Introduction: I am a teacher of classical and musical theatre voice, acting, and public speaking. I provide lessons in technique, styles, and theory. I hold an MM from Yale University. I have 30+ years of experience as an operatic and a musical theatre performer in the US, Europe, and Asia. I have 20+ years experience teaching with students who perform with regional opera companies and theaters, and with international symphonies, music festivals, with regional theatres, on Broadway, and in feature films. I have a proven track record of placing students into performance careers, and into top tier performance universities as undergrads and graduate students. I am passionate about cultivating my craft and passing the lessons I have learned to a new generation of artists.

Singing Lessons

James is a great voice coach who truly supports and cares for his students. I have only had two lessons so far, but already I am starting to feel more confident in my vocal ability and am learning proper techniques to sing high notes without straining my jaw and neck. So thankful to have found him on TakeLessons!

Truly cares about the student's success. Willing to be flexible for scheduling voice lessons times. Very knowledgable about the voice and how to produce the best quality of sound.

Singing Lessons

Legit, friendly, professional, and credentialed. Some of his former students are working professionals. James is serious about his craft and conveys that to his student. He offers a free, comprehensive consultation to see if his teaching style is a good fit. Highly recommended! *****

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

I only teach 60-minute lessons. my pricing is based on the Richmond market, and I brought it down a little bit more so that I may be more accessible to the public. $70 for 60 minutes.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I offer prospective new students a consultation at a reduced price. This gives them the opportunity to meet me, see how I work, and if I work for them. this gives the perspective a true idea of what to expect in a lesson. It also gives that student, and their guardians if they are under 18, a good idea that I am trustworthy, and they, or their students, are in good and safe hands.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I have 30 years of experience on the stage with opera companies and theaters in the United States, Europe, and Asia. I began my teaching at Yale University and continued at Drake University, the University of Alabama, and the University of Virginia. My operatic training occurred with Yale University School of Music, and the San Francisco Opera
