Keith provided outstanding service! I didn't buy the correct switch for the repair. Not only did he go with me to Lowes to get the correct parts but taught me through the process of installation. All while beating the hourly rates and total costs of competitors. Professional and I felt comfortable having him in my home. Will hire again!

I could have never asked for better service. Barahona is a real gentlemana and very professional . He gave me good reception, he diagnosed our problem before coming, he was very punctual, very efficient and the repair job was done in record short time. He is simply a very professional person. Most importantly the cost is just reasonable and more than fair. Having tried many maintenance and repair persons before he stands among the top. I wished I could rated him more than five stars, he deserves every honor. Keep up the good work Barahona AG Alexandria, VA.

Sam and his partner from Glass Co responded almost immediately to my request for a quote. They came over that same day to repair a broken double pane window in my living room. He repaired it on the spot and was finished in about a half hour. He was very professional and did an excellent job. I will hire him again should I have any other glass repair needs.

I give Jose Gonzalez and his team top marks. The paint job they did on the interior of my home (three stories, 4 bedrooms and 3.5 baths) and exterior front entrance was outstanding and exceeded my expectations. Replacement of the front storm door and locks on two exterior doors was also excellent, as was staining of my deck, repair to a piece of siding, complete interior house cleaning, and shampooing of all carpets. Their attention to detail was phenomenal. Not only was the paint job fantastic, but they took great care in ensuring there was no errant paint on floors/carpet, etc. Jose took great pains to ensure all work was perfect. When he was not satisfied about an aspect of the job, he had it redone until it met his demanding standards and I was completely satisfied. In order to compete the job within the allotted time, Jose and his crew worked long hours. Thanks to Jose and his team, my house never looked so good and I am confident that it will be sold quickly at a premium price. Jose and Brandon have my highest recommendation for any home repair/painting project; if Jose says they can do it, be assured that it will be done to the highest standards and completed on time.

Erick and his team are exceptional. I contracted Erick initially to do some minor house repairs. However, after not being satisfied with the work of contractor hired to paint, I asked Erick to do a lot more work to include painting, installation of kitchen appliance, replace flooring, miscellaneous carpentry, and electrical work. Erick was so responsive to my need to get the work done quickly as getting ready to list house. Quality of work is good, Erick knows his trade and made suggestions and recommendations that proved to be invaluable. His team are hard workers and take pride in what they do. And, the pricing is exceptional. Definitely recommend and will use again in the future.

I needed some drywall repair and painting in my Master Bedroom. Carlos did an excellent job from beginning to end. He provided a fast and very reasonable estimate. Carlos confirmed the apoint mentioned. The day prior and showed up 5 minutes early on the day of arrival. He consulted me throughout the job to make sure we were satisfied and cleaned thoroughly at the end. I highly recommend Carlos for drywall and painting.

The job was the installation of 4 pre-wired ceiling fans, two with external remote control systems. Mr. Dean was very accommodating with the scheduling of the work and came right on time in the afternoon. All four fans worked exactly as they should when the installation was complete, and he also repaired one of the light switches that had been incorrectly installed during the construction of the house. Mr. Dean was very pleasant to work with and very professional. The fact that he is a licensed electrician gave us the confidence to hire him and was a major plus when he found that one of the light switches that connected the fan and its light was not properly installed. Highly recommend him for this and any other electrical work.

My husband and I hired J & J Electrical Services to repair and replace an outside light on the front of our home and replace the light on the deck. Jonathan arrived on time and did an excellent job! His price was also great. He maintained contact with me to ensure that he had the correct address and also informed me when he was on the way. I did not get to meet him in person but my husband agrees that he was professional and fast. We look forward to working with him again!

What a wonderful find! Nery could not have been better! He got back to me very quickly, accommodated my schedule, and the quality and care of his work was too notch! My husband and I had terrible water damage done to our ceiling and looking at it today there's no evidence it ever happened! The dry wall repair and paint job was stellar. Nery was very clean and considerate, too. Would highly recommend!!!

