Sheldon did some excellent work at our house. The garden areas look great and he also removed a small tree. I was a little worried about the project finishing by the day we agreed on but Sheldon and his crew stayed and worked late in order to finish on time. He is a man of his word.

Julio and his team did a great job of cleaning up my rock gardens and saving an apple tree from a neighboring bamboo plant. They aerated the soil and laid down compost prior to completing the job. Before they left they also cleaned up a couple of other areas on my property and made arrangements to come back to complete a task which they discovered while working and did not have the right tools for. They arrived on time and completed the job on time and completely cleaned up before they left. My yard looks fantastic and my apple tree is starting to show signs of recovery! I would not hesitate to hire them again. Great crew - a pleasure to do business with.

My grass was bare, gardens needed to be cleaned up and I had rose bushes looking ragged. I left for work and before lunchtime, my entire yard was transformed, into a clean, well-designed beautiful yard.

Precision dropping of tree parts onto my expensively designed garden. They removed and replanted shrubs, moved heavy large planters and then replaced them afterwords. Workers moved all debris to the front yard as requested.

Patrick did a wonderful job on my project. He was able to help me design a useful layout that ended up looking both aesthetically appealing and was functional for the space that I had. His attention to detail is great and his prices are extremely competitive. He listens to what your needs and wants are and does his best to make it happen. I have already recommended him to several people and I would definitely use him again.

We contracted with John to make a wooden Arbor for our garden. John was amazing to work with; he listened to our idea, gave us very helpful suggestions and was able to create a beautiful Arbor that worked perfectly with the space. Not only is John a skilled craftsman but he also puts in tremendous amount of positive energy into the work he does. We will definitely be using John for future projects!

Connecting with Oliana Gardening was superbly serendipitous. As an interior designer and landlord, my gardens need to be both aesthetic and highly functional, and preferably mostly native. I needed a landscaping establishment that was reliable, trustworthy, knowledgeable about natives, the right price, able to do both maintenance and renovations, and, this was a biggie, artistically trained. Oliana Gardening is meeting all these needs beautifully. Reliable and trustworthy means appointments are kept, communication is good, work gets finished, and my property gets cleaned and locked up as it should be. Being able to trust Oliana Gardening as I do makes my life so much easier. Jumanji really knows her native plants, and helped me figured out a scheme for a sunny front garden that I was failing miserably with on my own. I’d spoken to other people about natives before, but they either couldn’t imagine an entirely native garden, or were so natives-oriented they seemed to sniff at my aesthetic needs. Jumanji supports my dual and sometimes conflicting requirements. For example, while it’s stressful on sword ferns to completely cut their old fronds, we’re compromising with selective trimming. The fact that Jumanji does both installations and maintenance is especially helpful because every act of maintenance from pruning to carefully placing excess leaves in the right spot all leads toward the overall garden vision. She’s not going to damage anything from ignorance or mess up what is working well like my clean gravel drive by getting dirt all over it as one “gardener” did. More, Jumanji keeps teaching me new things about gardening (like the nuances of pruning redtwig dogwood and serviceberry), which makes the process fun. To me, Jumanji’s greatest asset, is that is also an artist. Many companies have great plant knowledge or construction abilities, but their gardens often lack unity or artistry. I absolutely love collaborating with Oliana Gardening as one creative with another. Jumanji understands the creative process, creative angst, and “can we move it again?” Jumanji also has other equally talented colleagues, so when I wanted a border between my plants and gravel, she brought in an artist friend who can weld. Together they created a beautiful steel border and craftily installed it among carefully placed rocks to make everything look level and balanced (when the ground wasn't). Almost last, Oliana Gardening understands my garden ambitions aren’t backed by a big budget so existing plants, rocks, leaves etc. have been used to their utmost. To offset costs, we’ll figure out things I can do myself, we’ll work together for a bit (such as when she wrapped my tree with lights and installed some new rocks), or spread work out over several months. My garden has really come together since working with Oliana Gardening, and I look forward to working with Jumanji’s company long into the future.

I had a pretty small job for Noah to do since I think he does mainly large jobs, but he came over, gave me an estimate, and did the work. I had extra gravel put on my two side yards and moving several plants around my front landscaping, including a Japanese maple that was root bound in a pot. He and his partner worked pretty much the whole afternoon and accomplished what I needed. I would recommend them for your small or large jobs.

