Tony is hands-down the best contractor we have ever worked with. He is trustworthy, responsive, and he does amazing work. A few months back, we found Tony on thumbtack. He and his team repaired a broken light fixture (electrical and dry wall repair). His price was fair, he came out almost immediately, the repair looked great, and we had a good experience. More recently, we started a kitchen backsplash project with another contractor who was recommended to us by a family member. There were red flags along the way, but we proceeded with the recommended contractor. At the end of their first day, they left our house covered in mortar and as the evening wore on, the tiles literally began sliding down the wall. We recognized the craftsmanship was terrible, but did not how to proceed. We didn't want to tear it down, but we didn't want the tiles to dry in the wrong place. Somewhat desperate, we remembered how professional Tony had been months prior, so we pulled out his number (at 9pm) and called him. We sent him photos of the wall and he talked us through what to do. We took down the tiles and washed them completely (so they could be salvaged and we wouldn't have to buy new material) per his instructions. He was positive, never insulting the other contractors, but clearly identifying where they had gone wrong, which instilled trust -- it was clear that by understanding how they went so wrong, he would do a much better job. We agreed on a price and he agreed to come out on a Wednesday. This was on a Monday. On Wednesday, he came out and immediately started reorganizing the tiles and prepping for the new installation. He had another tile installer come out; the installer who came out to work with him was a skilled tiler who showed photos of his work -- really beautiful work. We felt completely comfortable with them taking the lead and putting up the complicated backsplash pattern. Once they dove into their work, they realized that the tiles procured by the first contractors were not actually true squares so they recut ever single tile - 30 sq feet of tile! We were acutely aware of the fact that the job was actually far more difficult than it originally looked (via the photos we sent at 9pm)! However, Tony did not complain once about the additional work; he kept a great attitude and was really upbeat. My husband and I decided that the price we had initially agreed upon with Tony was not actually fair (it was too low) because the job was far more complicated than we had realized. I raised this with Tony and he stood by the fact that he had committed to a price and was going to do the job for that price and would not request any more money for the job. When we told him we felt it was necessary to pay more (the work is truly fantastic), he seemed to appreciate that we recognized how much work they were doing - literally hand cutting 30sq feet if tile- but again, he said he had committed to a price and wanted to be clear that he was not asking for any more money. Another great benefit about working with Tony is that he is great at organizing jobs. He perfectly sees the full picture/scope of work that needs to be done and he efficiently organizes the process. He is not one of those contractors who leaves the job site for multiple trips to Home Depot; he anticipates all his material needs and comes prepared. I cannot recommend Tony enough.

John was extremely knowledgeable and professional. He moved our wall TV and second tv to our new residence with ease and hid wires making it look appealing. John has other talents attractive to retired people that don't care to do work around the house. We are planning to have John do some plumbing installation as well as change some door locks in our new home. We have found a gem!

I had water damage to subflooring from door leaks. We needed the entire subfloor in the laundry room and a piece about 8' x 24" in our Family Room replaced, with Durock in the laundry so I could lay tile later. The laundry room had linoleum but the family room has 3/4" hardwood. I had enough leftover wood to replace what had to be torn out to get to the subfloor, so the crew did that as well. I was impressed by the quality of the work and the pride in workmanship. They determined the cause of the water leaks after removing the door casement in the laundry room which revealed that the wood under the door threshold was completely saturated with water and had been finding an outlet into the subfloor because it had not been properly wrapped with waterproofing material during construction. Although there was plastic wrapping under the wood, it only covered about 1/2 of the side exposed to the exterior of the house siding, which allowed water leaking in from the top to run down between the plastic and the wood- effectively trapping it there every time it rained. The crew fixed that by wrapping the new wood they put down correctly. There were a number of things like the above that occurred as the dug into the damage that had been done, but I feel confident that they removed everything that had been exposed to moisture and replaced it, but stuck to their quoted estimate for the job. Don't know if we should name our crew online, but ours deserves to be singled out. They worked until 9PM the first night and were back the next day to complete the job by the end of the afternoon. We'll certainly use them again the next time we need a help with a project. Jericho Croft Farm

2000SF roof replacement on 40 year old roof low sloped easy walk on roof. Carlos and crew of 6 did great execution job once on job. He made sure to provide all items he promised and provided extras beyond agree proposal. Winter caused a number of delays and understanding pro and cons before start was harder to pin down after good detailed initial proposal. Communication was a little shaky at times with all weather delays. Carlos will do a great roof job for you. Job is only week old and carlos insured if any issues for 3 years he will remedy. 25year plus Roofing warranties from GAF appears like really dont exist with out following all kinds of GAF protocols.

