Fred was awesome to work with! He was quick to respond to all my questions, was flexible the day of when we asked if he could do another quick side job (installing an outlet), he did good quality work on installing my dishwasher and garbage disposal, and he was very affordable. The job required installation of several floor cabinets in a kitchen. On one side the cabinets were raised off the floor, mounted away from the wall, and a butcher block counter top cut and installed. On the other, sink side, a cabinet was installed and all cabinets on that wall were leveled to allow for installation of a counter top. The individual doing the job provided ideas on how to proceed and worked quickly to provide a quality product. He was willing to work around the clock to complete the installation and worked continuously while on site. I trust his judgement and his work ethic is above reproach. I would certainly recommend him for any job you may have.

My wife and a I asked Keith to come quote our project in Virginia Beach because we saw all of the positive reviews that other people have left. When we reached out to Keith, he was very responsive, and his price was fair. Keith showed up early to our home the day he said he would be there and was extremely friendly and professional. He had several great ideas that we hadn't thought of, and was ready to get to work as soon as possible. All of the lumber he brought and installed was straight, strong, and salt-treated. He sets the 4x4 posts two feet into the ground with concrete. The hardware he uses is powder-coated and heavy duty. About halfway through the job, we asked if Keith could also build a structure to hold a cord of firewood, and he was very accommodating and happy to change the scope of work on the fly- and was very reasonable with the price of the additional work. All in all, the completed project and experience with Keith exceeded our expectations. Keith proved himself as a self-directed, professional, and kind person to work with. The fence looks fantastic; we've even had neighbors compliment the job. If you're looking for someone you can trust to show up when they say they will, do a great job without you having to be there to make sure they're not taking advantage of you or going to screw things up, call Keith.

Michael Zaller is someone I am definitely going to hire again. He arrived on time and did the job as quoted and was a real pleasure to work with. We asked his advice on some other plumbing and remodeling projects and he discussed ways we could make improvements. Now I'm anxious to have him get started already!

Bordeaux Construction Services did an outstanding job on a water damage repair job for my currently leased home. I believe the price was just right especially for the quick response from Lee. The home had first floor drywall damage caused by a plumbing leak in the 2nd floor master bath. Lee contacted me within 30 minutes of my quote request on Thumtak.com and asked to take a look at the water damage to the property two days later, on a Saturday, in order to provide a quote for the repair. After confirming with the tenant, we solidified the time. I was so happy with the expedited response and his response to me in general on the website that I then explained the problem to the best of my knowledge. I wanted a single general contractor to take care of my problem! It is such a pain dealing with multiple contractors for a repair job. I asked if Lee would could find the leak, repair it and the damaged drywall. He told me he would definitely do his best to fix the problem but he really needed to look at it first. I authorized him to do what he could. When Lee showed up at the property on Saturday, he did just that. He removed the damaged drywall, inspected the master bath plumbing, troubleshot by testing the bathtub plumbing and found the leak. He repaired the plumbing on the spot. He explained to the tenant they needed to allow time for the water in the ceiling to dry and for the repair to cure. On Monday, he called the tenant and asked them to test the repair. All went well and he scheduled the drywall repair two days later. The ceiling is dry wall with knock-down plaster which can be extremely hard to match in the middle of the ceiling. The tenant was extremely happy with the workmanship. I couldn't be more happy with his efforts as a property owner who is currently deployed overseas. He turned a truly stressfull situation for myself and the tenant family into a total success. Thank you Lee!

I have worked with Mark Barrett, owner of Top Notch General Contracting for almost 10 years. He has basically redone my entire home...from exterior doors and windows, gutting and remodeling baths, removing a fireplace and reworking the roof, and much more! He has gutted and installed a brand new kitchen at my Mom's home and completed work at many of my real estate client's homes. Top Notch contractors are particularly excellent carpenters and drywall installers, but they can do any job you need. Mark is timely and does what he says he is going to do. If a subcontractor does not do a job right, Mark will redo it himself until you are satisfied. I will not work with anyone but Top Notch!

I originally spoke with Don concerning carpet installation but ultimately hired his company for 3 different jobs. His crew was prompt in performing the work and he was very professional each time I spoke with him. He kept me well informed of when he planned to complete a job, even when I was not required to be home. His pricing was very fair and the jobs exceeded my expectations. I will defintely be hiring Cavalier Enterprises for any future jobs I may have and I highly recommend him to others.

Richard was very easy to work with. He went above and beyond to ensure the job was done right and I am extremely satisfied. He made communication a breeze. I highly recommend him. His work is amazing and he takes pride in what he does.

