My front lawn was a big mound with the remains of an old pine tree in the middle. Land levelers removed the old stump and decaying root system and corrected the grade with respect to the sidewalk and driveway. Finally seeded for a new lawn. All done in a timely manner.

My wife and a I asked Keith to come quote our project in Virginia Beach because we saw all of the positive reviews that other people have left. When we reached out to Keith, he was very responsive, and his price was fair. Keith showed up early to our home the day he said he would be there and was extremely friendly and professional. He had several great ideas that we hadn't thought of, and was ready to get to work as soon as possible. All of the lumber he brought and installed was straight, strong, and salt-treated. He sets the 4x4 posts two feet into the ground with concrete. The hardware he uses is powder-coated and heavy duty. About halfway through the job, we asked if Keith could also build a structure to hold a cord of firewood, and he was very accommodating and happy to change the scope of work on the fly- and was very reasonable with the price of the additional work. All in all, the completed project and experience with Keith exceeded our expectations. Keith proved himself as a self-directed, professional, and kind person to work with. The fence looks fantastic; we've even had neighbors compliment the job. If you're looking for someone you can trust to show up when they say they will, do a great job without you having to be there to make sure they're not taking advantage of you or going to screw things up, call Keith.

When I hired Bordeaux Construction I was surprised they could get to my driveway as quick as they did. It was a very large 2 car drive way and they had to use a Bobcat to dig it out to set the forms. There was minimal damage to the yard. The following day they poured the concrete. They are a professional crew and got the job done very fast. They also had to take down some fencing and re- install it afterwards. My yard went from grass and dirt to concrete in almost 48 hours. Simply amazing I saved over $500.00 over the other estimates I received. The price was excellent and the work virtually flawless. I would recommend them for any concrete work. They also do many other things around the house as well. You cannot go wrong with this company. I also check with the licensing board and the better business bureau they have no complaints in 13 years of business. Thumbs up.

My driveway project did not start on the “official” start date due to the abundance of rain the Hampton Roads area had been experiencing during the month of May. Mr. Tim Lathan (Majestic Concrete Construction LLC) and I were in constant contact even though my start date kept getting pushed by the rains. When a window of opportunity finally opened, Mr. Lathan and his crew arrived at the appointed day and time and quickly began working. Just as I did with Mr. Lathan, I found his crew to be a highly knowledgeable and possessed a desire to ensure that I (the customer) got whatever I wanted to get the job done. Progressing through the first day of work, their plan was to prep my side driveway and pour concrete later in the day but guess what happened….MORE RAIN! After the rains finally left our area, Mr. Lathan and his crew worked majestically and created a final product that exceeds my initial desire. I am totally satisfied with my final product. I will definitely hire MAJESTIC CONCRETE CONSTRUCTION LLC for a future project.

I wanted a receptacle installed for my pool. I am an Engineer and 99% of all my work in my home I complete myself. This does save me money, but mostly it is because I take more PRIDE in my own work then other "Contractors" would. THIS WAS NOT THE CASE with Start to Finish. They customized every aspect of the job to tailor to my needs & wants. As they were working if they found an existing discrepancy with my home (built in 65) they notified me about it but did not try to push to add it to the bill or come back and they could "Hook me up." Absolutely PROFESSIONAL and if I need any work in the future that I may feel a little out of my realm for they will be the ONLY ones that I call. Jesse C.

Jerry and his team did an excellent job removing the compacted gravel and dirt from my backyard. Also, he added soil and seed, trimmed a tree in the front lawn, and fixed ruts in the grass adjacent to the driveway. I’m very pleased with the work!!

Mr. Morales provided excellent work and service on our 24ft x 20ft concrete patio installation at our home this past week. This is our 4th and best slab to date using different concrete contractors. He and his company were a pleasure to deal with and we are completely satisfied with our new patio. My wife and I highly recommend using his company.

Tim was excellent. Very professional and flexible which was great considering my wife is a teacher and I am in the military. We had a wood deck removed and a concrete patio laid in it's place. He came out, gave me estimate on a Sunday, and the next day tore up our wood deck and the next week the job was done due to the weather. Patio looks excellent. He and his partner, which I believe is his brother, spent about 13 hours laying down my patio which shows of dedication, attention to detail and making sure the job gets completed as discussed. I would absolutely recommend them, and hire them again.

