Absolute must, don't go to anyone else for your graphic design needs. I don't think I've ever written a review for anything, ever. But Cory Wright is without a doubt some one that needs recognition for his amazing work. I put a request out through thumbtack looking for a designer and within 10 minutes Cory responded. Within 30 I already numerous emails with rough drafts, and less than 24 hours he had completed what I'd asked him for. The professionalism, courtesy and willingness to help are beyond words. He updated me with every correction no matter how minor just to make sure it was perfect. Great to know people like this are still out and care about their performance.

The job required installation of several floor cabinets in a kitchen. On one side the cabinets were raised off the floor, mounted away from the wall, and a butcher block counter top cut and installed. On the other, sink side, a cabinet was installed and all cabinets on that wall were leveled to allow for installation of a counter top. The individual doing the job provided ideas on how to proceed and worked quickly to provide a quality product. He was willing to work around the clock to complete the installation and worked continuously while on site. I trust his judgement and his work ethic is above reproach. I would certainly recommend him for any job you may have.

When a company has 5 stars it automatically makes me suspicious because so many companies are paying for reviews. With that said, Woodland Outdoor's team deserves every star of this review. First of all, they came over 3 times to work with us on the design of our patio, talk about our options, and make us feel 100% comfortable with the project. When the team showed up they were extremely professional. All of the crew introduced themselves and shook our hands. They worked from 7 AM - 4PM each day with few rests. Everyone was constantly working, and working hard. Our patio, landscaping, and garage pullout turned out beautifully. We could not be more happy. We highly recommend Scott and his entire crew. If you need a reference, contact us, it will be glowing.

I have worked with Mark Barrett, owner of Top Notch General Contracting for almost 10 years. He has basically redone my entire home...from exterior doors and windows, gutting and remodeling baths, removing a fireplace and reworking the roof, and much more! He has gutted and installed a brand new kitchen at my Mom's home and completed work at many of my real estate client's homes. Top Notch contractors are particularly excellent carpenters and drywall installers, but they can do any job you need. Mark is timely and does what he says he is going to do. If a subcontractor does not do a job right, Mark will redo it himself until you are satisfied. I will not work with anyone but Top Notch!

Don and his crew helped remodel my father's house. We ended up doing a whole house remodel and sold the house in less than one day with full asking price. They were complete professionals, we had tight deadlines and they not only met those, but they also exceeded our expectations with the finished product. Can't say enough good things about the way Don and his crew worked with us throughout the process to make a big project a success. Nothing was an issue for these guys from brand new kitchens, baths, carpets, to finishing hardwood floors. The house turned out amazing.

I recently hired Mr. Powers to install a subway tile backsplash in my newly renovated kitchen. I am 100% pleased with his work. I received a phone call the same day of my inquiry and installation was complete within the next two days. Mr Powers was very proffessional, timely, and respectful. Mr. Powers was very reasonable in his pricing as well as willing to work around my schedule, he even stayed late into the evening to complete the installation. All debris was cleaned up, counters wiped and floors swept. I have used several different contractors throughout my renovation and can honestly say this was my first experience with no complaints. I have already recommended him to other family members in need of simular work. I would and will without a doubt use his services again. Thank you so much for your hard work!

These ladies showed up on a mission and didn't stop until a miracle happened in my living room and kitchen! I had just moved in with too many boxes and furniture and clothes, and was overwhelmed at the amount of work it required. I called for help and they were able to schedule me just in time for company. It's unbelievable the amount of work that got accomplished today. It was exactly what I wished for!

I'm so happy with the both projects Josh did for me. I have had a lot of contractors in and out while trying to get back to normal after a flood and by far Josh has been the most professional and friendliest person I have had the pleasure of working with. He is punctual and reliable and really made me feel like it was a partnership. He kept me up to date on how things were going and let me know if he came across any issues. He came up the designs for my kitchen and pantry and they turned out better than I ever imagined. The finished projects are so awesome they look like they were built with the house. He is a skilled carpenter and really takes the time to make sure the project is done to perfection. He cuts materials on site, cleans up after himself and works diligently to get the job done quickly. He respected my home and never left a speck of dust or debris anywhere. It was so refreshing working with him and I will certainly call him for our next project.

I was talking to my wife last night over dinner about my first time experience getting help on remodeling designs (I’m a new house flipper). I had planned to have another designer come and help with designs on my other flip I just closed on today. Shelly knew she was “interviewing for a job” Because of her commitment and service, my experience with her was second to no one! So, I’m sure we will be talking again very soon. 🙂

Working with Ryan was a great experience! He was competitively priced, in advance of coming out he ran through what my projects would entail to execute, he made recommendations for important fixes I would have missed, provided me with an estimate which he stayed within, he guarantees his workmanship, and worked on three repairs/additions to my plumbing in one day. He was more than happy to field my questions, and was good at explaining the procedures, both of which were important to me. Despite the unpleasantly cold weather, when he arrived he was chipper and eager to start working. I would definitely recommend Ryan's services and would work with him again on future projects!

