I can't say enough good things about Jarrod! He stayed in excellent contact from start to finish, was professional in every way, and did a beautiful job installing my glass shower door enclosure. He very clearly knows his stuff and takes pride in his work - when he initially came to install my shower door kit, he was concerned about the safety of the suggest install procedure and identified a "random" piece in the boxes that he believed to be a necessary part of the install. After contacting the shower door company the next business day, sure enough, Jarrod was right on the money - the "random" piece was indeed very important and the company failed to send the correct install guide. Jarrod could have easily installed the kit the first visit despite his professional misgivings and I would have been none the wiser, but the fact that he took the extra time and visits to do the right thing speaks volumes to his integrity and the quality of his work. I would hire him again in a heartbeat!

The plumbers who did my shower repair (Ryan and Curtis) did an outstanding job. They arrived on time and first assessed the reason for the leaking faucet. They provided several options for the repair, including low and higher cost options. They did a great job on the repair. The shower works better than it did before the repair (e.g. better water pressure and the handle works better).

Jason was responsive to taking on the project with short notice. He showed up on time, professional and clean appearance. Performed the project of replacing a tub/shower faucet. He gave me a quote on thumbtack based on the thorough details I provided without physically seeing the project. It went exactly as expected and price was exactly as quoted. Very satisfied with the service and will use and refer regulators plumbing for future plumbing projects!

The roller wheels of our sliding patio door were worn out. We tried to replace those wheels ourselves but it was difficult to get them out. Serghei came on time. He helped us fix this problem less than one hour and asked for a reasonable price. We are happy with the result.

Jorge and his crew did a really nice job for a very reasonable price. They installed insulation, hung and taped drywall (with a smooth finish), painted the exterior and painted the interior of a garage-turned-studio / workshop. I am a bit of a 'perfectionist on a budget'... so probably the most annoying kind of customer to work with. And while I did have to make a few requests throughout the job that I thought were sort of obvious (like covering the garage doors in plastic because the black exterior paint was misting on them), they were always very accommodating and wanted me to be satisfied with the project. So just be very specific at the beginning about your expectations and tell Jorge if anything comes up that you're not satisfied with, and I'm sure you'll be pleased with the end result. One example... the floor was left with white drywall dust and mud splatters on the concrete (even though I had mentioned that it was our final flooring and not going to be covered up), and when I texted Jorge about it, his wife called me right away and they came over that evening to scrub it clean. They are really nice people to work with, and it's apparent that they care about their customers. I would work with them again on future projects.

Vs. other plumbers, Gil was straight and honest, instead of coming over and charging me on fixing a shower valve, on the phone, he sent me to home depot first to go replace the valve cartridge. which fixed my problem. I love it when an expert up front tries to truly help you and tells you what the problem might be, vs. try to trick you into fixing something bigger than what you needed. Gil, you have a new fan. Thanks, Z.

We initially hired Brandin for an electrical job but lucky for us, he was a an all-in-one home improvement general contractor. He was adaptable with our ever growing to-do list. We ended up asking him to do our trim in our laundry room, siliconing our shower, and now building a gate for us, and other random jobs! Very fair and honest pricing, professional, and recommended!

Cedo was great to work with and did an excellent job tiling floors, building / tiling a custom shower and adding old bricks masonry onto an interior wall. He is extremely professional and goes to great lengths to make sure the work is as perfect as possible given the construction site conditions. My remodel turned out to be challenging because of the walls not being straight and the brick wall being very time consuming, but he was very gracious about any unforeseen obstacles and worked extremely hard to get the project finished. He was a very valuable thought partner each step of the way, and I ended up extending the original scope to include installing a backsplash, doors and trim. The end result looks spectacular and i would hire him again in a heartbeat!

Chris was great from start to finish! We started having him paint our kitchen and dining room which turned out great. We found out he provided other services and hired him to install backsplash in our kitchen, as well as wood floors in our dining room. Everything looks great! He always kept us informed of progress, showed up when he said he would, and even gave suggestions on how we could save money in the process...who does that?! We are very greatful to have found him, and will definitely be hiring him again in the future!

I had Brian and Diamond Tile come out and tile our new shower stall. I had a short amount of time to complete the work (tenants moving in) and I appreciated that they could start working the day after the bid was given. There was a slight "hiccup" along the way, but Brian made sure everything was taken care of and I'm pleased with the final result.

Vlad and his crew did a great job on our downstairs bathroom. We were starting with studs and concrete floor and I didn't feel comfortable doing the shower drain & floor. Vlad listened to what we wanted, worked with us every step of the way including being flexible about buying materials and even saved us a ton by suggesting different places to buy things. For example our shower is doorless but has a big piece of glass that seperates it from the main bathroom area. This glass was showing up well over $1k but Vlad suggested looking on-line and we got an even thicker piece than we were originally looking at for a quarter of the that price. After all was said and done they built out the entire shower (pan, drain, tile, glass, fixtures, etc) and installed in-floor heat before tiling the main floor. It came out great and we are super happy. The ONLY hiccup in the whole thing was we have two tones of Schluter Stip around our tile (white and off-white) which was tough to see in the working light but now with lights installed is sorta noticable. But that is pretty minor....otherwise would have been 5 stars. Thanks Vlad!

We needed a fence gate, stair work and closet doors installed. When I removed the carpet, the stairs were a total nightmare! Jesse and crew did a BEAUTIFUL job rebuilding and staining our stairs. The fence gate is stylish, solid and built to last at least til the next century if not longer! We highly recommend Goodface and look forward to working with them on future projects (and there are many). We have great confidence in the skill and artistry of Jesse and his crew and very highly recommend them. Great work, friendly, professional people, outstanding price.

