Anthony was top-notch. He wasn't the least expensive, but many times, especially on ThumbTack, I've learned you 'get what you pay for'. Anthony know his stuff when it comes to insulation and air sealing. This is what he specializes in. While he's not a "jack-of-all trades", he knows the insulation business very well and demonstrated that while working on our house.
Anthony knows his products and insulation types and does not push a particular brand or type on you. He understands your needs and tells you the pros and cons of each and lets you decide. The job was quoted to be a 3 day job. Since it fell over the new year (Jan. 1), he said they don't work on New Year's day and would be back on Jan. 2. After leaving our house on the 31st I went to the attic the inspect what they had done so far (removing old insulation and installing soffit baffles). I noticed a section of the return air supply was broken and the heat was venting into the attic. One of the workers must have accidentally leaned on it or something (not surprisingly; the other thumbtack member who put it in didn't do a very good job). I wasn't concerned, because we had already discussed having Anthony and his team properly connecting the return air supply line and properly air sealing the next day. I didn't mention it and figured I'd show him when he returned in two days, on January 2nd. During previous weeks while that part of the house was being renovated, we simply closed our bedroom door and used our space heater and left the main HVAC off. However, that night was the coldest night we had all winter and the space heater in the bedroom wasn't keeping up. The house needed to stay a certain temperature for our new born baby, but the temperature continued to drop and my wife wasn't happy. I turned on the main HVAC and suited up to go into the attic to figure out how to patch it up so all the heat wasn't just blowing into the attic. I sent a text message to Anthony around 11pm on Dec. 31 to tell him just to vent off after being hammered by my wife. He immediately replied and said he would be over ASAP (driving from Mananas to Alexandria!). I was quite surprised he would offer this, especially only an hour before the New Year's ball drop! I told him not to worry about it and that I could figure it out. I'm young and agile. He continued to tell me that he was coming, even though I told him multiple times that it really wasn't necessary. He was obviously concerned for us and the warmth of our new born. He showed up around 11:30pm and we went into the attic and patch it up and put in some support to keep it from happening again. Immediately, the house started to warm up and he rushed out around midnight. Sorry if you missed the ball drop and couldn't be with your family, Anthony! :-\ However, this experience goes to show how excellent he is and how much he truly cares about his customers.
I will now comment on the job itself:
First, he was always on time and at the house when he said he would be. The first part of the job was mostly done by his workers while he supervised. Once the old insulation was removed and soffit baffles were installed, he got more involved and started helping air seal before spraying the cellulose insulation. Don't take this comment the wrong way; I'm not complaining, just providing all the details. If I was him, I would let the workers do the unskilled dirty work as well!
Personally, I am very particular when it comes to energy efficiency, so I went into the attic multiple times to inspect the job while they were here and after they left. Each time, I was surprised to see how great of a job they did air sealing all the gaps and cracks with foam board and expanding spray foam.
They worked hard, full 6-8 hour days and even skipped lunch the first day! I made sure to get some pizza for them the second too days; what hard workers they are!
The final day was to finish the air sealing and spray the cellulose insulation. This day took longer than they expected but they stayed until the evening to get the job done but at the same time, they didn't rush through or cut corners.
Anthony also suggested two roof fans to be installed and referred me to his bother who has a roofing company. I ran the electrical before Anthony sprayed the insulation and his brother will be returning to give us a new roof and install the attic fans once we save up the money for this next project.
I will be inviting Anthony back in the future to air seal other areas around the house and spray insulation in the walls when we decide to replace our siding, but even with just the attic insulation, I can tell a drastic difference in how long the heat runs. But you have to remember, there is no point insulation your attic if you do not properly air seal it. Anthony and his team know this and they do the job right. To be honest, this is the best experience I've had on ThumbTack so far. Outstanding service and workmanship. Thank you again guys!
