Coldsmoke Creative got our business up and running from the ground up. They helped us with branding (logo creation), site content (copywriting), ecommerce (setup our products and integrated with a payment processor) and web development (created a member's only website with an e-course and forum). Once the site was built, they setup and managed our Facebook advertisements to help us get a steady stream of customers.

Concentria hired us to update our site which was out of date - they quickly replaced everything with our new content and helped us set up a site where we could add news and update our content ourselves without having to give everything to a developer. THey helped us sort through a great deal of images and edited and added images and graphics which really made our site shine.

I was looking for a level of professionalism that I was missing with my previous website companies.   I love working with other small businesses, but find that - at least in the fields of website design and graphic design - they are not always great with project management, follow through and customer service. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve emailed a request for an update in my blog entry or in website content and not heard back from the designer for a week. Or I wrote an email asking for an update, only to receive no acknowledgement that the email was received and the changes scheduled to be made.   I was looking for a web designer who was not only talented, but could deliver - and keep delivering what I needed month after month. It may have taken longer to complete than I had originally planned, but I never thought the project was not moving forward. I was content with the pace since I didn’t want to rush the process and be disappointed or unhappy with the final results. You brought ideas to the table that complemented what I wanted to do with my website and your design exceeded my expectations. I was willing to pay more for your continuing monthly service than I had paid previously because you laid out what I could expect from you and your co-workers. So far, you have under promised and over delivered.

There are an overwhelming number of options out there when it comes to web designers, so when our company needed a new website we felt a little lost. We came across Nebula Media through Thumbtack and Jason responded to us within minutes. I could tell by the level of detail in the questions he asked that this was going to be a good partnership. Not only did Jason listen to the myriad of requests we had as far as the content and functionality that we wanted in our website, but he also took time to familiarize himself with our inspiration, competition and our overall business model and intent. His recommendations were always supported with an exponential amount of knowledge, which truly elevated our project to another level. In the end, Jason gave us a website that is not only user-friendly for both our team and our clients, but looks amazing, too! He truly went above-and-beyond, exceeding our expectations and we’d recommend him to anyone.

I've spoken and worked with a great deal of so called SEO and online marketing experts for a line of businesses and have heard it all. NOVA Advertising however, is different. They are honest, and straight forward and provide you with a deeper understanding of online marketing elements, rather than repeating the same garbage the other companies spew. NOVA Advertising developed a website for me, with full SEO components, and a comprehensive marketing strategy, based on our needs. The site started bringing in traffic and sales from the start! We are now working together on our next project. We are using NOVA for content development, email marketing, user experience design suggestions, and social media.

Spectrum Solutions answered a help wanted ad I ran for a new webmaster; I always hire and work with my own employees so at first I wasn’t interested in working with someone outside my company. I was impressed with the interview and decided this time to go with a company. Spectrum Solutions answers emails within five minutes pretty much day or night and usually has any small web item added, deleted or modified within ten minutes. I have not run into any delays by not having an employee on premise. The numerical results of their work so far have been very positive; both my pageviews and visit counts are up 40% over a site we had worked on for ten years. Plus, I feel with their quantitative approach to facebook marketing, we are adding a new dimension to our business, showing increases in sign ups for our newsletter as well as in traffic to our web sites. They usually experiment with a small budget first to see what works before they recommend a new project. They are careful with our ad money and doesn’t seem to believe in a one-pattern-fits-all approach. I would heartedly recommend this company. They are prompt, direct, concise, humorous, and in general, a pleasure to work with. http://www.barnettharley.com/ http://www.barnettbmwmotorcycles.com/ http://www.barnetthusqvarna.com/ http://www.barnettsmagazine.com/ http://www.indianmotorcycleofelpaso.com/ • Website(s) re-design, content re-structuring & re-development • Social Media for Barnett Harley-Davidson. Daniel Bender created website at a moment's notice. I posted a job to design/build a website and he responded within minutes by phone and text. He understood we needed a quick turn around and got in his car and drove right over for an introductory meeting within a half hour of our first phone conversation. Dan assessed our needs, explained how he could help, and within a few hours he got a website up and running that would allow the organization to then customize and add additional content. It would have taken us much more time, effort and stress just to come up to speed on where to begin. He was a lifesaver--calm, confident, knowledgeable and skilled. It was an amazing experience from start to finish.

I worked with Bradley at The Writers Club, an online writing organization. He was CEO and I served as VP sales/marketing. He was an outstanding leader, a great writer and an extremely savvy IT professional. Under his leadership, we were very early adopters of a LOT of new technology that's used today. Amazon.com uses print on demand technology (POD) to publish books one at a time. But we used it first in the late 1990s. Universities and corporations use distance learning today to extend their reach and make it easier for more and more students to learn from anywhere in the world. These are only two examples of his visionary talents ... almost like a lesser know 'Steve Jobs' in technology. He's just brilliant!