The installers of our heat pump did an excellent job. The unit was a "package" type heat pump, which is unusual for a residential application. The technicians were thorough and worked through the "hiccups" of dealing with this out-of-the-ordinary equipment. We were pleased with their work.

Q & A

Answers to commonly asked questions from the experts on Thumbtack.

Where should I start when remodeling a bathroom?

Bathroom remodeling doesn’t have to be overwhelming. Before starting a bathroom remodel it’s crucial to know what you want and have a clear understanding of your maximum budget. If you’d love all marble fixtures but have $3,000 total, you will have to compromise. Being realistic about materials and money before you even contact a contractor will have you on the road to success. Here are some simple steps to follow in the planning stages of bathroom remodeling:

  • List your remodeling priorities in order of importance (e.g., 1. New shower head, 2. Replace flooring, 3. Install recessed lighting, etc.).
  • Calculate what you can realistically afford to spend on your bathroom remodel. Identify an “all in” price — meaning the absolute maximum you’re willing to pay, as well as what you’d prefer to spend.
  • Gather ideas from Pinterest about colors and finishes.
  • Research the costs of the materials and finishes you want and begin making choices about what is and isn’t possible to fit into your budget (once labor is included). If you’d like to stay under $10,000 total, but really love a $2,000 tub, plan to downgrade in other areas.
  • Request quotes from at least three reputable general contractors, share your vision and ideal materials, and work together from there.

How do I plan a bathroom remodeling project?

If you’re stumped on how to plan a bathroom remodeling project, it pays to hire a designer. This is especially important if you’re changing your bathroom layout in any way. Designers create contractor-friendly drawings indicating exactly where each tile and fixture will be installed, down to the light switches. This investment might cost you $300-$500 but save you significant frustration and miscommunication, while ensuring you get precisely what you want.

If you’re going to do your own design, planning a bathroom remodeling project means being organized and planning ahead. Create a general outline of what you want and the budget you have. Identify the specific fixtures, tiles, paint and vanity you prefer. Get all this organized before requesting quotes from two to three reputable general contractors. Once you find the right pro, get a written contract outlining scope of work, materials that will be used, timeframe and payment schedule. Communicate clearly about when to order your materials so they are ready and waiting by the time the contractor gets the permits. Your job from here is to communicate clearly, pay the contractor as the work progresses, and enjoy your remodel when it’s done.

How long should a bathroom remodel take?

With proper planning and a good general contractor, your bathroom remodeling project doesn’t have to take forever. The construction phase of the project will always vary based on your scope of work, the square footage and the condition of your bathroom under the surface layer. Inevitably an 80-square-foot master bathroom with major changes will take longer than a 25-square-foot guest bath undergoing a minor renovation. For a smaller bathroom, a facelift — the industry term for sprucing up the surface layer (such as paint, vanity, tiles or light fixtures) but keeping the existing footprint of the space — may take five to eight working days, as long as there are no surprises like mold waiting when the old vanity comes out. A more complex bathroom remodel that revamps the shower area (customizing the plumbing, installing tile and changing the shower door), updates the flooring and cabinetry, and adds new paint and new lighting could take anywhere from one week to three weeks. A full bathroom remodel that guts the room, changing the footprint and moving the electrical wiring and plumbing lines, could take four to eight weeks or more. To keep your bathroom remodel on schedule, have your materials ordered and waiting, and don’t make any change orders once construction begins. Planning is key to keeping a bathroom remodel on schedule.

How much does it cost to remodel a bathroom?

Nationally, the average cost of bathroom remodeling is $14,000. Bathroom remodels can vary widely, from standard makeovers to luxurious master bathroom revamps. The factors that affect your bathroom remodeling cost are the finishes you choose (marble tiles can cost 20 times as much as standard subway tiles), the square footage of the project, regional labor rates in your area and the scope of work. Changing the layout or size of the bathroom will also raise costs. Moving electrical wiring and plumbing lines will also dramatically increase costs, as you’ll need to hire plumbers and electricians to handle the work. What’s happening behind your walls and under your floor will also affect bathroom remodeling cost: Rot, damage or mold can lead to additional work and charges. Overall, bathroom remodeling may offer great return on investment and also improve your daily life. Here are some examples of average bathroom remodeling costs:

  • 6-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $3,500, including labor and materials.
  • Standard renovation: $6,500-$10,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased. Labor may include taking out the shower and shower pan, installing new shower pan and shower, and installing new door, new vanity, new mirror, new bathroom fan, and all new fixtures.
    • Price variation depends on the quality of the finishes.
  • 10-foot by 6-foot bathroom remodel: $7,200, including labor and materials.
  • Mid-range renovation: $12,000-$15,000. Price includes labor and materials the customer has purchased.
  • Upscale renovation: $35,000 and up. Price includes labor and materials. Items might include digital displays for fixtures, multiple shower heads and custom showers.

Who remodels bathrooms?

The professional best equipped to handle bathroom remodeling is a general contractor. A general contractor is typically licensed by the state or region in which they work to carry out home remodeling projects. To receive licensing, they must generally demonstrate their knowledge of construction and building and safety codes. General contractors act as the organizer for the entire bathroom remodeling project, ensuring that each element (new tile, shower pan replacement, lighting installation, etc.) is completed at the appropriate time by the proper contractor. Before hiring a general contractor, it’s wise to do your research. In addition to getting several competitive bids, here are questions to ask:

  • May I see before-and-after photos of some of your recent bathroom remodels?
  • Will I need permits for this project? Do you apply for those?
  • May I see proof of insurance and licenses?
  • Can we have a written contract outlining scope of work, budget and timeline?
  • Will you be here each day overseeing the work?
