FAQs
- What education and/or training do you have that relates to your work?
Membership in the Piano Technicians Guild is the best way to stay on top of my skills and continue to learn. Not only have I regularly attended seminars and conventions where training is give, but I have made many valuable connections through my affiliation with PTG. Most technicians are self-employed and work alone. Belonging to PTG has kept me up-to-date on the latest skills, techniques, and materials to be able to do the best job possible. I have also attended extended training from Steinway & Sons at the New York factory on three different occasions. I attended Yamaha training in Buena Park, CA at the Little Red School house and am a certified Yamaha technician. I attended the Shigeru Kawai training course at the Kawai training center in California.
- How did you get started doing this type of work?
As a young child I was fascinated by the piano. I took the front off of my own piano and would look at and analyze all of the moving parts. I wanted to be a technician but was discouraged by any of the tuners I talked to because they said "Girls aren't piano tuners." And, sadly, back then they weren't. But I never gave up my desire and 26 years later I got the chance to do my apprenticeship and I knew I would never regret it. And I haven't yet!
- What types of customers have you worked with?
Tuning, repairs, regulating, voicing, reconditioning, rebuilding, finish touch-up, purchase consultation, appraisals & evaluations.
