Be very careful of what you click on, stay away from known bad sites by using a browser plug-in such as Web of Trust, don't click on email attachments unless you are expecting one from someone, and most of all, if a pop-up claims that you are infected, and offers a free scan, shut your computer down immediately and call for professional assistance.
