I highly recommend Tricia for anyone desiring help training their pup. We've used 3 other trainers for our mastiff and none of the prior trainers have provided the level of explanation of behavior or improvements we've seen in my dog. She always maintains a calm and positive attitude while training myself and my dog. We really couldn't be happier with her as a trainer.

I was so blown away by OLK9 and what it did for my 3 year old GSD/Akita mix who did a 2 week board and train. They totally transformed my dog and helped bring out the awesome dog I always knew was there! I felt totally at ease leaving him with them and they gave me frequent updates throughout the 2 weeks. I was so impressed and would definitely recommend the investment! My dog and I are both a million times happier and I know if I ever have any further problems that they will be there to troubleshoot and help. Taking my dog to OLK9 was without a doubt one of the best decisions I've ever made.

Cynthia is very caring and responsible when it comes to caring for my dog. I never worried when she was looking after my dog and she followed all the instructions I left with her. She is also very knowledgable about animals so if something were to happen I would have complete confidence that she would deal with it in the appropriate manner. We always ask Cynthia to look after our dog and have no reservations recommending her.

I just wanted to post to say how amazing my first lesson was. My dog Maddie is a very “scared “dog, so I thought she would be harder to get through than most. She is frightened by noises, won’t walk on a leash (unless it is a trail with no one around) and if she is scared for whatever reason, she won’t even go in our own back yard. She, in essence, is a homebody (and very well behaved there). The first lesson Jessica came and Maddie was doing her normal barking, tail tucked between her legs running around the house, afraid of strangers. However, within the first 10 minutes, she got Maddie to warm up, the tail was un-tucked and she was playing! The best part was she was able to get Maddie to walk on her leash outside, around the block. Normally, when I try and walk her anywhere near cars, noises and people, she immediately freezes and refuses to walk. Jessica got her to walk around our apartment complex, no problem. I was amazed. I have been using the same techniques and have been able to walk her much farther distances these past few days. I highly recommend Jessica and I can’t wait until I have more lessons to work out all Maddie’s little quirks.

Our 3 year English Cocker Spaniel, Riley, has stayed with Theresa on three separate occasions and I can highly recommend her for boarding your dog. I am very fussy about where I leave Riley. He comes home from Mahogany Ridge both happy and tired from the exercise. I highly, highly recommend Theresa.

Karin was great to work with. She got as much information on the home environment and the puppy as she could before the first meeting so she would be a step ahead in recommendations. She was very observant and supportive of the already established relationship between myself and my puppy. I learned many things I had no clue about or even thought to ask. She has tremendous experience and patience. I was very pleased with the initial meeting and know that if I have further questions or training needs, they will be met in the same positive manner.

I am so thankful for Emily! My Caesar loved working with her! Not only did she train Caesar (my male shepherd), but she also helped give me to tools to keep working with him after the training was over! I have now have been working with my puppy (since we don't live near Emily anymore) and I have the tools I need to give her some basic obedience! I'm so thankful for sweet, welbehaved dogs, and it is all because of Emily!

Jess is an amazing trainer. She is so patient with all of her clients (dogs and humans alike). She is willing to help in any way possible to ensure my peace of mind while working with my dog. She has revolutionized my relationship with my dog as well. I am so pleased with how my dog responds to me because of the foundation Jess started.

Heidi has an innate talent with animals of all sorts. She does an excellent job handling and caring for my rabbits. She has also been a big part of my 2 rescued dogs lives. She walks them, trains them, and provides 24 hour care by pet sitting in my home when I need to go out of town. She does exactly what I ask her to do regarding walking, exercising, feeding and bathing the dogs and they really enjoy her company. I highly recommend her services to anyone who wants outstanding care for their animals. If you are considering hiring her feel free to contact me if you have any questions! jpartin26@gmail.com

        About

Atlantic Coast K-9 has been in business since 1999. I (Ralph Smith) have personally trained over 3,000 dogs and am recognized as one of the Top Trainers in the country. Most trainers in today's world are extremely basic and gimmicky in what they train your dog to do. That's a sure sign of an amateur. There are no gimmicks with me. I didn't get the reputation that I have for giving subpar training. My slogan is that we offer "Competition Level Obedience for the Average Dog". You can easily pick a dog out of a crowd that I have trained because that dog will be far superior to any of the other dogs around. I have titled more dogs than most other trainers and I am a National Level Competitor in Sport Dog Competition. Simply put, to get to the level that I have attained, you have to be the best of the best. That's what I have to offer you. My prices are reasonable but I'm sure that you can find someone cheaper. Just remember that you get what you pay for. I also offer a 100% guarantee that your dog will be exactly what you want it to be when I train it and I will continue to work with the dog to reach that goal for as long as it takes. See how many other trainers will offer you that. I also offer many services that very few trainers offer. This is a testament to my experience. Those services are: Basic and Advanced Obedience, Behavior Counseling, Protection Training, Schutzhund Training, Explosives and Narcotics Detection, K-9 Security Services, Search and Rescue Training, Show Dog Handling and Training Seminars.

