Tan and his crew did a good job with my remodel. He tiled my kitchen floor along with laying my backsplash with glass tiles. His group demoed the wood paneling in the dining room and drywalled. He also installed can lights in the kitchen, dining room and my living room. Tan even went above and beyond by repairing and replacing baseboards in the living room and master bedroom. Tan was easy to communicate with which made the job less stressful on my wife and I. Thanks for the good work!

They did a great job and were just a pleasure. There was a little space on a refrigerator glass that was hard to get so we removed the glass and she cleaned it right up. They really did a great job and you could tell she enjoys her work, appreciates the job, has an awesome personality and has great customer service skills. It is great to have someone do a job that acts like it is a pleasure and not a pain. Great job!

John and Lester did an awesome job repairing dormer window siding on my house. They gave me a quote up front and despite discovering unexpected issues, they stuck to their quote even though the amount of labor was greater than they initially anticipated. They are super friendly, trustworthy, and do great work -- highly recommend.

I will start by saying I was not an easy customer to deal with. I needed an Anderson window repair to a house in Virginia whilst I was in the UK. I found David Grover through Thumbtack who went and inspected the work and spare parts required and gave me a very reasonable quotation. The work was completed earlier than expected and at the price quoted. David made it easy to deal with him and accepted payment via Paypal which helped me out enormously. Give him a chance if you need any of the services he offers. Very satisfied with the outcome on what could have been a difficult situation to resolve from afar.

After 2 major storms, we encountered several roof leaks at our home near Hanover, VA. I called several contractors, but the earliest anyone would come to the house was 7-10 days. I did not want to wait that long, especially since we could get more rain at any time. After posting the job on Thumbtack, Jeff Hamm from Ridgeline Roofing & Contracting contacted me immediately! He was able to come out to me house THAT day and repair the leaks on the spot! We'll see how the work holds up, but so far I am very satisfied with this company. Jeff assured me that he would come back and address any additional issues if leaks occurred again in areas where he performed the repairs. These guys also can do windows & siding, so I will definitely be getting a quote from them for those items as well. Jeff was very professional, friendly, and knowledgeable. It's hard to find quality work at a reasonable price these days, and I am glad to have found both in Ridgeline Roofing & Contracting.

Great value and very responsive. The only reason that I couldn’t give them the full five stars is the caulking around the windows is messy. To be fair, I did not call them to complain and they may have been willing to fix it if I did. So, I would absolutely recommend them with the caveat that you ask for neat caulking around the windows. :-) Other than that, no complaints.

Installation of 2 sets of interior French doors with glass panels Within days of my initial call to Kaifus Boyd Home Improvements they contacted me to take measurements. It was reassuring that any potential issues with the installation of the French doors was addressed which enabled me to make a good sound decision whether or not to proceed with the installation. They valued my time arriving on time and well prepared. It showed that they valued my home in good preparation of the work area minimizing the dirt and debris. After the installation was completed they checked the French doors with me to make sure that I was pleased with their work. Weeks later they followed up with me. And yes, I was still pleased and satisfied. Feel confident knowing that your new doors installation will be a success hiring Kaifus Boyd Home Improvements. They are skilled dependable reliable and trustworthy.

Diane and her crew are extremely professional, friendly and responsive. It was a pleasure working with them. This job started out as a window replacement, but Diane recommended that she reglaze the existing wooden windows rather than replace with vinyl. In addition to reglazing the windows, Diane was able to complete many other items around the house including painting doors, trim, windows, ceilings, porch posts, and stair railings. They also were able to powerwash the house, porch, and walkway! Diane's crew has committed to returning in about a month or so to complete work cleaning up the windows once the glazing has fully set. Other than that, everything is done and looks great. Diane and her crew were punctual, flexible, and enjoyable to work with. I will look to them in the future.

Randy repaired a water leak in my garage and water leak in one my bedroom windows which was resulting in the lower bay window leaking water in the living room. Repairs were done in a timely manner and helped to eliminate two major issues with my home. Randy was extremely nice with explaining everything that needed to be done and his prices were competitive. I am a licensed real estate agent and I worked with Mike exclusively when he lived in New York. He did several projects for my clients to include window installations, door installations, a deck and a custom bath install for my boss. Mike is a very talented and knowledgeable professional and I recommend him highly. He is sorely missed in New York!

