them, he first took the time to explain to me what the issues were so I could make an informed decision what to do about them.

We hired SR Home Improvements because of a huge flood in our bathroom which left us without a bathroom ceiling, laundry room ceiling, nor a portion of our hallway wall. We were visited and given an estimate the next day, and the workers did such a wonderful job. It was such a pleasure to work with such kind, mindful (cleanliness, furniture positioning, safety, etc.) professionals who excel at what they do. Thank you!

Learned about Curtis' company through work he did for a neighbor who was extremely satisfied with his work. They allowed us to see the work he'd done on their master bath and it looked great. We had our townhouse kitchen renovated by them. Curtis provided a very comprehensive estimate which detailed some items we hadn't considered such as daily clean-up, the payment schedule, and how receipts would be handled for materials purchases. His estimate came in at the middle of 4 estimates we received for tear-down of the original kitchen, new cabinet installation, tile floors and backsplash with some electrical and plumbing thrown in. He was able to accommodate an earlier start date when the cabinets we ordered were available earlier then expected by 2 weeks. He and his 2 assistants worked efficiently and more importantly they took care when doing the demo (and throughout the project) to protect the hallway floors and other areas of the house from dust, dirt and debris. They worked very efficiently and by the end of the 2nd day were starting on laying the tile floor. Cabinet installation went smoothly and he was kind enough to point out a couple items which we needed to report back to the cabinet makers regarding some bowing. Overall the project took approximately 9 business days from start to finish with a few small visits to finish up hardware, trim and reinstallation of the dishwasher once the counters and sink folks (separate company) finished their piece. His 2 assistants were equally pleasant and made us feel comfortable so we could ask questions as needed. We plan to use Curtis' company Oddjobs.pro again for upcoming bathroom renovations and some other work we need done.

I hired Tak painting to paint my small dining room & bathroom. They did an excellent job and they were efficient & courtesy. They even came back to my apartment when I could not get the blinds down (which were pulled all the way for the paint job) and helped me. I would hire them again and I would recommend them to my friends & family.

They did a wonderful job completing our bathroom remodel. We had started the project, ran out of time, and needed it finished before the baby arrived. Shane was in constant communication and they addressed all of our concerns-- including some re-work when we changed our minds about the vanity we had selected. We will be using them in the future for our other home project needs (large and small).

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.

How do I remodel my bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling is made up of three general phases. The first phase is the planning and permitting phase, in which you determine exactly what you want, what materials and finishes will be used, and what the end product will look like. If you’re competent with design you can handle the planning yourself, or you may hire an interior designer to guide you. During this phase you’ll also hire a general contractor who can help execute your remodel vision, coordinating and overseeing all the subcontractors required to do the bathroom remodeling (plumbers, flooring pros, etc.). When your plan is finalized, your contractor should obtain permits for the work you want done. During this time you’ll work together to order all the materials so they’ll be ready and waiting when it’s time to start construction.

The second phase is construction. Bathroom remodeling typically starts with demolition, removing the old floors, shower and vanity to make way for the new. Delays in delivery of materials, or changing your mind and ordering different materials halfway into the project, will mean that construction has to pause until the new materials arrive. Each subcontractor is dependent on the next to do their work, and the general contractor should keep things moving along at the proper timeline, ensuring that the right materials are available and dealing promptly with any unexpected repairs, such as damage discovered behind the walls or under the floor. The general contractor will also coordinate inspections from the necessary officials if you’ve moved load-bearing walls or done electrical or plumbing work. After construction is complete, the final phase of bathroom remodeling is addressing your punch list. These are all the items that need to be corrected before final payment is handed over to the contractor.
