I needed a makeup artist for prom and it was the night before and I had nobody. Shae emailed me right away and told me she could do it and was willing to drive further just to meet me. She was very kind and helpful and helped me get the look I wanted. It was very fast and she's very good at what she does. I got so many compliments that night, everybody loved my makeup. Highly recommend Shae, she's great

Tracie did an amazing job on my bridal makeup as well as the mother of the bride makeup! My day started off rough, the person who was supposed to do my hair didn't show up and I had to go to a salon who did an awful job and Tracie even offered to fix my hair since she could see I was so upset! She was at the venue before I even arrived, and she was able to do both of our makeup in a small window of time. She gave me a little bag with extra lipstick just in case but not one time did I have to check my makeup in the mirror or reapply anything. It turned out wonderful and I felt the way every bride should feel on their big day, beautiful. Tracie is your girl for all your big day hair and makeup needs!

Looking for a makeup artist with experience in Indian/Pakistani makeup/hair/dupatta setting is not an easy task in NC, let alone, eastern NC. Finding Divya was a blessing! Not only is she amazing at what she does, but she is very easy to work with, listens to concerns, and knows how to makes her clients feel comfortable. She was extremely prepared and accommodating the day of my wedding. Not only did I feel flawless on my wedding day, but I felt very comfortable thanks to Divya!

Michelle is a pro. I've had many makeup artists work on me in the past, and she is one of the best. She has great technique, uses superior brands, and acts super professional. Because she is so good at what she does, she charges accordingly. Don't be discouraged by her rates. You definitely get what you pay for. And believe me, for something as important as a wedding, you do not want to skimp on makeup. You will not regret hiring Michelle. I can guarantee you will look gorgeous! Thanks Michelle!! Kurumi did my hair & makeup trial for a bridal shoot recently and she was incredible! I've never seen myself done up so perfectly and to my exact preference. I know that the wedding day will be just as flawless! I'm a very picky person especially with my Asian features, yet Kurumi patiently and with pinpoint precision worked with me and my Pinterest boards. She's helpful, sweet, and has a great sense of humor! She helped get me into my dress also and was so accommodating to my fiance assistant who was also there! Professional, talented, and just the best MUAH you could hope for! I could not give a more resounding recommendation!

As a fellow Esthetician and makeup artist, on my wedding day, I needed someone I could trust to express the best version of me with makeup. I chose Katie Horton, whom I knew to be a talented, respectful, dynamic artist. She was my lash extension artist as well. Her bridal service packages are all encompassing and affordable. She totally knows her stuff and expresses a desire to be a great helper on your important day. Go with Katie and you will be camera ready come rain, sweat or tears because she uses fantastic, skin nourishing makeup. I love her work.

Julia is an incredibly tallented hair stylist & makeup artist. I felt so beautiful & at ease on my wedding day, thanks to her. Julia listened to my request, provided a trial hair consultation, and did some magic to make my hair dreams come true. I gave Julia the task of creating a hairstyle that could fit under a motorcycle helmet, could be windblow & stay glamorous for hours. This girl has an eye for style & she is a great support to any bride or bridal party. Oh and did I mention she is fun, lovely, handworking, efficient & works well in a variety of settings including proms, banquets, black tie events, weddings, or any time you want to feel your best.

Anne did my bridal makeup along with several bridesmaids. She was so amazing and made the morning so much fun. She was also very supportive of me being a mom and was so patient with my 2 year old. She was even totally chill when my 2 year old came over and wanted to be involved in what we were doing. She did and amazing job on all of our makeup and I highly recommend her.

I saw Kathryn's work as a makeup artist on Instagram and was really impressed with what I saw! I reached out and ended up booking her for my wedding (10/28/17). Her trial was perfection. I had an ugly blemish and she covered it up perfectly. I got my makeup done at 11am, went to my friend's wedding, and my makeup was perfect all the way up until I took my makeup off before bed that night! I was so impressed! Needless to say, makeup was my smallest worry on my wedding day. I luckily only went to one makeup artist before choosing who I wanted for my wedding. I heard a lot of my other bride friends complain about their trials because they "didn't look like themselves". Kathryn makes sure she sees what you look like "everyday" and glam's you up, but still makes you look like yourself. I LOVED how I looked on my wedding day. My skin was perfect, the contour rocked, and the eye makeup was perfect for "me". Besides incredible talent and results, Kathryn is punctual - she got to my venue before I did! She is thorough, but quick. She uses great products and perfectly matches foundations to your skin. And most of all, she's very personable and funny. She makes a great addition to the bridal suite! All my bridesmaids loved her!

Shannon did makeup for my wedding for myself (the bride), 3 bridesmaids, the groom's mom and my mom. Her work was absolutely stunning and we look gorgeous in the photos!! The only downside (and reason that this review is not 5 stars) is the timeline. We discussed being completed by 2pm for pictures but she didn't get to me (the last person) until nearly 2. Besides that, everything was perfect!