Tidewater Regional Contracting checked all of our boxes. As we live in Sandbridge, careful consideration was given to our choice of roofing contractors, as we are vulnerable to extreme weather conditions...especially high winds. As our roof was 17 years old, with many vents and many peaks, knowledge, experience, professionalism, great communication, quality work, and accessibility were key and Tidewater Regional Contracting delivered. We recommend them highly and would definitely use them again.

Eddie and his team did a fabulous job on replacing our concrete driveway and new sidewalk. He answered all of our questions and stayed true to every detail of the job as promised. They were able to remove the old driveway in one day, poured the new one the next day and came back on the third day to remove the forms and clean up the jobsite. Eddie and his team were knowledgeable, professional and very efficient in completing the work. We highly recommend using Mastercrete & Sons for any concrete job needed!

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good concrete contractor?

Concrete contractors pave driveways, build foundations for homes, install retaining walls, create hardscaping for front and back yards, build concrete steps, and so much more. When searching for a driveway contractor, read reviews from previous customers and ask for referrals. Ask the contractor for photos of examples of their work that’s similar to what you want. Confirm they will get the proper permits so your driveway is up to code. Hiring a driveway contractor to install concrete can average $5-$6 per square foot, or more, depending on where you live, the slope and grade of the driveway site, and regional labor costs. For a new asphalt driveway, the cost could average from $3-5 per square foot. A standard concrete driveway of 500 square feet averaging $5-$6 per square foot would cost $2,500-$3,000 — so it pays to research someone who will do quality work. Excavation and grading work can increase your cost per square foot significantly. Ask whether the contractor provides a materials and labor warranty for their work. Some cracking of the concrete may occur as it settles, but you should talk with your contractor about any structural or aesthetic concerns you have. When hiring a concrete contractor, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

How much does it cost to redo a concrete driveway?

Replacing or renovating a damaged or time-worn asphalt or concrete driveway can boost your curb appeal and add to your home value. If your concrete driveway is nearing 20 years or more, it may be wise to invest in an entirely new driveway, instead of redoing your current one. Asphalt driveways average 15-20 years of life, so if you start needing major repairs around the 15 year mark, weigh the pros and cons of repairing or replacing it. Request bids from two to three driveway contractors to determine pricing and project scope, and check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack. Here are some examples of average costs:

      • The national average cost to hire a concrete specialist is $2,750, but that price can vary greatly depending on the work needed to repair and resurface your concrete driveway, the square footage of the project, current costs of concrete, and regional labor rates.
      • Driveway contractors average $2-$3 per square foot to smooth and resurface your asphalt driveway.
      • Resurfacing concrete driveways averages $3-$10 per square foot. Pricing can depend on repairs needed, project size and geographic location.
      • Nationally, the average cost for resurfacing a 500-square-foot driveway ranges from $2,000 to $5,000.
      • Sealant for a concrete drive can cost $20-$80 per gallon.
      • Sealant for an asphalt drive averages 25 cents per square foot.

      What do paving contractors do?

Paving contractors can be hired to install a concrete or asphalt driveway at your home, office or property. They can also repave an asphalt or concrete driveway that has been damaged by time, weather or heavy loads. When you are looking for a driveway contractor, request quotes from at least three professionals who are in good standing and have great customer reviews. They should do a site visit and write you a bid, detailing the work involved, materials needed, approximate length of the project and estimated cost.

The site for your new driveway will determine costs and the work required for your contractor. First, the ground must be excavated to lay a clear path. This means removing any trees, bushes and stumps. Next, the driveway contractor will grade the area, making a level surface for the concrete or asphalt. To ensure proper drainage, driveway contractors should install a sub-base of compacted gravel (or similar) 4 inches-8 inches deep, depending on your soil type. Then the concrete or asphalt may be poured and smoothed over the top. Your driveway contractor should recommend an appropriate sealant for your climate and advise you on curing time.