At the very beginning of our working relationship, Jane spent a GREAT deal of time helping me narrow down what the specific and unique focus of my book was, and the time she took to help me with this critical foundational aspect of the whole book was monumentally important. In similar fashion, she devoted a lot of time and expertise toward helping me identify and promote myself as a legitimate author whose voice and authority are valid and necessary. Then throughout the writing and editing stages, Jane engaged herself in the work not only as a copy editor but also as a potential consumer/reader of the book, which pushed me to make the content more coherent and more accessible to the reader. In addition to her knowledge and skills regarding format, style, and grammar, she has a good sense of how to maximize a book's chances of attracting, maintaining, and rewarding its readers. Additionally, throughout the entire project, Jane was just as attentive to what the book meant to ME, the author, as she was to what the book would mean to the reader. Overall, I enjoyed the working relationship that Jane and I had, and she helped me to grow in so many ways.

            Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Why should you hire a web designer?

Your website is often the first thing your customers see when they’re searching for a business or service on the web. As the face of your organization, your website needs to be attractive and functional, offering the latest features that users now expect. To plan and design a site that both reflects your company’s mission and values and appeals to customers takes a professional web designer. While free online services can help people set up websites, web designers can provide a unique solution made specifically to meet customers’ personal or business needs.

Most web designers offer a wide variety of services to make your website aesthetically pleasing and easy to use. Modern web design must be mobile-friendly and scalable, capable of expanding to include a blog, social media sites, and even video streaming; web designers are experts at integrating various web technologies. They can build the site, add functionality, test it, launch it on a live server, and track and maintain its performance.

In addition to web design and graphic design, some web design providers also offer development and security services, including search engine optimization (SEO), social media marketing and management, logo design, site maintenance, domain registration and hosting, protection against malware, and digital marketing and content services.

How much do web designers charge?

The average cost for hiring a web designer varies greatly depending on the scope of the work, which may range from building a site from scratch to rebranding an existing one, as well as the amount of content and graphics the designer will create. In general, the more complex the project, the more time the design agency will have to spend. Because web designers often work on an hourly basis, the longer the project, the higher the costs; you can count on the web designer spending at minimum 10 hours to create a very basic website with just a handful of pages with few elements. Prices also depend on the designer’s skill set, the process, and the company’s rates. In general, the national average cost for a basic website package starts at $500, but a customized website can cost as much as $2,000 or more. Here are typical average hourly rates, broken out by the complexity of the work:

            • Basic layout and user interface: $15-$40 per hour
            • Content management system design: $20-$50 per hour
            • Custom website design with custom code: $45-$75 per hour

What should you look for in a website designer?

A professional web designer creates the look and feel of your website, collaborating with you to choose colors, creating logos and other branding materials, establishing page layouts, and creating sample pages. An important part of web design is making sure the site is functional, meets your goals, and is easy for users to navigate. When you’re looking to hire a web designer, start by reviewing the person’s portfolio. Look for samples of work that match what you envision for your website, including experience building the types of pages or features you want. Make sure the web designer is familiar with your industry and understands both industry trends and web design trends — an old-fashioned or out-of-touch site will turn customers away rather than intrigue them.

Because web designers tend to work as freelancers on a project basis, they must be excellent communicators, willing to manage their own work, and available on your schedule. Some critical skills, such as working collaboratively and responding enthusiastically to feedback, aren’t core to good web design, but make working with a web designer much easier. Finally, look for a web designer who has cross-functional knowledge, such as understanding marketing and conversion rate optimization in addition to web design.

What do you look for in a web design company?

The web design company you choose must be able to interpret your company’s mission and identity and turn it into an appealing website that connects with potential customers. They must help you reach your target audience and meet your business goals. A web design agency should have on staff both talented web designers, with fresh ideas and extensive technical and creative skills, and a marketing team that knows how to drive traffic to your site, encourage visitor engagement, and convert visitors into customers. Web designers should be able to build in search optimization and integrate your site with a content management system and e-commerce tools. Look, too, for a website design company that understands responsive design and can optimize your website for mobile devices and desktop browsers. The right web design company understand current design and website trends, has experience building sites in a variety of industries (not just yours), and has an expansive portfolio of live websites. Finally, don’t simply hire the cheapest bidder — in web design, as in all things, you get what you pay for.

How do you hire a web designer?

You’ve determined that the best way to create a professional, modern, mobile-friendly new website is to hire a professional web designer to build it. To hire the best person for the job — and to get the web design that best fits your company’s identity — it’s important to ask a few key questions:

            • What’s the scope of the work? Will the website be basic with just a few pages about your company, its services, and contact information? Or will it also have an e-commerce section for online shopping, a blog, or content for visitors to download? Before you hire a web designer, make sure you have a thorough, specific list of the components you must have the designer include in the web design.
            • What do you want your website to look like? Consider websites that are similar to the one you’d like to build, ideally in the same industry or serving similar types of customers. Build a set of examples of types of pages, design aspects, and website features that you can hand off to the web designer — the person you hire should have experience creating websites with the features you want. If they don’t have the right skill set, they’re not the right pro for you.
            • What’s the web designer’s start-to-finish process? What will the final deliverable be? Before you hire someone, make sure their availability works with your timeline and that their process meets your expectations. Most important is finding a web designer who will work collaboratively with you to create a successful online presence.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
