Overall, Tony did good work for a very fair price (lower than several other estimates). I hired Tony for a very budget kitchen remodel. We didn't change flooring or layout, but took down a wall and soffits, rearranged upper cabinets, installed butcher block counters and bead board paneling in multiple areas, built some open lower shelving, added in canned lights and undercabinet lights, and completed lots of other finishes. In some ways, Tony absolutely went above and beyond - he searched Habitat for Humanity Restore for counter top deals while we were trying to determine the best counter type, he sourced great corbels off craigslist, he reinvented one of our upper cabinets by adding nice shelving to the side, and his communication was fabulous the entire process. Tony would always answer phone calls, send texts, and send along progress via pictures, which I really, really appreciated. But, there are definitely a couple of critical, irreparable errors, that could have been avoided with better foresite. He installed my undermount sink as an overmount without asking and now it cannot be fixed (they tried a couple times to fix it but the cut of the counter wasn't clean enough to make it work). And he was supposed to use some flooring that was going to be covered up by open shelves to repair flooring from the wall removal but he forgot to get the floor out before the shelves were built. He did find a floor that is a decent match but it's not perfect. There are also some attention to detail issues (quick/sloppy painting on cabinets, nails not covered on bead board, countertop seams not very tight, etc). But I'm also admittedly SUPER picky, so I think these are forgivable since Tony really did try to fix all of these things. In the end, I am super happy with my kitchen, and while it's not perfect, it is one million times better than before and still a great outcome for the price.

John did a great job doing a number of varied projects including hanging a large, heavy mirror and TV. He also masterfully installed another TV into a complicated piece of furniture. I would certainly recommend him to anyone.

I worked with John directly to replace my front porch flooring and rotted joist. He was quick to provide a quote and stuck to his number, while still remaining flexible to the project's needs. His crew was timely, efficient and friendly. We are thrilled with the finished product, I highly recommend Service One for your carpentry needs.

I highly recommend BabaBrown. Joseph does quality work with attention to detail. I hired him to widen a door with a pocket, which was not possible. His recommendation of a sliding style door was spot on. The end result was stunning. I consequently hired him to install bamboo flooring in the master bedroom, closet and hallway, and paint the rooms. He also removed carpet from the staircase, finished the steps and installed a runner. All of these tasks were done in a timely, professional manner. If you own a home, you'll need BabaBrown.

We had a total of 4 bathrooms done including a complete master bathroom remodel as well as having the flooring in our master bedroom completely redone. These were not simple projects as we added rain showers, body jets, not only in our master but even to our upstairs shared bathroom. In our master bathroom a brand new jacuzzi tub installed, we had vented ceiling fans added even in bathrooms that never had anything there before. In order to get that kind of project complete you basically have to trust the people that are employed because you can't be in the house 24 hours a day. We were so comfortable with his staff that we basically just left the front door open all day and they would come and go and do work. Extremely nice guys, hard-working, I was 100% comfortable having them in the house even with a pet and teens. Anytime you have a project there are going to be issues that come up, a lot of times things may be found once a renovation starts, or maybe something needs to be changed Etc. Every single time I asked and brought that to the attention of Nilson the answer was always "no problem, we'll fix it" and it was fixed. I've added photos as best I could but it really doesn't do any justice to the level of workmanship. I also waited a little while before leaving a review to see if any issues arose and everything has been absolutely perfect. Honestly, if I ever have any work that needs to be done I'm going to work with Nilson, getting ready to have a window repaired here and will let them do the work. The other thing is you can tell they enjoy what they do. They always had a smile on her face. If you ever want to talk live go ahead and get my number from Nilson I'm happy to provide a personal reference.

We had attic/chimney work, lighting and drywall done. Mr. Noblin was efficient, courteous and professional. His work exceeded our expectations. He showed up when he said he would and detailed what he would do before and during the job. We will call on his company again for other work and highly recommend him.

On time, did a good job, provided some extra touches that saved me a lot of time. Did a turnkey job and replaced everything he moved out of the room. I will now recommend him to anyone for sheet vinyl installation. He is the right combination of professional and friendly, and after hearing a bit about his background, I'm certain he can do a great job on any flooring job he's offered.

My wife and I bought our circa 1947 cape cod knowing that our floors would need to be refinished and decided to bite the bullet this fall in preparation for Thanksgiving. After providing some project details on Thumbtack we received multiple bids from multiple contractors. James of 804 Floors was not only the first to respond but appeared to be fairly priced (providing a ball-park price range), the most detailed, knowledgeable and very professional. He was able to set up a free estimate at our earliest convenience and we scheduled a full refinishing of our house floors and staircase to begin a week and a half later. James and his team were supportive and informative through every step of the process from initial planning to finished product. He was responsive to any and all questions my wife and I had and involved us in every stage. They went above and beyond just sanding and refinishing including patching imperfections, fixing sagging boards, refinishing thresholds, and even applying multiple sample swatches of stain for us to select from. These guys know their craft and their knowledge definitely shows in the final product and process. From explaining characteristics of our specific wood type, to differentiating poly vs water-based urethane to the physical sanding, staining, and sealing, James and his team are pros; he was even able to recognize the type of base moulding the former owners had used as “Scotia” - something only someone w/ a history of woodcraft or flooring would know. They were able to revive our original white oak flooring which was last finished decades ago even removed what we thought to be the toughest stains and bleaching. Thank you for giving our floors a new life and the Rosewood color looks like a million bucks! To say my wife and I are pleased would be an understatement. Would highly recommend to anyone and everyone in the Richmond area for your wood flooring needs.

