I enjoyed working with my tutor Mr. Frampton. He is very good at solving Calculus and Physics problems, and was always modest when he wasn't able to figure it out. He was always courteous about wasting my time. I liked how he would add a bit of humor with his lesson. He would do all sorts of funny impressions of my teachers, in a joking way of course. Other than Calculus and Physics, he also taught me how to explain things to others in a meaningful way, and how to be professional and punctual. I enjoyed work8ing with him this year and last year, and hope to work with him again for my senior year in high school. Thanks a bunch Mr. Frmapton!! :)

Myriam Ward is an expertly professional teacher of Spanish. Her approach is to build the language infrastructure to enable fluency. Myriam has a lesson plan, handouts, and homework for each class. I can't imagine a better teacher, even at the college level. Her classes are fun, but you better do your homework. My husband and I have left the area but continue our lessons with Myriam via Skype. It has worked out very well. Muchas gracias Myriam!

Hannah is a phenomenal yoga instructor. She listens to what you want and responds accordingly, respectful of strengths and limitations. She is very knowledgeable! I had been doing yoga for quite some time in gyms, but it wasn't until I began taking private lessons with Hannah that I truly began developing, learning, and progressing.

I had the pleasure of working directly with Latarisa on several projects to create a platform where children from all walks of life could come together in a safe, positive environment to discuss life lessons, challenges they are faced with, goals and the importance of being who they are. Latarisa had great enthusiasm with the projects and was very creative in teaching her audience how to deal with all situations in a more positive way. Not only did she do a fabulous job teaching and working with the children, but she also taught other colleagues how to foster more positive outcomes in their own lives. Over the years, I watched her interpersonal skills quickly create and successfully cultivate collaborative team environments among children as well as adults. Even in the proverbial heat of trials and tribulations faced when bringing any group of people together, Latarisa not throw the towel in and quit, she pressed on and continued with a positive attitude. On numerous occasions, I witnessed her table her own timelines and duties to assist other colleagues. Latarisa's exemplify the characteristics of both a team leader and team player and would gladly welcome the opportunity to work with her again in any capacity.

Kathy has been a wonderful tutor for both my daughters, ages 14 and 16. She is able to connect and build a relationship with her students that builds confidence while they are learning, whether in Spanish 1 or Spanish 3. I highly recommend her for tutoring. Her knowledge and fluency is exceptional while still being able to meet the child where they are in their knowledge. My children's grades improved tremendously with her help. Thank you Kathy!

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a Spanish tutor do?

The goal of a Spanish tutor is to help students improve their Spanish reading, writing, comprehension, and conversation skills. The tutor’s approaches may vary, depending on whether the instruction is individual or a group class. Many Spanish tutors practice immersion — meaning they will speak only Spanish with their pupils. For students with little to no Spanish experience, the Spanish tutor may use a mix of Spanish and English to accustom their students to speaking the language.

A Spanish tutor can offer a wide range of services to their students. For students currently enrolled in a Spanish class through their middle school or high school, a Spanish tutor can help them with homework and language practice, as well as expanding their understanding of their current school curriculum. For adults, Spanish tutors will have different approaches based on that student’s need. Academics and those seeking high-level professional development for their career will often have more intensive and targeted lessons, drills, and interactive speaking tests. For adults who wish to learn conversational Spanish for fun or for travel, lessons may revolve around learning commonly used phrases and practicing speaking in relaxed settings.

How much do Spanish tutors charge?

Nationally, the average cost for a Spanish tutor ranges from $30 to $40 per hour. The cost for a Spanish tutor can vary depending on whether you choose private instruction or group lessons. Geographic location can affect cost; tutors in expensive cities and pricier regions command higher rates than in rural areas and small towns. The experience and education of the Spanish tutor will also affect their rates. For adult education, many people learning Spanish choose to join a Spanish school with tutors who teach group classes and also offer private tutoring for students. Typically these schools charge a monthly tuition that gives students access to a set number of classes per week, with private tutoring available at an additional cost. One example of an average cost is a monthly tuition of $200, which includes five 90-minute group lessons per month. Monthly tuition can vary depending on the school and the teachers. Short-term workshops are also a way to learn Spanish. Students may work with a Spanish tutor and group of other students at their skill level for a short period of time. One example of an average price is $100 for an eight-week course, with one 60-minute group class per week.
