Installation of a pond with waterfall, rocks and plantings. Tremain arrived when scheduled and gave me an estimate to complete the job. He worked around my schedule and did a fantastic job creating a very beautiful water garden. I loved how he helped me save my goldfish which were in my old pond. A very kind and caring person. Will hire again for other projects.

Customer Service: Ryan was incredibly flexible and his team was very polite and even though we got rained out a couple of times they did a solid job. I'd be hire to him again the next time I need landscape work. Job Requested: We had to get our landscaping touched up on very short notice so we could move overseas to include weeding and edging all of our beds, moving some plants around and moving around some slate stones to create a nice walkway for us.

After deciding to install an irrigation system and well in our new home, we reached out to four different irrigation companies for quotes. The quotes we received all came back relatively close in price. Initially, we almost didn't go with Andy's company because of the format of the estimate he provided. However, after meeting with him, he was candid, very responsive to correspondences, knowledgeable and detailed with our inquiries. He was very informative throughout the process and provided better solutions than the other businesses for our upcoming lawn projects. After hiring Andy, he remained committed to making sure we were happy with each aspect of the work all the way until we did the final walk through. He continuously kept us informed of the schedule, and we appreciated that the yard was kept clean. We were very impressed with the level of effort they put into making sure the grass and dirt were placed back into the trenches they dug. Overall, great work, customer service, and professionalism throughout the project. Highly recommended!

Had lots of volunteer trees we wanted removed. Austin showed up on time and got to work. He was careful about the plants. Cleaned up and hauled everything away. AND, by far, he had the best price. We will be hiring him soon for some landscaping. Highly recommended.

Lee and his employee James were great! After having 5 contractors come to my house for in-home estimates to complete my finished off garage, I hired Lee for the job. Lee came out to give us a quote to frame and drywall a ten foot wall, to closet in my washer and dryer - he was extremely reasonable in price, started immediately, and had the job done on time, as promised. They were prompt, excellent, quality work and cleaned up everything when the job was complete. I would absolutely hire Lee and James again!!

I hired Jerome for a landscaping project prior to putting my house on the market. I needed an overall cleanup of my property as well as mulching the beds, repositioning some plants, and planting new flowers. Jerome was extremely responsive with communication and very knowledgable about what would work best for my yard. I recommend him for landscaping services and I would definitely hire him again.

Jasper was the first to respond to my thumbtack estimate request and had next day availability! He is courteous and thoughtful (called an hour before coming and sent pics after the work was done since I wasn't home). I was blown away by the yard work that was done. Many bushes were trimmed and pulled (as requested) and little additional details were done! My driveway and patios and sidewalks were swept and they even cleaned beneath my trampoline! I found statues in my yard that I didn't even know were concealed by overgrown plants. Thank you, Jasper!!

Paul and his assistant, Chris, did a beautiful job installing synthetic turf in our townhouse "backyard". Before that, we had only mulch there, which was messy and our two dogs did not like it. The turf is beautiful and the dogs couldn't be happier if it was real grass. Wish we had ordered more of the turf because when we first contracted with Paul, we had planned to leave mulch beds all around the perimeter, but then changed our minds. We decided we would rather cover the whole area with the turf - our mistake, not Paul's. We would definitely hire him and his company again.

I wanted a receptacle installed for my pool. I am an Engineer and 99% of all my work in my home I complete myself. This does save me money, but mostly it is because I take more PRIDE in my own work then other "Contractors" would. THIS WAS NOT THE CASE with Start to Finish. They customized every aspect of the job to tailor to my needs & wants. As they were working if they found an existing discrepancy with my home (built in 65) they notified me about it but did not try to push to add it to the bill or come back and they could "Hook me up." Absolutely PROFESSIONAL and if I need any work in the future that I may feel a little out of my realm for they will be the ONLY ones that I call. Jesse C.

He is the best - he has very willingly done everything I have asked him to do. Once more, he went above and beyond the call of duty for a "handyman" when I had a freak accident in my home while he was here. He helped me get up, took me to the emergency room, stayed with me the whole time, after took me to Walgreens to get my prescription, than home. And still, kept going, he would not leave until I was situated in my bedroom, with phones, water, Kleenex, etc., etc. What a gentleman!! He comes every week and tackles my lists with expertise, friendly, smiling courteous service. I told him I plan on keeping him busy for the next few weeks - that's how good he is!!!!

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

  • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
  • Read online reviews of client experiences.
  • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
  • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
  • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

How much does it cost to have your lawn mowed?

Regular lawn maintenance can do wonders for your home’s curb appeal. Professional lawn care prices will vary based on the regional cost to do business and regional cost of labor, the size of your lawn, and any additional services you may desire such as edging or mulching. The national average for lawn mowing costs is $30-$50. Pros may charge an hourly rate, a flat rate or by the square foot (an acre contains 43,560 square feet). Square footage rates factor in the professional’s time, the use of their equipment, and the gas to operate the mower. Distance may also affect cost: If you live outside the company’s standard service range, you may pay an additional travel fee. Here are some examples of average prices for mowing and lawn maintenance:

  • Up to 8,000-square-foot property: $30 per week/$120 per month.
    • Bimonthly: $40 per service/$80 per month.
    • One time only: $45 per service.
      • Prices include mowing all turf grass areas; trimming grass away from fences, structures, trees, and lawn edges; and clearing or blowing all grass trimmings from driveways, sidewalks, curbs, etc.
  • Hourly rate: $25 per hour (including travel, equipment costs and labor).
  • Lot size:
    • Smaller lots in subdivisions: $35.
    • Half-acre lot: $50.
    • One-acre lot: $100.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

How much does it cost to have landscaping done?

Professional landscaping can help reinvent your outdoor space, boost your curb appeal and get a major return on investment with. Landscaping can encompass anything from adding new plants, trees and shrubs, to leveling the ground and laying sod for a lawn, to building in hardscaping such as sidewalks, water features or retaining walls. The national average landscaping price is $10,160. Landscaping prices can be far lower (with hourly rates ranging from $50 to $150) if you’re only seeking professional help with softscaping or seeking consultation on landscape design. Softscaping means adding or changing horticultural elements, such as planting a garden or adding a hedge. Hardscaping is where costs can really start to rise. Hardscaping requires labor and heavy equipment to excavate the earth; you may need to pour concrete, or you may need a pro who can transport and place gravel and other inorganic elements. Your total landscaping cost will vary based on the amount of work you want done, how much labor is required, and the cost of the materials you are using. A good rule of thumb for a major landscaping project, according to the American Society of Landscape Architects, is to budget 5 percent to 10 percent of the value of your home.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