        About

The service I provide is dog behavior modification training. I am a professional woman who was a teacher for many years and very familiar with behavior modification practices. For 20 years, I have loved and taught my own pups and would like to pass that knowledge to you. Each dog is unique, so sometimes what will work for one will not work for another. Though we love and cherish our dogs, we may be giving them wrong cues without even realizing. There are hundreds of 'dog behaviorists' who will instruct you do X, Y, and Z and say everything will be fine. Some of their methods will work with some animals but not others. Training should be as natural as possible and doesn't have to be for long periods. Training never should be something that should stress the human or the dog. Change will come in its own time by a carefully laid, consistent training plan. What's important is to hone in on those key areas that are making your life and your dog's life stressful and being consistent in the training -- this means the whole 'family' is on the same page. After an initial evaluation, I will teach you the most important things to decrease your dog's anxiety, so you will live a much happier, less stressful life. Look forward to a much calmer and enriching lifestyle with your best friend.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How old should a puppy be for training?

Dog training shouldn’t wait until you’re having behavior problems. If you get a new puppy, start from the beginning with professional training to give both you and your puppy the tools you need for a healthy relationship. Dog training is as much about teaching the owner how to interact with their new dog as it is about the dog learning to behave. Puppy training can start as early as eight weeks old. Trainers who offer puppy training programs may works specifically with dogs between the ages of 8 and 18 weeks old. Trainers can teach owners about potty training and how to deal with accidents, working with separation anxiety, and training your pooch out of destructive behaviors like chewing, biting and demand barking. Puppies will start to learn to walk on-leash and other basic skills.

In addition to behavior training, socializing your puppy is an important part of dog training. Socializing your dog means they become comfortable and confident in a variety of settings and have a great foundation for becoming a well-adjusted adult dog. After your puppy has had the proper vaccinations, you can start to introduce it to a variety of different dogs and people in safe settings.

Which dog training method is best?

The best type of dog training for both you and your dog depends on the outcomes you hope to achieve. If you want your dog to learn agility training, go to someone who specializes in those techniques. Regardless of whether you want your dog to learn basic behavior or competitive-level tricks, the majority of dog training is actually about training the owner how to communicate with their dog. Most professional dog trainers agree that a model of training based on positive reinforcement breeds a happy, healthy, well-adjusted dog. The alternative to positive reinforcement training is using force or aggression techniques like physical punishment or shock-collar training to get the dog to do (or not do) a behavior. While the dog may learn how to behavior as you direct, it is also learning to communicate with force and aggression, and will in turn use those behaviors on other dogs (or people) that are smaller or weaker than it is. Before signing up with a dog trainer, meet with the trainer and ask for references. Watch the trainer interact with your dog, and make sure they treat your dog with patience and firm kindness. Ask them questions about their training methods:

        • What type of training methods do you use?
        • What is your background and training, and how did you become a dog trainer?
        • How long do you expect that we will work together before we achieve the results I’m after?

How long does it take to train a puppy?

Dog training depends on the dog and how much homework the dog owner is willing to put in. Puppy training is similar to dog training in that the onus of the work depends on the owner learning new ways to interact with their dog. For a quick crash course, you can opt for a single, two hour smart-start puppy training consultation to teach you the ins and outs of being a new dog parent. You can learn how to manage potty training and what to do if the puppy experiences separation anxiety. As long as you’re willing to work on dog training a little bit each day, your puppy will quickly learn these new behaviors. If you’re not confident about training your puppy yourself, you can enroll in a 6- to 8-week puppy training course, with weekly lessons touching on everything from bite control to obedience. Puppies usually need to be at least three months old for group training classes. If you want more intensive one-on-one work, you can opt for private lessons. Some behavior problems can be resolved in one session if the dog owner learns and can implement new skills. In the case of more serious issues, 3 to 10 private sessions can typically correct challenges.