My project was quite large consisting of resurfacing a garage roof deck with new railing and steps, removing concrete pathways and replacing with bluestone pavers, designing front porch steps, designing a potting and garden shed, designing a "condo" to camouflage all my garbage and recycling cans, installing an irrigation system, lighting, 2 water features with one also being a water garden, designing and planting garden containers, laying new sod, picking and planting new plant material and relocating and replanting some of my existing plants. I needed a professional landscaper who would walk me through all the design aspects and recommend a hardscape specialist, and ensure all the work being done would be done properly for a quality result. My meeting with Robin Parsons began with a consultation at my house. She made suggestions for plants and design, and after that initial meeting, I knew I had the right designer and didn't bother researching other landscapers. At first I had a bit of "sticker shock" when I began to price out the scope of work for what I wanted done. She helped me understand what each element costs and I had to decide what was important and rethink my budget. And in the end she helped me make the right choices. She listened to all my needs and communicated clearly to what needed to be done, paid close attention to all the details, she came with pictures, ideas and recommendations, and even drove me to retailers specializing in sheds, concrete, and garden containers to help me decide on products. My project is almost completed, and I can already see how beautiful and welcoming my landscape turned out to be. Robin exceeded all my expectations, is a pleasure to work with and I look forward to continually working with her on my future projects of choosing a house color, shutters, and designing my garage driveway.

We have worked with Matt for the last two summers, and will tackle the third and final phase of our project this summer, 2016. Matt and his crew installed a stone path with steps down to our back gate, and a stone staircase up a steep slope from our back yard to our front, on the side of our house. The design included planting beds and lighting. MLG selected plantings for the pathway, and made recommendations for future plantings. Matt also built three garden boxes for our yard, out of sturdy and beautiful juniper. We so appreciated Matt working within our budget, and helping us break up our project into workable phases. We are excited to watch as the plantings fill in. This summer will see the design and installation of a new back gate, and more landscaping. It has been a pleasure to work with Matt and his crew. They were timely, worked hard, and cleaned up as they went. Matt was easy to get hold of, and always responsive. A great experience!

We needed two large garden areas tilled up to prep for planting. Troy came out with his rototiller and got the job done in a couple hours. We are extremely happy with the willingness to help us with the project and some of the informative tips he offered as well. We will definitely be in touch in the future to purchase some fruit trees and help with designing an edible garden!

I would highly recommend her for your gardening and landscaping projects.

Matthew Jnana at Aloha Landscaping cleaned up and trimmed our landscaping and added bark & gravel to our .3 acer lot before we put our house on the market. The work exceeded our expectations and the yard looks wonderful. After we paid the deposit, he started the job a day later than he said he would. In the end he came through with flying colors by finishing on time within budget. We couldn't have asked for more. He and his crew were hard-working, helpful and knowledgeable.

        Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

What does a landscape contractor do?

Landscape contractors work from outdoor architectural or design plans to build and install hardscaping or softscaping for the client, much as a general contractor uses architectural designs to build a house. Landscape contractors are experts in soil drainage, grading, hardscaping (installing concrete paths and retaining wall, building ponds, etc.), and planting. They have heavy equipment such as excavators and tractors to prepare the land as needed.

Some landscape contractors are also landscape architects or landscape designers. The titles can be compared with those in home construction: A building or landscape architect must earn a specialized architecture degree and pass an exam to have a license. A designer — whether an interior designer or a landscape designer — does not usually require a license to work. Landscape contractors are not required by law to work from plans designed by a landscape architect, so you may work directly with the landscape contractor to specify the work you’d like done. The national average cost for large-scale landscaping projects is $10,160. Pricing can vary greatly depending on the project scope, materials and design.

How do you find a good landscape architect?

Hiring a landscape architect is an investment in your home. Landscaping can reduce water bills, improve your home resale value, add to your daily living experience and significantly boost curb appeal. A landscape architect will draw the designs for your new landscape; you’ll want to hire a landscape contractor to carry out the plans. Many companies provide design-build landscaping services, with a company architect creating plans for your vision and the landscape contractor executing the vision. With the proper academic background and licensing, a person can be both landscape architect and landscape contractor. Here are a few tips for finding a great landscape architect:

        • Research online portfolios and find several landscape architects whose work interests you.
        • Read online reviews of client experiences.
        • Research whether the landscape architects you are interested in are currently licensed and in good standing with the licensing board, and check whether any complaints have been issued against them. Each state will have their own searchable database. For example, you can search for California landscape architects via the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
        • Request bids from your selected landscape architects.
        • Hire the one you like the most, taking care to have a clearly written contract outlining scope of work.

For more, check out our tips for smart hiring on Thumbtack.

What should you look for when hiring a landscaper?

Landscaping can be costly — though it usually pays off in curb appeal and home resale value — so finding a landscaper who is worth the investment is important. When hiring a landscaper, look for proven success with the type of results you want. For example, if you know you want a drought-tolerant yard, research websites, reviews and portfolios that showcase beautiful drought-tolerant yards that the landscaper has installed. In addition to relevant experience, you’ll want to find a landscape contractor who has good client reviews. Good communication skills are another important quality in a landscape contractor, since everything from plant selection to hardscape installation needs to be discussed and agreed upon. A landscape contractor who is reliable, easy to understand and able to listen to what you want will help make the process seamless and enjoyable.

Hire skilled professionals for absolutely everything.
