HVAC installation with replacement of all Air Ducts. The total installation took two days. JDM technicians kept us informed as to what they expected to accomplish each day. In the beginning JDM was most helpful in assisting us determining the correct size HVAC for our home. JDM's workmanship is of the highest caliber with their installation charge very reasonable, beating out most of the local larger HVAC companies. We can highly recommend JDM. My only regret is the lack of photos to post, I apologize for that.

Carroll added a dryer exhaust vent and washer/ dryer outlet to my parents house. You always worry about getting someone you don't know to come do work for you, even worse when it's your parents house. He quickly provided me a quote, replied to my questions and comments and did the work on a holiday day. He showed up on time and knocked the work out within a couple of hours. Much faster than I expected. His pricing was also very good. Thanks to him my parents laundry issues were solved efficiently. I will use him again if there are any additional electrical issues that requires an expert.

I called Mike to inquire about his services and to find out when he could come out. He answered the phone right away and was able to come out the same night! He came in, described all the serivces provided and worked with me on pricing for carpet, furniture cleaning and vent cleaning. They even did the cleaning the same night!! I have never had a company do such a thorough job!! I have used the big name companies before and my carpets were never cleaned as well as what Mike and his son did. They were outstanding. I have already passed his information on and will only call Mike for future cleanings. They were outstanding!!

Greg and company came out on time to give me an estimate. They spent over an hour checking out all of the duct work under my house before giving me a price for replacement. Their price was fair and competitive. They completed the entire job in 3 days and did an excellent job . I highly recommend them and will use them again in the future.

Quality Handyman Services (QHS) did an excellent job remodeling my kitchen and adding a half bathroom downstairs. My house was built in 1918 so there were a few surprises along the way but Jeremiah didn’t skip a beat. He was able to do all of the work himself with the exception of the electrical wiring update necessary. Jeremiah updated plumbing and ran new for the new location of the dishwasher and the new bathroom. He also installed all of the new plumbing fixtures in both the bathroom and kitchen including the garbage disposal. Jeremiah did all of the demo and removed all of the debris. He did everything from replacing rotten floor joists to taking out a support wall and building a new support beam to open the kitchen up to the dining room. He put in hardwood floors, framed an alcove for the refrigerator and a utility closet/pantry. I formerly had to keep my pantry items in the closet that housed the washer/dryer. He moved the w/d upstairs and when I saw how big the closet actually was, I asked if he could turn it into a bathroom. He did it! No more climbing the stairs 4-5 times a day to use the bathroom!!! I also had him install new cabinets and all new appliances including an over-the-range microwave that required the exterior wall to be opened to vent to the outside. He moved and removed two cast iron radiators, installed a new sliding glass door to my patio, exposed the original brick to make a backsplash, built a support wall for a bar looking into the new kitchen from the dining room. I had new lights, switches and outlets installed too. It was a huge undertaking and Jeremiah made it as painless as possible. I am having QHS replace my porch light, repair my gate and build a cover over my back porch this summer! I highly recommend QHS. You can’t beat their prices! Sincerely, Amy Owens (804) 938-1277

We were very happy with Jensen Mechanical! Our house in the mountains did not have central air or heat or the associated duct work. The company looked at a number of ways to try to help us. They ended up building duct work throughout the house so we could get central air and heat.

We had to cut holes in our ceiling drywall to fix a leaky pipe, move a ceiling light fixture, and to replace a fan vent. Guan came in to fix the large holes we left in the drywall. When he left, it was like new. Literally. Guan is punctual, soft spoken, and professional. He brought plenty of drop cloths but I don't think he needed them, as he caught every drip in his catch tray. The ceiling repairs required two separate times to work to allow for the joint compound to dry, and he took his time on each occasion to make sure the job was done right. On a previous occasion, we had hired Guan to drywall the entire basement that we were finishing. He did an excellent job and was not the most expensive quote we got for that job, either. It's not often that you remember the name of the guy who does your drywall, and I am happy I remembered Guan Price. He's a good guy who does good work for a reasonable price.

Although our first appointment was missed due to them having a job last longer than expected, they were able to reschedule the following day. Once at the house, they diagnosed the problem with ease and were able to fix the issue and provide a quote on the spot. They also went above and beyond by checking other vents in the house to make sure we had the best set up for air flow. We were pleased with their professionalism and knowledge and ability to explain the issues to us. We will use them again in the future!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Do you need to clean your air ducts?

Air duct cleaning is done by heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) professionals. The pros use industrial-strength, truck-mounted vacuums and powerful brushes and hoses to clean inside the metal ducts that make up your forced air heating and cooling system. The Environmental Protection Agency recommends duct cleaning if there is “substantial visible mold growth inside hard surface ducts, ducts that are infested with vermin such as rodents or insects, or ducts that are clogged with excessive amounts of dust and debris and/or particles are actually released into the home from your supply registers.”

