Introduction: Formally educated in flute, piano, percussion, and vocal performance, Mr. Smith has won several regional and national competitions on each of his primary instruments, and has had the privilege of studying with and participating in masterclasses led by some of the the top artists in the world, including Ransom Wilson (Yale), Michael Parloff (MSM), Christopher Lamb (principal percussionist, NY Phil), Nico Castel (Met Opera), and Jon Nakamatsu (solo pianist). He can frequently be heard in recital at the Cathedral of the Sacred Heart (where he also serves as bass soloist and section leader) with Dr. Patrick Carlin, piano/organ. He can also be heard in performance (on both piano and flute) with the Quux Collective, a Richmond based new music ensemble directed by Dr. Sheri Oyan. Most recently, he has been a featured artist with Classical Revolution RVA, a group whose mission is to spread classical music outside of the concert hall and into the community. Mr. Smith has worked as pianist, vocal coach, musical director, and orchestrator for several professional theater companies across the country. Anthony is thrilled to be continuing his work with the Virginia Repertory Theatre, where his credits include The Color Purple, Nunsense, Blue Ridge Mountain Christmas, Always Patsy Cline, The Producers, The Music Man, Fiddler on the Roof, and several others. Outside of VaRep, his most recent regional credits include Pippin, Sweet Charity [Lee Playhouse], Trojan Women: A Love Story, Spring Awakening [University of Richmond], La Cage Aux Folles {Richmond Triangle Players], and Swamp Gas and Shallow Feelings [Barter Theater]. In addition to his professional theater credits, Mr. Smith has lent his talents to high school productions of Sweeney Todd, Phantom of the Opera, Gypsy, Into the Woods, Schoolhouse Rock: Live!, and several others. Anthony is currently the assistant director of bands and director of percussion at James River High School in Midlothian, VA. During his time at James River, the select percussion ensemble “Rapid Fire” has been awarded “grand champion” in its caption multiple times under the auspices of the Atlantic Indoor Association and Winter Guard International. Mr. Smith is a strong believer in the importance of music education and maintains an active private studio comprised of flute, percussion, piano, and voice students. He has also worked for several educational camps, is currently the musical director for Virginia Repertory Theatre’s “Stage Explorers” Summer Camps and Young Performers' Institute, and the Advanced Musical Theatre Camp at Swift Creek Mill Theatre.