Can't say enough about Norlan! My deck was in dire need of repair. When I purchased my home 4 years ago, the deck needed to be repaired, but I didn't have the money to do it at the time. When I was able to take care of it, Norlan responded and did everything we wanted and more. His team was professional, friendly, made sure I was happy with the work, and gave me an amazing price! After he finished the deck, we asked him to do more work. You won't regret using Norlan Construction. Great job!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good handyman?

Finding a good handyman can change your life. Within days, the endless list of insurmountable tasks that were either out of your skill range or impossible to fit into your busy schedule can be completed. If you know you want help but aren’t sure how to hire the right pro, ask these questions to find the right fit:

  • What is your work experience? If you are putting in a tile backsplash, you want someone experienced with the task, not someone who generally does painting and junk removal.
  • How much do you charge? Handymen often charge hourly rates that vary based on the complexity of the task they’re hired to do, as well as flat rates for standard jobs. Be clear about what they’ll charge before you hire them.
    • On that note, discuss payment details. It’s wise not to pay all the money up front, especially for larger projects. You may be able to pay a deposit for materials and pay the remainder upon project completion.
  • How long will the job take you to complete? If the handyman is as busy as you are and a fence repair is going to take months, you should probably find another qualified handyman for the job.

Read client reviews and follow up with references to make sure you’re choosing the right handyman for your projects. For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What does a handyman do?

A handyman is a skilled laborer who provides basic home repairs. Anyone can call themselves a handyman, although most who do so are skilled with repairs and home projects. Reading reviews is a good way to determine their fitness for your job. The tasks a handyman can perform include assembling furniture, painting interiors and exteriors, repairing fences, repairing broken doors or replacing trim, hanging lights, hooking up appliances, and much more. Handymen may have flat fees for certain services, or charge an hourly rate. Handyman rates are often lower than those of a contractor, as they don’t have the same specialization. Some states have no limit on the work a handyman can perform, while others do. For example, California’s Building and Professions Code section 7048 (small operations) permits handymen to provide work similar to that of a contractor (floor installation, painting, etc.) provided the total cost of labor and materials does not exceed $500. A handyman is a great resource for minor home repairs at a lower cost than a licensed contractor, but for more complex projects, it pays to hire a specialized contractor. Fore more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does a handyman charge?

The national average rate for handyman jobs is $90-$160. A handyman performs general maintenance and repairs for residential and commercial properties. A handyman may charge a flat fee for standard services that take a predictable amount of time, such as installing a new appliance, as well as an hourly rate for larger projects such as digging out and replacing a rotted fence post. A cost-saving strategy when hiring a handyman is to bundle all the tasks you want them to do into one visit to make the most of any minimum service fee. Hourly rates for a handyman can average $50-$100 per hour. Pricing will depend on skill and experience required for the job, as well as regional labor rates. Here are a few examples of average handyman flat rates.

  • Attic ladder replacement: $150.
  • Toilet replacement: $75.
  • Ceiling fan and light fixtures: $75.
  • Faucet replacement: $125.
  • Garbage disposal: $75.

Can a handyman do plumbing?

In some states, a handyman can provide plumbing services, but it may be in your best interest to call a plumber, particularly for issues more major than unclogging a drain or attaching a new sink. Hiring a plumber is important because mishandling your water and gas lines has the potential to do great damage to your home, your family’s health, or even the safety of your neighborhood. A handyman is not legally required to have any training or licensing in plumbing matters, while a licensed plumber has undergone years of education and on-the-job training. In some cases, homeowners insurance won’t cover damage caused by plumbing repair done by an unlicensed handyman.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, most plumbers learn their trade through a four- or five-year apprenticeship with 2,000 hours of paid on-the-job training. They also receive classroom education including “safety, local plumbing codes and regulations, and blueprint reading. They also study mathematics, applied physics, and chemistry. After completing an apprenticeship program, plumbers … are considered to be journey workers, qualifying them to perform duties on their own,” according to the DOL. Licensed plumbers should do continuing education to keep abreast of safety and technology changes. Poor plumbing can lead to sewage backups, a flooded home or even natural gas leaks, so it’s best to leave it in the hands of a specialized professional.
