I would highly recommend Rae's Masonry for a project at your home or business.  When I called about an estimate,  Mr. Rae personally came to my home to assist me in designing my project, which consisted of repairing/replacing the bricks and slate on my front porch; building new steps and a walkway; and putting cobblestone pavers aside my driveway.  His estimate was very reasonable; which helped me stay within my project budget.  My neighbors were impressed by the craftsmanship and speed of his workers' performance. The brick masons were professional and and courteous by keeping the onsite materials organized and cleaned up their work area. They used quality materials that will keep my home looking beautiful for years to come. Masonry construction may be a lost art form to some,  but i believe it adds a classic, authentic feel to a home. Masonry unequivocally is the best choice for any home because it never goes out of style.  When I visited Shade and Wise Brick Company to choose my bricks, the representatives spoke highly of my contractor and said that Rae's Masonry would do a great job on my project. This gave me an extra comfort that this company would do a great job! Give Rae's Masonry a chance to turn your vision into reality!

We began working with Patrick at Studio Z almost 18 months ago, asking him to bring our full kitchen and other home renovation ideas to a reality. Patrick developed a beautiful plan for us! He and his team have been professional and responsive throughout the process, even as delays on our end waylaid progress for awhile. We would engage Studio Z's services again for future projects and highly recommend to those considering a home renovation that requires architectural services. Thank you!

We had a Mechanical room that was just a storage area. I needed more room to prep food and store all my extra plates and serving peices. My dream was to have a Butlers Pantry that would suit my needs and Chris Fisher of Creative Design Homes did just that. He took my needs and turned them into the most wonderful room to work in, I have floor to ceiling cabinets to store extra large peices and my dessert glasses, which I have 13 shelves full of different sizes and shapes, all sit perfectly so I can take a tray of 8 or 12 glasses at one time. The upper & lower cabinets are also designed to meet all my needs. He built me a seperate closet to house other books, coffee urns etc.... We worked with Chris for approximately 2-3 months he was very professional he procured all permits nothing was done without permits and all was up and beyond code, time including waiting for cabinets to be made and special sink to come in, inspections to be done. He took the time and effort to make my work space set apart from others with attention to the tinest details. The people he brought into our home were true professionals they respected out home and took care not to damage anything. All in all it was a wonderful experience. Before Chris was finished we had another smaller project for him, I knew if I would have waited on this someone else would snatch him up, in my laundry room there was wasted space we designed a cabinet with pull out shelves for my pots which also go from floor to ceiling. He is a very respectful man with a big heart and wonderful ideas and he listens.... and creates the most beautiful rooms ... he is very methodical, his measurements are precise ... he may take a little more time but the end results you will not be disappointed, they are wonderful. I would recommend and use Creative Homes Design without hesitation.

In the 30 years I have been in the commercial and residential construction industry, Larry has been one of my favorite architects to work with. I have known and worked with Larry for over 10 years. His attention to detail and delivering what the client wants is second to none. Larry is always using the latest design technologies in his work. My favorite is where he takes a photograph of where the structure is to go and comes back with a photograph that now includes the structure and you would swear it's already there it looks that real. It doesn't matter if it's grass lot, busy commercial corner or body of water that needs a boat house. Larry will show you exactly what it will look like before the first shovel of dirt has been moved. I won't say he's the best, but I consider him one of the best. I highly recommend Larry for any type of work whether it's a boat house, custom home, commercial or industrial building. He can design them all to your complete satisfaction.

Steve was excellent. Had him replace a siding piece that came off during high winds. He was so fast to respond that I asked him to re-stain my front entry door. Both jobs came out great. I will definitely call him again!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do architects work?

Architects may work for an architecture or engineering firm, they may work for a government organization, they can work for a construction company, or they may be self-employed (freelance). The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics explains that architects spend a large amount of their working time in the home or company office: meeting with clients; creating reports and architectural drawings; and working with other architects and engineers. When not in an office, an architect is often at the construction site either as part of the development of plans or to ensure building progress is following the blueprint.

When a client interacts with an architect, it is typically to have them design drawings for the construction of a house or a building. If you are a client who has hired a large architecture firm, there may be a team of people working on your design. But if you are working with a freelance architect or a smaller firm, one person (or a small group) will take your concept and translate it into an architectural blueprint that a builder can use to construct a house. The plans will lay out everything from the depth of the foundation to the materials to use to the type of metal to be used in the reinforcement. Once the plans have been created and handed off to the builder, the architect may remain on the project — depending on budget — and oversee progress.

How do architects charge for their services?

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, the median salary of an architect in 2016 was $76,930. This range included architects with every type of company as well as self-employed architects. Depending on the architect and whether they’re with a firm or independent, they may charge per hour or by the square foot, or they may charge a percentage of the total budget for a construction project. An hourly rate is typically used for smaller projects such as providing consultation, helping clients hone their concept before the design process begins, or drafting documents and plans. If an architect is working on an hourly basis on a larger project, there will usually be an agreed-upon cap on the number of hours they will work. For larger projects, such as new construction or total overhaul remodels, architects may charge a percentage of the total construction costs. The architect will usually set the percentage you will pay after the total cost of construction has been accounted for. Percentages can range within a firm depending on the extent of the services they’re providing. For example, a lower percentage of the total construction costs may include drafting and minimal consultation and guidance along the way, while a higher percentage could include on-site project management services with every detail attended to. Architects may also charge by the square footage of the project. The rate per square foot can vary depending on the individual’s training, the services they are providing, the complexity of the project, and other factors — such as obtaining permits. The national average cost to hire an architect is between $1,690 and $2,500.
