The manager called me directly to evaluate my son and then recommended several different tutors – both in person and online. We ended up doing online and are very happy.

My 12 year old son has only had two one hour lessons with Aura, and my husband and I are amazed at how much he has learned. My son was very excited to have a Spanish class this year, but the class ended up being cancelled. We decided to find a tutor, and it is one of the best decisions we have made. My son is committed to learning the language which helps, but Aura is fabulous. She is patient, and seems to naturally be able to gauge where he is at in ability - challenges him, but doesn't overwhelm him. At the end of his second lesson, he showed us a page of sentences he wrote! I would recommend Aura to anyone. Our older son will be starting lessons as well in a few months.

Amazing tutor. I went with him several times and he was very patient with me and amazing to work with. He helped even with regular classwork and still prepped me and gave me complete work packets to work with and notes.

I hired Mougy to work with me to write a paper in a graduate level quantitive analysis class I was taking. Even though he was not familiar with the exact subject matter he took the time to learn what he could in the short time I had to prepare it. Not only was he the reason I got an A on the paper, but I learned more in the few weeks we worked together than I did in the class. I would recommend him to anyone and I am looking forward to working with him again in a statistics class I will be taking later this year. I must also state that his prices are more than reasonable considering he also continued to work with me via phone and email when we did not have the time to get together and work on solving my questions. I am pleased to highly recommend Nick Pino, who is my tutor for Spanish. Having needed to enter an intermediate Spanish course after several years away from the language, the completion of which is a graduation requirement for a top-10 international relations program, Nick is working with me to not only meet this requirement, but also to identify and hone the areas necessary to mastering proficiency. From our very first session, he immediately made it a priority to take the time to understand my unique, individual needs. Not surprisingly, I've found that my confidence with Spanish grows every time Nick and I meet, whether over coffee or in a more formal setting, and studying under him has been the best investment I've made in my personalized, life-long learning path -- to include the (traditional) classroom/institutional settings, which cost far more! Ultimately, when it comes to learning Spanish, Nick is the consummate language professional. He works with you to improve your knowledge, sharpen your language skills and transform you into a Spanish-speaker. Nick Pino is the real deal! - Ry

Mrs. Belle was an amazing tutor. We hired her to help my brother study for the GED. She accessed his needs expertly, was very patient with him, and her study methods helped him gain confidence in his trouble learning areas. Mrs. Belle is highly recommended for your tutor needs!

Andrew Sun To whomever this concerns, Before I signed up with this tutoring program, I was not very good academically. In fact, I was the worst in the toolshed. Knowing that I have no time to lose and my bleak future is upon me, I did what many people think it's best; To join the military. I didn't know what to expect of the navy to be honest, so I was unaware of the test you need to take called the asvab. My heart sank a little. I began searching on the Internet, looking for a tutor (especially on math) until I found out about Theo. Theo is the CEO for student circle and unlike other tutors; he is the only one that stood out. He is understanding, ambitious, and kind, but most importantly he can relate to you, creating a special bond which prompts you to succeed. So I explained to him my situation and he set me up with another tutor by the name of Xin. Right off the bat both of us got along and he helped me through two grueling months. There were times when I wanted to give up, but he was there for me. The funny thing is, he is going through an exam as well during my time with him, so he is the hardest working tutor I have ever came across. I swear, these two do actually care about me because when I took the asvab, I scored high enough to achieve some of the most coveted jobs the navy has to offer! These two will forever be part of my family. Student circle has the best sessions as well as memories. Thank you. Andrew

I started with her tutoring my 6 year old son in reading/writing he excelled after one report card quarter and was on grade level in no time! So I decided to face her tutor my 10 year old in Math even though he needed extra attention and modified work due to his learning disability ms P never gave up and remained professional always communicating with his teacher as well as myself and husband. He is now on grade level. Both of my boys have been tutoring with ms p for over a year! I like her style of teaching and her consistency. She really pushes my boys just enough!

Nancy is always punctual and prepared for teaching different lessons. She is a great listener and instructor since she is able to connect with students effectively when teaching various lessons. She uses different methods of teaching which helps students learn since they are responsive to the different techniques implemented. She is great colleague who is always helpful to others and maintains her priority on her students. I think that Nancy is always able to overcome any challenges that students face as she is always helpful and has had previous experience teaching students of all levels. I think that she has great work quality, that she is professional and she is always a pleasure to work with.

Mary worked with my son (a sophomore in high school) for nine weeks, and the change in my son's confidence with writing improved significantly. Starting in first grade he developed a dislike for writing, which over the years turning into almost a phobia. He was so intimidated by the process, that he would rather fail than turn in an essay. As a result, he never really learned HOW to write, and his anxiety increased. Mary worked with him, starting with the basics of how to map out and organize a persuasive essay. What took him hours before, he was able to accomplish in less than half an hour. It was very empowering, and helped him considerably with facing writing tasks. One thing that I didn't expect with a writing tutor was Mary's incorporation of subtle life coaching. She had him examine his motivations and his goals. They even did personality testing. I think it was very eye-opening for him to have the chance to look at himself from a different vantage point. Her approach is very supportive and validating. She knows what to ask to make you (both the student and the parent) feel important and interesting. Finally, one of the things I appreciated most as a parent, was that she sent me an email after every session detailing what they had done and explaining her plans for the next session. I can't recommend her highly enough.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.

How much does home tutoring cost?

Investing in home tutoring is an investment in your child’s future. Home tutors work one on one with your child to address their challenge areas and provide room for intellectual growth that may not happen in a busy classroom. The cost of home tutors depends on multiple factors including where you live, the tutor’s background and education, the subject matter, and how often the tutor comes. Test prep home tutoring is typically more expensive than single-subject tutoring. Here are some examples of average tutoring costs:

      • National average cost for an algebra home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for a French home tutor: $30-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for a geometry home tutor: $50-$60 per hour.
      • National average cost for a math home tutor: $40-$50 per hour.
      • National average cost for reading and writing home tutor: $40-$60 per hour.
      • National average cost for an SAT home tutor: $70 per hour.
      • National average cost for an ACT home tutor: $70-$100 per hour.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
