Donta inspected and cleaned my furnace. He communicated with me several times about timing and showed up promptly at the time we agreed on. He explained exactly what he was going to do before he arrived, and charged a very fair price to perform the service. This is the sort of service experience I appreciate--clear, human communication; fair pricing; and quality work. I'd definitely hire Donta to perform more HVAC and other work at my home.

Overall I am very happy with the work done by D&H. As background, the company is a two man team where Justin handles the business negotiations while Mike does most of the on-the-ground work. Both were pleasant to work with and the project proceeded very quickly--I was able to have a remodel of my bathroom completed in less than a week. The price was very reasonable: the job was done for approximately 2/3 of what Home Depot quoted me, while using substantially better materials. They were flexible about customizing things (e.g. I wanted my vanity raised, and they built a platform to do it for a small extra charge). They also went the extra mile to ensure customer satisfaction: when I didn't like the arrangement of some tiles that had been laid, they replaced those tiles free of charge. Justin checks in every day to make sure that the project is proceeding smoothly. My only real criticism of the experience is that Mike and Justin are not always on the same page, and this can require some legwork on the part of the customer to clear up misunderstandings. Ultimately not a big issue, though it is something that they could work on.

Constable Construction Inc. Con is not your everyday contractor. He and his crew were an absolute pleasure to work with. They ran a very clean jobsite and communication was strong. Often sending messages showing photos of job progress. I found Con and his team to be extremely honest and friendly. Great focus on quality and customer satisfaction. Everyone on his team would ask for our feedback to ensure we were satisfied. Like any job, ours provided a few challenges and with Con and his team we always got to a positive outcome. From our first meeting to the finished product we could not have been happier. Constable Construction build us a beautiful new home and we made new friends along the way. My wife and I would highly recommend them for your next project. Kim and Warren Paulson Shenandoah, VA

I am so happy to have found Joe and his assistant, Ronnie through this site!!! Prompt, reliable, and a pleasure to be around, I will never hire anyone else to work on my home! They are incredible. They can do anything, and do it well. Honest, capable, trustworthy and skilled, the perfect combination: I recommend them for any project, big or small. I was only sad to see them go once I couldn't think of anything else that could be fixed! I can't speak highly enough of them both. Don't waste your time looking around, these guys are the real deal!

I sold a turn key log cabin out of our area. Mr Toms handled the construction of the home professionally, without oversight to a very satisfactory finish.

One Review for Miller Lane Studio I recently completed a complete renovation of my kitchen/bath/laundry area of my 20 year old home with the help of Miller Lane Studio. From our first meeting, Thea listened to my ideas and I told her I have a terrible time making decisions but basically knew what I liked. She helped guide me through a project that is not only beautiful, but functional...everything WORKS! Together we chose just the right colors, styles, and designs so that when it was done, it is MY kitchen, comfortable and completely meets my needs. Throughout the process the majority of the time our design choices meshed. In a couple of instances, Thea was able to show me a better option and explain or show me exactly why it made more sense. Seeing everything now, she is a genius! The project looks put together, functional, and definitely something I never could have done on my own. I also found Miller Lane Studio's fees to be very reasonable and always mindful of the overall budget when making recommendations. Plus, when finished with such a large project and be able to say, "I would do a thing differently..." is worth a million dollars!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