Robert did an amazing job. A true carpenter and very professional. I would recommend him highly to anyone needing carpentry work done. The crown molding above my kitchen cabinets is beautiful. He also completed my sliding glass door trim in the rain no less and did a really nice job.

They did a wonderful job doing the backsplash in my kitchen and tile work in my bathroom. My walls were very uneven and they put in a lot of extra time to even everything out. Definitely paid attention to detail, showed up on time, and we're professional. I will absolutely be using them again!

I hired Virginia Kitchens (The IKEA Installer for Hampton Roads) to install my IKEA kitchen and what a great choice. From design to finish they were in constant communication. I am so glad I decided to give them the job when my order had arrived and it was 146 boxes. But on the first day they sorted through the boxes and had everything organized and within an hour had cabinets already built. I am so happy the way the kitchen turned out and thank Virginia Kitchens for all the hard work.

Matt's expertise was instrumental to the outcome of our very complex kitchen remodel. He had great ideas to keep our project moving and was always available to provide input or weigh-in our decisions. He was also very patient with our changes and indecisiveness :-). The end product was nothing less than stunning...we could not be happier with Matt's services.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What do interior designers do?

Interior designers do much more than pick complementary paint colors and choose matching furniture — although those tasks are important parts of the job. Unlike decorators, interior designers usually have an associate of science degree or certificate of achievement in interior design from an accredited program. They’re trained in drafting, lighting and computer aided design (CAD), and are experts in room-specific design and residential space planning. Interior designers use these skills to plan and design safe, highly functional and beautiful interior spaces, from kitchens and bathrooms to family rooms and bedrooms. They determine space requirements, work within building codes and inspection regulations, and meet accessibility standards. An interior designer’s day-to-day job includes creative and technical tasks, both of which often require great communication skills:

  • Creating model rooms and visuals using design software.
  • Researching different textiles, materials, finishes, lighting and furniture.
  • Hiring suppliers, vendors, and contractors.
  • Estimating costs and making bids on potential jobs.

How do you find a good interior designer?

For many homeowners, the difference between a good interior designer and a bad one is simply a matter of taste — but all good designers have similar skill sets. Interior designers usually have a degree or certificate in interior design, with training in design principles and lighting, drafting, and computer aided design (CAD) software. Good interior designers have strong color balancing skills and understand how different colors influence spatial perception and moods. They know the building and electrical codes in the areas where they practice, and they make sure that any contractors they hire also work to those codes. They are knowledgeable about different upholstery fabrics and draperies, stay ahead of residential design trends, and maintain their own individual creativity. Also, good interior designers have excellent space designing skills, so they can arrange a space efficiently and with ideal traffic flow. Ultimately, hiring a good interior designer means pinpointing one whose signature style is complementary to your personal style — so checking out many designers’ portfolios is a must — and whose communication methods match yours.

How do you choose an interior designer?

Choosing an interior designer is all about finding one whose signature style fits well with your tastes and who can work within your budget. To choose the right professional for your interior design project, ask yourself these five questions:

  • What is your signature style? Good interior designers can both describe their personal aesthetic and demonstrate their signature style through their portfolios. Make sure it appeals to you.
  • How will you make sure the design fits my lifestyle? Good designers understand that the interior design must improve a homeowner’s experience in their home and fit into their lifestyle; for example, a white suede sofa is a poor choice for a family with large dogs and small children.
  • How much do you charge? Depending on the project, an interior designer may charge an hourly rate, a flat fee or a percentage of the project’s total cost.
  • How will you stick to my budget? An interior designer should have a plan for staying within your budget, which includes full transparency of costs and flexibility when choosing materials and furnishings.

Because an interior design project is highly collaborative and based on hard-to-define personal preferences, it’s most important to choose a designer who communicates clearly and listens closely to you.

How much do interior designers charge?

You can hire an interior design for a job as basic as a one-room consultation or as complex as supervising the design of an entire new home, helping with space planning, choosing color palettes, and shopping for furniture, flooring and artwork. The size and scope of the job will determine how much an interior designer charges; the average national cost for an interior designer ranges from $75 to $100 or more per hour. Other cost factors include the person’s reputation — interior designers to the stars are usually more expensive — and region. Most interior designers charge an average of $100-$225 for an initial consultation, but some will charge an hourly rate, usually starting at an average of $50, for larger projects that require extensive consultations. Hourly rates may be available for smaller projects, such as redecorating a living room or staging a home for sale; for instance, shopping and consulting can cost an average of $75 to $100 per hour, while staging costs and average $95 per hour. For many homeowners, a percentage of an interior designer’s cost is recouped through the professional discounts they receive from their vendors.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
