I asked Arbor Tutors to help my son get a passing test score but they provided more than what we asked for. Ever since my son started tutoring with Drew in Math, he's been getting excellent test scores. Thanks, Arbor for making our family happy and proud.

We needed a Geometry Tutor for our 15 year old son George. This was not a class I could help him tackle. We were introduced to John Savens and he was a life saver. John Savens was able to talk with George at his level, kept him engaged, had the patience to explain the practices, created additional work for if the school didn't provide home work, and was always punctual and professional. John Saves absolutely provides the value added service we required to bring George up to the point he understood the Geometric concepts and raised his grade to a B. We're continuing to us John Sven through the summer to help bring George back up to speed with his Algebra work and be well prepared for Algebra 2 in his Junior year. Thank you for John Savens!! Sincerely, Lynne M. Trott

About

Students have told me that they appreciate the way I explain things and they are able to understand topics more clearly than they have with prior teachers. I believe this comes from my approach to help them see where the math comes from...rather than being satisfied with simply plugging numbers into a formula. I try to help them connect multiple ideas tighter, which helps them understand the big picture and see that mathematics is a language where all the parts work together very smoothly.

About

I am a Math specialist who works in the public-school system. My goal is to help students be successful as mathematicians.

About

I am a student at William and Mary studying linguistics and Spanish. I have been playing piano for 10 years and teaching lessons for 5. I have also played guitar for 5 years and taught lessons for 3. In addition, I have experience tutoring youth of all ages, from elementary school to high school. I would say Spanish is my specialty; my knowledge is extensive, especially instructing at the introductory level. I am a straight A student and am competent to tutor most subjects, but I also have particular previous experience in Algebra. Though I am skilled in presenting material from a textbook or workbook clearly along the format of the class, I also enjoy coming up with creative methods for teaching and tutoring and designing my own exercises.

About

I have a passion for working with students to help them reach their full potential and attain academic goals. I bring a lot of experience (17 plus years) and creativity to the table. I get to know each student, taking into account their unique strengths and interests when planning lessons and determining the best instructional approach. My role as an educator is to teach concepts and skills, but I think it is equally important to inspire drive and self-confidence in the kids I tutor. I believe that learning can be fun and I strive to make tutoring sessions interesting and engaging so that my students not only improve, but they want to learn and do their best!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How do you find a good math tutor?

Math home tutors are available for any age student, from elementary school to postgraduate studies. Rates will vary based on the tutor’s background, education and experience. To find a good math tutor, first determine your learning goals. Do you need help understanding and completing homework assignments? Are you preparing for the math portion of a standardized test? Next, read reviews from current and former students. Find someone with proven success helping students achieve their goals. If you want help on an ongoing basis, decide what your budget is and identify the tutors who fall within your range. Ask if there are additional fees for travel, as some home math tutors include travel costs in their rates and others charge extra. Ask about session length and the tutor’s teaching style, and whether they also offer online sessions or group sessions. Finally, schedule a single session with each of the math tutors you think are best to see who is the best fit.

How much do math tutors cost?

Math is a subject that’s challenging for many students. Fortunately, home math tutors can help students excel in math by working with them in focused one-on-one tutoring sessions. The cost for math tutors varies based on the type of math, the expertise and experience of the tutor, and geographic location. Pricing may range between $40 and $100 per hour, depending on the math subject. As a rule, the more complex the subject matter, the more the math tutor will charge for the lessons. The cost reflects the math tutor’s advanced studies and the work required for them to be able to teach on the subject. Frequency can also affect costs. Students can buy packages of lessons for a lower cost per session than buying individually. Nationally, the average hourly rate for a geometry home tutor is $50-$60. The national average rate for an algebra home tutor is $40-$50 per hour. For generalized math tutors, the national average ranges between $40 and $50 per hour. More intensive standardized test prep studies and math tutoring average $70-$100 per hour.
