Introduction: "Sharin' the Joy" is my studio motto! Want to learn how to PLAY music? I share my 40+ years of professional musical experience with students as I individualize lesson plans to meet their goals. As we play music together I focus on students' learning styles and help them maximize their natural gifts while offering methods to overcome the inevitable challenges that arise. I bring my flute player perspective to piano students, offering insight into finding and developing melodic lines in all piano voices. We concentrate on ergonomic positions and techniques to protect growing joints while learning to play musically from the earliest lessons. Students are encouraged to listen to a wide variety of genres, and bring their favorite titles so that we can learn to play them. As students become more accomplished, I offer effective accompaniment coaching, teaching pianists how to work with vocalists and instrumentalists. I choose teaching methods based upon learning styles, and supplement them with a wide variety of literature. I offer flute and recorder students techniques to protect their bodies and instruments while learning to make their instruments sing, emphasizing clear sound quality and clean technique. I include ensemble playing techniques, and offer well-rounded lesson materials (orchestral, concert band, small ensemble, duo, and recital-appropriate material in addition to popular, holiday, and folk music from around the world). All students are offered performance opportunities, and strongly encouraged to take advantage of them. All students study music theory. My students are neuro- and age-diverse. Lesson plans are individualized to special interests and needs. Students are offered ensemble and performance opportunities. Most importantly, students are encouraged to share their special interests and goals, towards which we strive while learning how to discover and develop the joy of sharing music! Please visit the Studio Muse'n Facebook page to see photos and videos of some of my students and myself! My full-time professional career as a flutist/teacher began in 1974, when I was the first woman instrumentalist accepted in the US Army Field Band. Flute performance and coaching experiences include orchestral, concert band, woodwind quintet, mixed instrument chamber ensembles, harp/flute duos, and recital repertoire. Piano performance venues dictate repertoire; these include churches, restaurants, recitals, book signings, benefits, and private affairs. Recorder performances usually occur in small venues (book stores, private homes, churches). I offer committed students tuition packages that include opportunities for performance, ensemble, and theory education. Experience a one-hour enrollment lesson to share your expectations, learning style, and goals and to gain insight into my teaching methods and style. Payment options include cash, checks, and online methods. I am available for private and public flute, piano, and recorder performance. Fees available upon request.

Tonia is an immensely talented teacher with the perfect combination of structure and flexibility to enable my son Theo to learn and grow. She continuously amazes me with her ability to get him to the next level, and he genuinely looks forward to lessons with her. She really gets to know her students and what makes them tick as individuals, and tailors her lessons accordingly.

My son studied flute with Tonia Herrin throughout middle school and high school. She pays detailed attention to the technical aspects of playing, and this pays off. This careful building of a student's technique translates into excellent musicianship as well.

FAQs

  • What should the customer know about your pricing (e.g., discounts, fees)?

The quoted price is for a one-hour enrollment lesson, during which time we discuss goals, I teach a 30-minute lesson to ascertain learning style, current ability, ergonomic adjustments, and collect contact information. I offer tuition packages that allow monthly payments from $240 - $620, depending upon length of lesson, instrument(s), and commitment to a proscribed number of lessons. Performance pricing and availability are available upon request.

  • What is your typical process for working with a new customer?

I offer a one-hour tuition enrollment appointment that provides an opportunity to share your expections with me, and includes a playing demonstration and a short lesson with the student(s). There is a fee for the enrollment appointment.

  • What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?

I studied privately from the age of five and earned several awards (including Superiors in solo competitions, top scores in band competitions, the John Phillip Sousa Band award), and multiple scholarships for college. I was the first woman accepted in the US Army Field Band (at the age of 19). I have performed in orchestras, concert bands, woodwind quintets and other small ensembles of mixed instruments, harp/flute duos, and solo recitals. I play piano for private venues and restaurants in addition to pro bono performances to benefit nonprofits.
