We were exceeding pleased with the work that EBRR Property Maintenance Services performed for us - a new driveway, walkway and garden wall. We also worked with Ed Bilo, he and the entire work staff were extremely professional, attentive to our ideas and a source of excellent advice. We will certainly use them for a variety of other lawn issues that we have in mind.

First, David is good about seeing a landscape and envisioning something creative that will look nice and be functional. But then his crew can execute his vision with precision! Loved what he did to my back yard. They put an extended blue stone porch outside of my screened sunroom. They also built a nice garden area with new walk way stones leading out to it and leveled the yard. Can't wait for the summer to take advantage of my new backyard!

I will say that the whole team work VERY hard and for a very fair price. Make sure that you understand what you're getting. I got a crew of very diligent and industrious landscaping workers, but there is not much design experience there. If you are supervising the work, they will do exactly what you want done and do it well. I would hire them again to do work at my house.

Ryan did a great job for me. He is incredibly knowledgeable & passionate about organic, sustainable gardening. It's rare to find someone who lives what they value but Ryan does! He is also generous with his knowledge...my neighbors on both sides of my house were asking him advice and he didn't hesitate to give them his insight I have an easy to manage garden that is going to feed myself, many friends and neighbors in the backyard and he even helped me with the flowers at the front of the house. He also knows a lot about trees! Hire this guy!

I hired P&P to give my townhome backyard a complete makeover. They were able to design a new backyard for me that stayed within my budget and solved all my problems. They completed the job very quickly and professionally. The thing I enjoyed the most was the responsiveness and communication to all my messages. I knew that I was dealing with professionals from the first interaction.

Mitch Lachin (M & L Landscaping) has been our landscaper for at least the past 15 years. He maintains our yard, has designed our current landscaping scheme, and prepares our yard for spring and winter. Over the years, we have been very pleased with Mitch and his team's work. His first job for us was to remove ground cover and seed a large area with grass a in an area where we had trees taken down. The grass did wonderfully, looks rich and survives to this day. He has successfully helped us over the years in landscape design and planting, helping us select plants that would be deer resistant (as much as plants can be deer resistant!) and low maintenance as well as pretty and colorful. It is always so exciting to return home that day in the spring when Mitch and his team has come to our house, cleaned up our yard and gotten us ready for spring! Everything always looks wonderful. We have asked Mitch to maintain our yard. He contacts us approximately once per month to let us know if anything needs to be done, and if so, what. Sometimes no work needs to be done, and sometimes quite a bit of work needs to be done! The end result is always a yard that meets our expectations. Mitch communicates very well with us, by phone, in person or via email. He always let's us know when he is coming and what he will do. If we have any issues or concerns, he promptly responds and addresses them. His team of workers is wonderful as well. They communicate to us what they are doing and are always neat and polite. We highly recommend Mitch and M&L Landscaping! They have served us well for many years!!!! Barb Ship

When we moved into our new house, the garden was a wasteland. All Outdoor Services worked with us to provide is with an excellent design, but also respected our wishes to use predominantly native plants. The highlight was the design of a fantastic fire pit as the focal point of the new garden. The execution of the project took place over just one weekend. The team was super friendly, knowledgeable and experienced. I highly recommend working with this company.

Jamie & Dan were easy to get in touch with. Jamie offered many great ideas for the design of my front flower beds and I went with one idea of shaping the beds and love it! Also gave me many options/quotes for the big project itself. In the end, I had them rip up all the old shrubs and trees then til, shape, and edge it. Two day job. I then got all the products (garden soil, mulch, plants etc.) and finished it myself (I preferred it this way). They even offered to help plant when I got everything! There was a tiny bit of miscommunication & a day of no-show but doesn't cloud the fact that I'm sooooooo happy that I have my "curb appeal" gardens :) Thanks Jamie & Dan!

I hired Adkins Landscapes for landscape maintenance around my home and lawn maintenance in my backyard. The lawn was in terrible shape and they brought the grass back to a beautiful rich thick green lawn. The team did a thorough spring cleanup and feeding/mulching of all landscaped beds in the back yard and just recently did an excellent job of expanding an older landscape bed in the side yard and planted a lovely new tree in the midst of it. The company is very personable in working with you to meet your needs, very knowledgeable in making recommendations, and has a high standard of quality in their work.