I contacted Mr. Guevara on Saturday for an estimate for the installation of a walkway and small patio. He and his crew began work Monday morning 30 minutes before the scheduled appointment time and Tuesday they were here 45 minutes early to meet the cement truck. They completed the job on schedule and to my satisfaction. I'm VERY pleased and will hire him again.

This is the epitome of a good small/local company. Curtis Home Improvements played a difficult role in our multi-faceted home renovation. We hired them to convert a large window to a set of french doors, build a large custom deck, abandon several electric base plate heaters, have granite counter tops installed in our kitchen, install a tile back splash in our kitchen, custom cut our cabinets and installed a wall mounted microwave, installed a dishwasher, and a sink disposal. They did all this while seamlessly allowing other contractors to come in install a new heat pump, pull up carpets and put hardwoods in one room, refinish hardwoods everywhere else, and my family to remove wall paper and paint throughout the house while I built a fence. In the process, we added on a few change orders: removing, repairing and placing new tile for a bathroom floor where we found some wet rot, skim coating areas on the drywall that were messed up from previous renovations or from removing wall paper. They performed this additional work without missing a beat, and at a fair cost. Everything looks great.

We had an out-building with a leaking roof. We decided to have the old shingles removed and get new ones put up when repairs were done. A-Plus came out and inspected the attic space to assess the damage. They submitted a detailed proposal with a very fair price. They said they could get to it in about 2 weeks and, even though we had a lot of rain those 2 weeks, they were able to meet the schedule. The roof is beautiful! We had a relatively small project but they treated it the same as a large one. I'll definitely go straight to them next time I need a roofing contractor.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What is a standing seam metal roof?

A standing seam metal roof may be a strong, durable, safe choice when you’re considering metal roofing installation options. A standing seam refers to the raised seam where the sheet metal roofing panels join. Traditionally, shingles and roof panels lie flush to the roof, making them more prone to rust or penetration by water at their seams. In a standing seam metal roof, the raised (or standing) seams run vertically from the roof ridge to the eaves, with no horizontal seams. In addition, the fasteners joining the metal panels together are concealed, providing even fewer opportunities for water or moisture to build up. The cost to install a standing seam metal roof will depend on the type of metal you select, the size of your roof, and the cost of roofing labor in your region. Materials will play a major role in your metal roofing installation costs. If you select standard galvanized steel, the cost per square (100 square feet) might be in the $150-$300 range, while a high-end choice such as copper or zinc could be between $1,000 and $1,500 per square. Here is one example of cost:

    • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.

Can a metal roof be installed over shingles?

Metal roofs are durable, environmentally friendly, safe and budget-friendly. If you’re considering an update, metal roofing installation doesn’t have to mean completely removing your old roof. In many cases, metal roofing can be installed over your existing shingles. Research building codes in your state, as many require that after two roofs have been installed, all roofing materials must be completely removed before a third roof can be put on. This protects your home’s structural integrity and your family’s safety. Carefully read contractor reviews and choose someone with extensive experience with metal roofing installation. One concern when installing metal over shingles is that over time, condensation can build on the shingles and cause the metal to rust. This will lead to rust around the panels, making them more likely to come loose in a storm. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000. The wide price range represents different roof sizes, different types of metal, and the cost of labor in different parts of the country — and can also include the cost of removing an old shingle roof prior to installing the metal. As a line item, the average cost of removing an old roof to prepare for installing a new roof, plus adding new roof decking, costs on average about $45-$75 per square (the pro roofer’s term for 100 square feet), depending on the pitch of the roof. Always make sure you have a clearly written contract and a warranty on both the labor and the metal.

How much does it cost for a metal roof?

Metal roofing installation is an attractive option thanks to metal’s long lifespan, hardiness and fire-retardant properties. Nationally, the average cost for metal roofing installation ranges from $6,000 to $20,000.There are different types of metal roofs, each with their own installation needs and materials costs. Roof size also affects your metal roofing installation costs, as do regional labor rates. Roof size is measured in squares; one square equals 100 square feet. Here are some examples of the average cost for a metal roof:

    • Standard metal roof: $120-$150 per square to start, including materials and labor
      • A 30-square roof (a 3,000-square-foot roof) could cost between $3,600 and $4,500 for a typical three-bedroom home.
    • Snap-Loc metal roof: $200-$225 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $6,000-$6,750.
    • Standing seam metal roof: $300 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000 or more.
    • Tuff-Rib metal roof: $250-$350 per square to start, including materials and labor.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $7,500-$10,500.
    • Mid-range metal roof package, including all accessories: $300-$500 per square.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $9,000-$15,000.
    • High-end metal roof package — such as zinc or copper — and all accessories: $1,000-$1,500 per square.
      • A 30-square roof could cost $30,000-$45,000.