Project was to repair existing (older) windows so that they could open properly and lock. Steve was prompt, gave a fair assessment with explanation, and had the work completed when he said he would. I would definitely hire again, especially since I have a future window repair/installation project in the near future.

We had a Mechanical room that was just a storage area. I needed more room to prep food and store all my extra plates and serving peices. My dream was to have a Butlers Pantry that would suit my needs and Chris Fisher of Creative Design Homes did just that. He took my needs and turned them into the most wonderful room to work in, I have floor to ceiling cabinets to store extra large peices and my dessert glasses, which I have 13 shelves full of different sizes and shapes, all sit perfectly so I can take a tray of 8 or 12 glasses at one time. The upper & lower cabinets are also designed to meet all my needs. He built me a seperate closet to house other books, coffee urns etc.... We worked with Chris for approximately 2-3 months he was very professional he procured all permits nothing was done without permits and all was up and beyond code, time including waiting for cabinets to be made and special sink to come in, inspections to be done. He took the time and effort to make my work space set apart from others with attention to the tinest details. The people he brought into our home were true professionals they respected out home and took care not to damage anything. All in all it was a wonderful experience. Before Chris was finished we had another smaller project for him, I knew if I would have waited on this someone else would snatch him up, in my laundry room there was wasted space we designed a cabinet with pull out shelves for my pots which also go from floor to ceiling. He is a very respectful man with a big heart and wonderful ideas and he listens.... and creates the most beautiful rooms ... he is very methodical, his measurements are precise ... he may take a little more time but the end results you will not be disappointed, they are wonderful. I would recommend and use Creative Homes Design without hesitation.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you replace a window?

You may want to replace a window if the glass has been damaged, you’re remodeling a room, or you want to upgrade your energy efficiency as well as your style by getting rid of those drafty single panes that are losing you money. When replacing a window, you can remove and replace the entire window down to the house frame. This method is best if the existing frame is damaged or deteriorating, but requires construction skills and know-how and will take more time and money. An easier and less expensive option is to install an insert replacement window into the existing frame. Insert replacements are only an option if your window frame is in good condition without rot or damage.

When replacing an entire window, first you’ll carefully remove the existing window with a pry bar and other tools. Next, you’ll make any repairs and adjustments needed to the existing frame or header and studs to ensure that the space is perfectly plumb and square, so the new window will sit perfectly within the space. Next, install the new window from the exterior, securing it into place. You’ll need to precisely wrap and insulate the window to ensure it doesn’t leak. Then, install the interior casing and exterior trim (as needed). If you prefer to hire a professional to install a window, consider replacing more than one window at a time, as the pro can work more efficiently.

How much is a custom window?

Choosing custom windows will increase your window installation cost but will provide you with exactly what you want. The average national cost for window installation is $2,650. Your custom window costs will vary based on several factors. The first factor is the type of frame you want. The four most common types of frames are vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum and wood. Wood is typically the most expensive option, followed by aluminum. The type of glass you select will also affect cost. There are single-, double- and triple-pane windows. Most double- and triple-pane windows have gas sealed between the panes that act as insulation. Windows typically cost more the more energy-efficient they are, though this efficiency can save you money on utility bills in the long run. The type of glass used can also affect cost. There are different grades of glass — high-performance glass, low-e coated glass, and more — which all provide you with better insulation. In addition, the number of unified inches (window height x window width) you need will affect cost. The cost of custom windows will also be affected by installation cost and whether any repair or construction work is required to properly fit the new window.

How much would it cost to put in new windows?

The cost to replace a window can vary depending on factors such as window size, type of glass, brand of window, necessary trim repair, and any construction work required for installation. Labor rates and cost to do business in your region will also affect the cost. The national average window installation cost is $2,650 per project. Here are some examples of average trim repair and window replacement costs:

  • Trim repair:
    • Line and case a window frame with an MDF product: $400.
    • Line and case a window frame with raw hemlock wood: $500.
  • Approximate cost to install five windows at one time: $3,000.
  • Approximate cost to install one double-hung, energy-efficient 3-foot by 4-foot window: $500-$550.
    • For the same window size (3-foot by 4-foot) from a different manufacturer made with a specialty fiberglass exterior and all-wood interior, the cost could go up to $1,500.
    • Pricing can go as high as $5,000 for a bay or bow window with specialty glass and framing.
      • These examples include removal and disposal of old materials and window.