You should also have air ducts cleaned after recent water contamination or water damage to prevent mold; after renovations or remodeling to ensure debris and dust didn’t settle in the vents and ducts; if you are having problems with allergies or asthma; or when you are moving into a newly purchased home, especially if the previous owners smoked or had pets. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) recommends getting your air ducts cleaned every three to five years, or every two to three years in regions where homeowners use their air conditioning and heater for many months of the year, while the EPA suggests homeowners have duct cleaning done as needed.

How often should you get your air ducts cleaned?

How often you should clean your air ducts depends on your situation. If you or someone in the home has asthma or is acutely allergic to certain airborne materials or pollen, regular duct cleaning may be helpful. The Environmental Protection Agency doesn’t have an official position on the necessity of air duct cleaning unless the ducts have been contaminated by rodents, insects or mold, or you are aware of particles blowing out through the vents. The EPA recommends you have your air ducts cleaned on an as-needed basis. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association (NADCA) suggests having air ducts cleaned every three to five years.

Be cautious with companies that offer “whole house air duct cleaning,” urges the NADCA. The company may be using unscrupulous tactics to upsell you once they get started. Before any work begins, always clarify in writing what the job entails and what the cost will be. To protect yourself against fraud, read customer reviews and verify that your HVAC cleaning service has applicable licenses and certifications.

How much does it cost to replace air ducts in a house?

If your air ducts have been damaged, you’ll need to replace them. The national average air duct replacement cost is $150-$280, which may not include materials. Factors such as duct material, labor, location of ducts and linear feet of ductwork will all affect your final costs. Labor costs will vary based on how accessible the ducts are and what material your ducts are made of. The least expensive duct material is a flexible, non-metallic ducting that costs approximately $1-$2 per linear foot. Flexible aluminum is generally more expensive and stronger than non-metallic ducting. Stainless steel ducting is the strongest, the least flexible (meaning installing it typically has higher labor rates), and usually the most expensive. An average price for air duct replacement could range between $35 and $55 per linear foot, including basic materials and labor. A typical single-family home has 6-10 duct runs; replacing or installing one duct run could average $150-$250 for labor.

How long does it take to get your ducts cleaned?

The amount of time air duct cleaning takes can depend on how extensive your duct system is, how old your air ducts are, and whether they have ever been cleaned. On average, expect a standard size home (between 2,000 and 3,000 square feet) to take 2-5 hours for one to two technicians to clean. Here are the proper protocol and equipment you should expect from a professional duct cleaning service, as recommended by the Environmental Protection Agency:

    • All doors and access ports opened to ensure the entire duct system is inspected and cleaned.
    • Thorough system inspection prior to cleaning to identify possible asbestos-containing materials. If asbestos is present, specially trained and equipped contractors must do the removal.
    • Use of approved vacuum equipment that exhausts particles outside of your house. If the vacuum exhausts inside your home, it must be HEPA equipment.
    • Furnishings and carpet covered and protected.
    • Soft-bristled brushes only on fiberglass duct board and sheet metal ducts internally lined with fiberglass.
    • Ductwork properly protected.
    • Adherence to guidelines and practices set down by the National Air Duct Cleaners Association.

How much does it cost to have your air ducts cleaned?

If you’re concerned about dust, allergens or mold, it may be time to have your air ducts cleaned. The national average cost for air duct cleaning ranges from $190 to $250. Air duct cleaning costs will vary based on a number of factors such as your location in the country, the age and condition of your air ducts, the number of linear feet to be cleaned, and any repairs your ducts may need. HVAC cleaning companies should clearly outline what is included in their services and at what rate, so always make sure you understand and have a written agreement before work begins. Here are some examples of average air duct cleaning costs:

    • Tiered pricing for different levels of service:
      • Standard cleaning: $100, which may include truck-mounted industrial vacuums, high-pressure air wands and air snakes to clean all supply and return vents, branch lines, and main trunk lines.
      • Advanced cleaning: $200, which may include standard cleaning services, plus rotobrush or viper clean sweep in the main trunk lines.
      • Ultimate cleaning: $400, which may include advanced cleaning, plus insertion of a viper microline into all vents to force debris down the branch lines and into the main trunk lines, to be handled by the viper clean sweep. Typically, all ductwork surface is contacted, before-and-after photos are provided, and the furnace is cleaned.
    • A flat rate for unlimited vents: $289.
    • Additional fees for larger houses: $20 for each additional 500 square feet over 2,500.
Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