Small repair job that Mr. Barker quoted from pictures and description. Real estate transaction punch list that included replacing a portion of exterior door frame and reinforcing two existing bannisters. Weather on the scheduled morning did not cooperate for the exterior work, but Mr. Barker communicated well with me and we found a time later in the day to start the work between rain showers so that I could stick to my timeline. The project turned out great and I would certainly hire Mr. Barker again.

So happy that we found Robert for our project . It was a tricky installation of bead board paneling in a sloped attic room, and also tongue and groove pine on a hallway ceiling. He does beautiful work and is also very punctual and good with communication and his price was fair! He worked hard in our house for six days and had a long commute to get here. I’m going to hire him again soon 😀because I have endless projects in my 100 year old house.

Work that was performed was done well and at a reasonable price. Some other project inquired about quoted rather high did not hire at this time for that project, originally quoted at a much lower price which was more like it then came back a few days later and almost doubled the cost. Very pleasant to work with would recommend but not for tile work to high.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much will it cost to fix a hole in the wall?

If you have a hole in your wall, don’t despair; drywall repair professionals can patch the hole and repaint the surface and no one will be the wiser. The cost to repair a drywall hole depends on the size of the surface area of the damage, the materials and labor required, and (for a minor repair) any minimum service fee the repair company may charge. The actual labor and drywall prices may be lower than the minimum service fee, but pros must ensure their business overhead costs are met when they go out on minor jobs. To help keep costs low once the pros get there, make sure you have the right paint on hand if you want them to do to a touch up after the repair is complete, so you don’t keep them wait (and charging you for their time) while you search in the garage. Here are two examples of average prices for smaller drywall repair jobs:

  • Approximate cost to repair a 5-foot crack in a wall: $125 (labor $75 and materials $50).
  • Approximate cost to repair a 3-foot ceiling crack: $150.

What is the difference between sheetrock and drywall?

People sometimes use the terms “sheetrock” and “drywall” interchangeably, but they are not exactly the same. Drywall is the industry term for prefabricated sheets of wall, while Sheetrock is the brand name of a type of drywall. Depending on what room is being built, your drywall installation pro will select different thicknesses or grades of drywall. Standard residential drywall is ½-inch thick. Garage walls adjacent to a living space are typically ⅝-inch thick and serve as a firewall. For a garage ceiling, most contractors will use firewall-grade drywall materials to keep your home as safe as possible.

Different types of drywall can be color-coded to indicate their purpose. Purple or green drywall boards are often mold-resistant (MR) and are applied where moisture tends to accumulate, such as in bathrooms and basements or behind tile backsplashes at sinks. These mold-resistant sheets have a fiberglass instead of a paper facing finish to prevent water absorption. Regular drywall is gray or white. The drywall industry is constantly adapting with technology to provide safer and more targeted materials. You can even install soundproofing drywall to help prevent noise transfer through rooms.

How much does it cost to put up drywall?

The national average cost to hire a drywall installation professional ranges $375-$1,500, depending on the job at hand and where you are in the country. Your drywall installation cost will often be lower if the professional is installing the drywall in a new construction with open access as opposed to a remodel. The square footage of the job, the amount of materials, and the labor required also determine drywall prices. According to drywall pros, materials costs can range from 15 percent to 50 percent of your total project cost, depending on the work you’re having done. Request several quotes from drywall installation companies to find the right fit for your construction project. The quotes may be based on the company’s standard cost per square foot or a calculation of the time estimated to complete the job plus the size of the job plus materials and any travel fees. For example, drywall installation for one or two standard-size rooms could cost $900-$1,500. The cost to hang and tape an outbuilding with approximately 40 drywall sheets at 75 cents per square foot could total $1,450, including 3.75 days of labor for the drywall crew.

How much does it cost to repair drywall?

The national average price range to repair drywall is $210-$300. Drywall prices can vary greatly depending on the size of the hole or crack that needs repair, the amount of materials required, and other factors. Cracks can appear at the seams in your drywall due to uncontrollable factors like your house settling or even minor earthquakes. Drywall, although sturdy, will break with enough impact, so if a dresser falls and crashes into a wall or your have a mishap hammering in nails for artwork, you could need drywall repair. Drywall repair professionals may have a minimum service fee of $100-$150 regardless of the size of the job. This ensures that their business expenses are met anytime they send their crew out to a job. Here are some additional examples of average drywall repair prices:

  • Sand and texture five wall patches: $200 (45 minutes of labor and $40 of materials).
  • Repair a 4x8 section of wall: $225 (labor $150 and materials $75).
  • Replace drywall in an entire bedroom: $1,500 (price varies depending on the number of windows, whether there’s metal trim, etc.).