As a contractor myself, this was the first time hiring this contractor as a sub to refinish floors in a very short time period. The owner himself performed this work and the quality was excellent. I am very pleased as he had the burden of working around my crew for other items and still managed to finish very quickly with excellent quality work. I have already saved his number and you should too! Thank you sir, for such great service. I really do appreciate it!

Nick is an experienced tile man. My florida room entailed using a leveling compound on a concrete floor about 150 sq ft. Nick had no problems and the finished ceramic tile floor turned out great. Nick was on site when he told me he was coming and we hit it off great, I was home watching through most of the project. Because of all the rain we've had Nick made sure the leveling compound was dry before setting the tile so it took about 3 extra days. Great joy, I'd use him again.

Mr. Miller and his crew were hired for numerous projects at my home located in Fredericksburg Va. They completed these projects I requested in a timely manner and worked within my budgets. The flooring work they completed was very professional and the drywall/painting work transformed my living room. I would definitely hire Labor Only again for upcoming projects I need. Happy to find a verified contractor, thank you thumbtack 😀 Scott J.

Shawn tiled my kitchen and foyer after a water loss. The flooring looked amazing and Shawn ensured the job site was clean prior to leaving it. He is friendly, caring, and trustworthy. I had no problems allowing his team to work on the site while I was absent. Follow up was great, and I've since hired him for other jobs. Great work all around!

Drew did very good tile work on my kitchen backsplash. In getting to know him, I found out he is quite a handyman, with various skills. He is a excellent carpenter, does good drywall work, and just about anything you need help with. I ended up hiring him to installing new quarter round on our flooring and patching some holes from leaks and he did excellent drywall work. Would use him again for future work! He's a nice, hard working guy too.

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does it take to install a hardwood floor?

Hardwood floor installation can take anywhere from a few days to more than two weeks, depending on demolition, wood type, the condition of your subfloor, total square footage of the project, and installation method. Demolition is necessary if you have existing flooring you want to replace with hardwood floors. New-construction homes do not require this step, as the subfloor is primed and ready for floor installation. During demolition, the flooring crew may find that your subfloor has damaged wood, uneven surfaces or other problems that must be addressed before the new wood can be laid down. Crews may charge on an hourly rate for subfloor repair, and the work can take a few hours to several days, depending on what’s hiding underneath your floor. The wood for your new floor generally arrives a few days before any work begins. This allows the wood to acclimate to the relative humidity in your house, which prevents it from shrinking or expanding after installation and causing gaps or buckling. The actual wood installation may take several days or more, depending on the size of your home and what type of custom cutting and designs are desired. If your flooring is not prefinished, the unfinished wood must then be sanded and stained in the home to treat and protect your new investment. Typically, stain takes a full day to dry, and multiple coats are applied. Baseboards and trim must also be installed. With all these variables at play, you can see why it’s important for a wood installation pro to provide an estimate only after seeing your home.

How much does it cost to install flooring?

On average, Thumbtack customers nationwide pay $5,500 for floor installation. The cost can range much lower or higher depending on the type of flooring you select (laminate is far less expensive than exotic hardwood), the square footage of the project, and other important variables like demolition and repair work needed. Here are some examples of average floor installation cost:

    • Basic floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • This can range up to $7 or $8 per square foot when tear-out and prep work is required.
    • Laminate floor and installation cost: $3-$8 per square foot.
      • Laminate is one of the most affordable materials and can start as low as $1.50 per square foot.
    • Wood floor installation cost: $3 per square foot (not including product).
      • $7 and up for hand-scraped oak planks and other specialized work.
    • Luxury vinyl tile installation: $3.50+ per square foot (not including tiles).
      • Cost includes prep work, underlayment, leveling and grouting.
    • Examples of additional floor installation costs:
      • Pouring concrete to level the under-flooring: $1,000-$1,500 for materials and labor.
      • Removing carpet: 35 cents or more per square foot.
      • Removing difficult ceramic or porcelain tile: about $2.25 per square foot.
        • Includes removal of the dura rock.
    • Floor repair: $75 minimum.

How much does it cost to install hardwood floors?

The cost of hardwood floors will depend primarily on the total square footage of flooring, the type of wood you select, the cost of labor in your region, and any preparation or repair work that needs to take place before installation. Selecting exotic woods, such as teak, will result in a higher cost for the project than a more affordable wood such as oak. The national average cost of hardwood floor installation is $5,750. Here are some examples of different woods and their average costs; actual costs will vary depending on the factors listed above.

    • Basic wood floor installation: $3 per square foot from a wood floor installation company.
      • The product cost for hand-scraped ¾-inch oak planks: $7 per square foot.
    • 620 square feet of maple floor:
      • Residential installation, total project cost: ~ $2,400 with five days of labor.
      • ¾-inch dark stained maple installed on top of new concrete in three rooms, a hallways, and a staircase.
        • Cost for total project: ~$3.87 per square foot.

How much are oak hardwood floors?

Installing oak hardwood floors can add value and beauty to your home. The cost of hardwood floors is typically based on the overall square footage of your new floor, the type of oak you select, any repair work your subfloor requires prior to installation, and any demolition costs to remove your old flooring. Other factors that will affect your total cost can include the regional cost of labor and business overhead of your flooring company.

A flooring installation company may charge $3 per square foot for standard installation. For hand-scraped (higher-end) ¾-inch oak planks, the cost is approximately $7 per square foot, for a total cost per square foot of about $10 as long as no repair work is required. Standard oak planks are available from big-box stores for as low as $3 per square foot, so the quality of oak you want will affect your total project cost.
