Noel did my makeup for my prom and let me just tell you that makeup lasted until after my after prom at 4am! That's a full night of dancing and eating. She was such a sweet person and very easy to talk to. I will definitely be recommending her to people and having her do my makeup next time I have an event

So the story begins, it was the day before New Years Eve I had everything ready- shoes (check), Dress (check), nails (check), Hair (check)…make up (OH NO)! So I started to panic, I am new to VA what am I going to do?!?! I decided to try ThumbTack to see if I could find a local makeup artist. I said "Jesus take the wheel and drive fast"!! Within moments Ms. Lisa Rose wrote me back. She provided an detailed over view of her services, price and weblink to view online portfolio. I was very impressed. She event accommodated my time request even though it was New Years Eve. She was extremely flexible. New Years Eve, I went to her home because she was booked up. I was greeted with a warm smile. Her room looked like a professional makeup studio. She talked with me about my skin type and what look I was trying to achieve. After a few moments, she went to work. We talked and laughed. She is a beautiful person inside and out. Throughout the process, she had me look at the mirror occasionally to make sure I was happy with the look she was creating for me. I was elated:) An 1.5 hours later, Lisa showed me the mirror one final time. I was so beautiful - I was speechless. Bottom line, if you are looking for quality no need to look any further. Lisa will take great care of you. I am scheduling another appointment with her next month for another event I am attending. I promise you will not be disappointed. Customer for Life!!! Thank you Lisa Rose!!

Ralphann was fantastic! Truly a caring and nice individual, she is also a true expert in her field. My wedding hair and makeup looked incredible, both in real life and in the photographs! The make up application lasted in 94 degree heat with 90 percent humidity, looking almost as perfect at midnight as it did at 3 pm. If you want an expert makeup artist that is also a good person, pick Ralphann and her Beyond Beauty team.

Jada and her makeup artists were absolutely wonderful. Their makeup was flawless, and they were upbeat and happy the entire time. Jada was very professional in all her communications, and made all of us feel at ease. We had six makeups to do, of different ages and complexions, yet all of our makeups were equally well done and amazing.

Carolyn did a wonderful job for my prom makeup! I was super happy with the end result. I've never worn more than just mascara and she was able to make my face flawless without making it feel like I had 10 layers of makeup on. We discussed which eyelashes would be best for me since I've never worn any before and she made a custom lipstick for me. Carolyn works diligently and beautifully. I recommend Carolyn to anyone who wants their makeup done on time and beautifully 😊😊

Iman is an amazingly talented make up artist! She did my prom makeup and I swear, I've never gotten that many compliments before in my life! She's very personable and flexible! I asked very last minute if she could come earlier than our scheduled appointment time and she did just that with no hesitation, ifs, ands, or buts which shows her excellent customer service skills and willingness to go above and beyond for her clients! She answered all my questions and took care of all my concerns. She's really one of the best MUAs around, don't sleep on her!!

As I was preparing for my best friends wedding i freaked out when I remembered I hadn't found anyone to do my makeup!! I immediately seeked Kendra and she came through like a BOSS. I traveled from NC and Kendra found a location to make it convient so that I could make it back in time for photos for the wedding. The location was at a salon that was clean and welcoming. It took about 45 minutes for Kendra to complete my flawless look (lashes, brows, foundation, eye shadow, lips). She was prepared, she recommended products, she explained how you should use certain products. She was amazingggggg!!!!!!! On top of all that, her fee was affordable!!!! I received soooooo many compliments on my makeup!!! My makeup lasted for 17 hours. LITERALLY, and I did not want to wash it off!! I would DEF reach out to Kendra in the future to meet my makeup needs!!!! AWESOME!!!!!!

I loved working with Jenn Brosch! She did my wedding makeup and she also did my bridal party makeup and it was absolutely amazing! I couldn't ask for a better MUA, she's so professional, knowledgable, and kind. She gave me tips on my skin to be prepared for my big day and she even suggested products I should use specifically for my skin type. Jenn is so talented, you definitely need to book her for your wedding day!

Diana transformed me into a beauty. I liked how she applied each makeup, she explained what she was doing and why. She recommended some great things for me which works. I left at ease. The makeup was spot on, I was pleased with it because I don't wear makeup everyday. I felt like a totally new person and everyone complimented how pretty I looked.

      Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

      • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
      • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
      • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
      • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
      • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
      • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
      • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
      • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

      • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
      • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
      • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
      • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
      • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

How much should you tip a wedding makeup artist?

Wedding makeup artists ensure you and your bridal party are looking your best bright and early on your wedding day. Tipping a wedding makeup artist for their hard work is standard practice, and is also greatly appreciated. A tip of 15 percent to 20 percent of the total bill is appropriate. You may consider tipping extra if the makeup artist or someone on their team went above and beyond — for example, squeezing in Aunt Martha at the last second or redoing a flower girl’s hair free of charge after she dunked it in the fountain.

A gratuity is a reflection of a job well done, so if the wedding makeup artist was late, did a shoddy job or didn’t provide all the services you negotiated, you are not required to tip. Talk with your wedding makeup artist prior to the event to ask how they prefer payment and gratuity to be handled. Can you pay by credit card the day of the event and include a tip then? Do you need to pay in cash the day of the event? Find out ahead of time how to manage payment for services so you can be prepared with cash or credit cards as needed. Even better, delegate the task of payment to someone in your bridal party so you can just enjoy your day.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