I hired Megan to do some landscaping for me in my townhome's small front and back yard. She gave me a very fair estimate and arrived promptly to start work. I left the design as far as planting to her and the design of the pavers I needed install in my back yard. I could not have been more pleased. She did an excellent job. My neighbors gave me compliments on the work she did in the front yard, and I would heartily recommend her to anyone who needs landscaping. She is a lovely young lady who works like a landside stevedor. She's great! I will certainly hire her again when I need more help in my yard.

We worked with Chris Limas (Owner) and his crew for some landscaping in the front and rear of our townhouse. Chris was extremely knowledgeable and was able to give us great design ideas for our home. He worked with us over a few months and we could not be happier with the end results. They truly know what their doing and take an enormous amount of pride in their work. Anyone who hires Potomac Outdoor Innovations will not be disappointed with the quality of work and customer service.

Guillermo and his Team hit the ground running on day 1. I was surprised at how much they were able to accomplish in just one day. The project consisted of re-painting kitchen cabinets from the wood/caramel color to white, repainting the kitchen ceiling on the first floor, painting the entire first floor and the hallway area on the second floor, repair and paint ceiling in guest bathroom, repair/paint ceiling in master bathroom, repair and paint ceiling in hallway, paint trims, install light fixtures, and wall-mount t.v. On the first day, the first floor ceiling was repaired/painted in its entirety and the first coat of paint applied to the entire first floor, stairway, and hallway on second floor. The cabinet doors were also removed on the first day. I said all of this to say that Guillermo and his Team are very skilled, professional, and efficient at their work. Guillermo provided a progress report at the end of each day to keep me informed on the work that was completed and the work planned for the next day. If there was anything that I saw that needed to be revisited, Guillermo would say ‘no worries, I will take care of it’. I am very PLEASED and HAPPY with the job that Guillermo and his Team did. I am beyond satisfied with the job that Guillermo and his Team completed. I am a very HAPPY customer! Friends and family who have came by to visit were so impressed with the renovations. They said things like “Wow- they did an amazing job” and “this place looks totally different-it looks so much more modern”. If you want to get the job done RIGHT and on TIME, I HIGHLY recommend Guillermo and his Team! You will not be disappointed!

I highly recommend Bill LeFave and his team at Audobon Landscaping. He recently provided fabulous design ideas and expert installation that completely transformed my small back yard. Features include a gorgeous paver patio, stone steps, 2 loose-laid stone walls, re-contouring for perfect water control, an irrigation system for the gardens, and lovely lighting. He also did a phenomenal job of cleaning up, pruning, and mulching my entire yard. Bill has great crews, and he supervises and works along with them on all stages of the project. I feel fortunate to have found someone with such knowledge, artistry, and skill to transform my yard. Besides that, he's delightful to work with, can give you terrific guidance about plants, and provides his services at a very fair price. Before we started, I saw his phenomenal work at the yard of a very satisfied customer. Now I am also one.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

      • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
      • Read online reviews of client experiences.
      • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
      • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
      • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

How much does it cost to landscape your front yard?

Prices for landscaping your front yard can range from a few hundred dollars to tens of thousands of dollars, depending on the scale of your front yard project. Your landscaping price will reflect how much change you implement, how much labor is required, and the cost of materials.

Landscaping is typically made up of softscaping and hardscaping. Softscaping refers to selecting trees, bushes, flowers and plants to achieve a desired aesthetic and to meet goals such as having a drought-tolerant yard. Hardscaping refers to moving earth, installing structures, and putting in decorative stonework, sidewalks or lighting. For softscaping, you may want to hire a landscape designer to consult on your plants and layout, and then do the digging and planting yourself or hire a gardner to handle the heavy lifting. A landscape designer’s hourly rate may range from $50 to $150 or more. If you want a turnkey approach, meaning someone who works with you to create the vision and then executes all the work, landscaping pricing will typically come down to a cost per square foot rather than an hourly rate. It’s a solid investment: Great landscaping can add up to 28 percent value to your home.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