Beth is professional, FUN, and does Ana amazing job. I have and will continue to recommend her to anyone and everyone for wedding makeup or really any makeup. She managed to get me, 8 bridesmaids, and my mom out the door feeling like our best selves with her friend Sarah. Couldn't have picked a better makeup artist!

    Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

How long does a henna tattoo stay on?

Typically a henna tattoo stays on anywhere from one to three weeks. Henna artists work with henna paste, also called mehndi, which dyes the skin for a short period of time. An important part of Indian culture, the use of henna has become increasingly popular in the United States, with henna artists providing henna tattoos for weddings, as event entertainment and for other special events. Henna artists typically apply their designs to the palms and backs of the hands, the wrists, up to the elbows, and from the feet up to the knees. To preserve the rich color of your henna tattoo and help it set, avoid water as much as possible within the first 24 hours of application. The color will be richest during the first week. Brides may want to have their henna tattoos applied one or two days before the wedding for optimal results.

How much do wedding makeup artists cost?

A wedding means love, celebration and tons of wedding photos. Professional wedding makeup artists have you looking your best on your big day and forever after in your wedding photos. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, although this price can increase based on your location, the extent of the makeup services and the reputation of the makeup artist. Most wedding makeup artists offer discounts to brides who book group services for their maids, mothers and flower girls at the same time. Wedding makeup artists who also do wedding hair usually offer package rates for hair and makeup combos. Here are some examples of average wedding makeup pricing:

    • Bridal makeup: $85-$125. Pricing often includes full face, eyes, lips, brows and false eyelashes. Airbrush makeup may be an additional $20 or more.
    • Bridal hair and makeup: $150-$200.
    • Bridesmaid and bridal party makeup: $50-$100 per person.
    • Bridesmaid hair and makeup: $100-$150.
    • Flower girl makeup: $25-$35.
    • Trial sessions: $60-$120, depending on the makeup artist. Some charge their full rate and others charge a partial rate for trial makeup services.
    • Hourly rates to stay on and keep makeup touched up throughout reception: $35-$75 per hour.
    • Travel fees: 50 cents to $1 per additional mile beyond a set radius — such as 50 miles.

Do I need a makeup artist for my wedding?

There are no rules around your wedding day, and that means it’s your choice whether to have a wedding makeup artist. If you’re on the fence about hiring a wedding makeup artist, consider the pros and cons. Some women decide against a wedding makeup artist to save money. The national average cost for a wedding makeup artist is $70-$100, which is an expense some women prefer to do without. Other women just don’t love wearing makeup. Some brides have friends or family members who are talented makeup artists willing to provide their services. If you choose not to have a wedding makeup artist, be sure to do at least two trial runs of your makeup look well before the wedding day to avoid any morning-of panic.

On the other hand, a wedding makeup artist can make the bride feel pampered and confident, giving her a flawless, fabulous look for the ceremony and reception and in wedding photos. For brides who are uncomfortable with heavy makeup, many wedding makeup artists usually excel at the natural look. Many brides consider wedding makeup part of the ritual and tradition of the ceremony, a shared experience with the entire bridal party. Ultimately your choice of whether to hire a wedding makeup artist should be based on what will make you feel most confident and happy.

How do you choose the right makeup artist for your wedding?

A wedding makeup artist can ensure a flawless look on your big day. Finding the perfect person isn’t all about price, though. Here are tips for choosing the right makeup artist for your wedding:

    • Research before reaching out. Wedding makeup artists should have an online presence with portfolios of their work. Find someone with an aesthetic you love.
    • Read reviews. You want a wedding makeup artist who’ll be on time, do beautiful work, and add a positive vibe to your day. Pay attention if previous clients report bad experiences with a makeup artist.
    • Consider skin tones. If your bridal party has a range of skin tones, make sure your wedding makeup artist and assistants are experienced and talented working with everyone.
    • Is your top pick available on your date? If so, put down a deposit to secure their services.
    • Confirm rates and payment. Clearly discuss prices and payment plans, and sign a detailed contract so there are no surprises on your wedding day.

What is the meaning behind henna tattoos?

Henna tattoos, as they are called in the United States, have a long tradition in Indian, African and Middle Eastern cultures. For centuries, the leaves of dried henna plants have been ground into a fine paste to be used as a temporary and nontoxic skin dye. This form of body decoration has been used in celebrations, weddings and ceremonial rites of passage in many cultures. Often in Hindu weddings, henna artists decorate the hands and feet of the bride (and at times the groom) with intricate designs. In some Muslim traditions, henna artists paint women with henna designs as they are in their final stages of pregnancy. In the United States, popular culture has adopted this beautiful body art and henna artists provide brides (and sometimes grooms) with temporary henna tattoos. Henna artists are also a popular choice for entertainment at corporate events, birthday parties, bachelorette parties and festivals. Henna artists may charge anywhere from $10 to $300 per hour.
